My school's 'Basic Illustration' class actually used your "Imaginative Realism" book as our main reading material. Great content and helpful advice Mr. Gurney! Also, it was very surprising to learn that, you the author, made the Dinotopia series. I loved watching that mini series as a kid, so much that it sparked a dinosaur-obsession phase. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the past and current inspiration!

This is EXACTLY the book my childhood self would have begged for my birthday. I can't tell you how much time I spent mentally wandering the streets of Waterfall City. I've already ordered my copy, as a present to a younger me :-)

I think every artist has that moment in their creative life when you're presented with something that absolutely challenges ones idea of art. That moment for me was in 1994 when my art teacher in high school showed me a Dinotopia book; it was absolutely break taking and inspired to this day, i sincerely wanted to live in that work. It shocked me with surprise to discover many years later that like myself, you were once a matte painter. Sadly matte painting has lost the charm it once had from all the old classic painters like yourself that once inspired me. It's great to see someone still using these traditional techniques. I definitely love the idea of building miniatures and maquettes and wish my day job would allow the time to take this approach. Thanks for the continued amazingly inspiring work :)

Mr Gurney, you are an unbelievable talented artist and I am so ashamed that I've just found your work now in 2020. I really hope that all your books sell extremely well and you make a amazing life out of your art (I bet that this is probably already happening). This is insane, you're a genius!!

You know, I would love to see you do a collaboration with Studio Ghibli. I think they're the only studio that would do Dinotopia justice bringing it to the screen. Your world of Dinosaurs and humans living together is so vivid, I've wanted to move there since I was a kid.

Upon watching this video, I was surprised to see your name on that book - *by James Gurney*. "...!! What are the chances?! I've been watching the videos of the creator of Dinotopia that I loved so much as a kid?! No... It can't be..." I called master Google, requested the name of the author of the original books. Surprise, surprise! James Gurney. "Mr. Jaw, meets Ms. Floor. Ms. Floor, meet Mr. Jaw."

I am, and always will be, a massive fan of these books and the stories they tell. I always enjoy reading them, and, once I finish reading Jurassic Park, I will be going through the entire series again. Do you have any plans to make another book in the series?

How large are the paintings on an average? That can influence the amount of time it takes doesn't it? You're one of my favorite artists because of your Dinotopia paintings.
@PHeMoX

Yeah, size of a painting has an exponential effect on the time it takes to finish assuming the same level of details is added.

Surprised to learn that your books were oil paintings, James. I paint in oil, but have trouble with turps as it gives me headaches, even the odourless. I use linseed oil, which I like, but it is hard to get a thin wash, that successive layers can grip. Can you recommend a better alternative? What brushes do you use, and how large are your pictures?
@JamesGurney
@JamesGurney 4 года назад
Max, those mineral spirits give me headaches now, too, so I mostly stay away from it, and that's one of the reasons I like gouache and watercolor so much. My recent plein air paintings are 5 x 8 inches. Dinotopia paintings are typically about 12 x 18, sometimes as big as 2 feet by 4 feet. Brushes are usually recommended under the video description.
@Max-dd7du
@Max-dd7du 4 года назад
Thanks for your reply, James, I guess all of those spirits would give headaches. Perhaps I need to focus on gouache. My brushes would last longer too. I will take note of your brush descriptions. Stay well!

Master, nice to meet you! I recently bought your two books, and I love them!!!!! I have a question and I hope you can read it and reply to me hahaha, about the use of maquettes, is it the same way use real maquettes and 3d models? can I get the same results? And about color, If I want to do the exercises using photoshop, some exemple, the Josef Albers's Exercises, Can I get the same results on study using photoshop to make the color cards and using real color cards? Thanks Master!

Lucas, it's hard for me to answer your question about comparing digital vs. analog tools because I don't have enough experience with the digital tools. Whether one is faster or more efficient or more effective for you is something you'll just have to decide for yourself by trying them both.

One thing (among about a billion other things) that I like about your method of using maquettes, is that your paintings do not end up looking like 3D renders. I see so many people using 3D models today (esp. in comics) and it looks just awful.
