Illustrator James Gurney demonstrates how he researched and painted two dinosaur illustrations for Scientific American Magazine's May, 2015 feature called "Rise of the Tyrannosaurs."
The article was written by Stephen Brusatte, one of the paleontologists who discovered the long-snouted Qianzhousaurus, nicknamed "Pinocchio Rex," and its bizarre lesser-known cousins. Over 20 new kinds of tyrannosaurs have been discovered in the last 15 years. In some cases there were large and small tyrannosaur predators sharing the same environment.
Also included in this video is a scene of a large type of tyrannosaur, the Yutyrannus, threatening to steal a kill from a group of Dilong. Gurneyy documents every stage of the process. This video is the short version of the full 40-minute video, which is now available as a download.
