Outside Playing is used in Jazz and Fusion and can be established even with the simple blue note in the Pentatonic scale. In this e-book we going to look at a wide variety of scales and arpeggios like the Dorian mode, the hybrid fusion sale, the half diminished arpeggio or m7b5 arpeggio over minor and major chords. After this we look at chaining arpeggios and sidestepping, also known as side-stepping and sideslipping. Als the Dorian #4 is a good scale to use in this perspective, just like the altered scale, whole tone scale, melodic minor scale and diminished scale and diminished arpeggio.

Just FYI: Fusion doesn't mean to "play outside", playing "outside" does. Fusion is where two or more disparate styles (whether related or not) of music are joined together into a new "fused' sound, style, or even genre. In the case of DiMeola and that ilk, they just kept the name "fusion" which was short for Jazz-Rock fusion. Whereas Ingwe and that ilk took on the name "neoclassical".

Holy cow... I've been playing for 45 years with pro experience - this is elegant. So concisely presented without missing any information and it simplifies and enlightens. These are patterns and concepts even advanced players spend months learning. I sent this to one of my buddies who has a degree in classical music and it even taught him a few things. Simply excellent. Thank you.

Great advice for any player of any level. I love the way that Victor Wooten talks about notes in his book, The Music Lesson. He says each note is like it’s own little world, a la Horton Hears a Who. Focusing on letting each note live and breathe in the way that best serves the music is a cool way to think about playing. Thanks for the reminder, friend.

Trey Anastasio from Phish is the most innovative and overall best outside player Ivve ever heard. He can take minutes to resolve a phrase (largely due to the genius level support of the keyboardist), and when he does, the effect is greatly exxaggerated and causes an extreme catharthist in the listener. Listen to Chaldust Torture solo from New Years 1995 for a great example.

All these techniques of superimposing and playing outside can be placed in one of two categories: (A) _altering_ the existing backing harmony, in effect creating chromatic alterations of perceived scale degrees in the harmonic context, but retaining the prevailing tonal center, or (B) superimposing a completely _different_ separate, competing harmonic context, so that the listener's ear begins to try and re-identify the whole picture, including the tonal center. Alternative A is easier because the soloist just has to add something to the soup and can rely on the unmodified backing harmony (and rhythm) to be there as a structure and safety net to lean on. But in alternative B, the soloist has to be able to play lines that are so strong and clear that the listener is convinced of the new competing harmonic context. It's like a soloist's harmonic takeover of the listener's perception. The lines have to be clear, they have to draw the picture of a different tonal center very strongly, and the notes have to be played with conviction, precisely articulated, in good rhythm. Even if you play all the right notes, if you play them with unclear timing or articulation, it just sounds like a mistake. This is what I've concluded after spending time trying to find out what works and what doesn't work when trying to play outside. I think the same applies to rhythmic superimposition as well. Many tutorials seem to emphasize the "what notes you should play" aspect, and don't emphasize enough the importance of good technique and phrasing. It's easy to go with the flow and agree with a backing track even with bad technique and phrasing... but to _disagree_ requires a clear idea, power and conviction. :) Even a dead fish can swim downstream with the flow. But to swim upstream it has to be a live one. ;)
