What a coincidence that this is coming out on the same day as Geoff's video at Richmond, probably the first ever mention of BART on his channel. Do check that one out too!

I like this video because of all the details, not just about the stations but the architecture and artwork that surrounds them. I'm from the Bay Area and I've been on BART a lot but even I learned a lot from that

0:47 "Although Richmond is a terminal station for BART, most connecting regional bus services instead run to El Cerrito del Norte station, which is much closer to I-80."
@TohaBgood2
@TohaBgood2 11 месяцев назад
The highway proximity is one reason, but there's also a more sinister one. El Cerrito was always a pretty safe city, while Richmond has historically had some of the worst gang violence. (Google "Richmond Iron Triangle") It's become a looooooooooot safer in the last 20 years. But it was a very dangerous area in the past. Hence, instead of dealing with the crime issue, they just put all the transit at the El Cerrito station. Similarly, when there were plans to expand BART to Hercules the El Cerrito city council blocked any extension that did not bypass Richmond and go directly from El Cerrito Del Norte to Hercules. This was specifically done to avoid Richmond and its still simmering gang violence problem. These days most of the crime was sort of gentrified away to Antioch and Stockton. But even 10 years ago everyone still remembered how "dangerous" Richmond was.

the fare gates at richmond and rockridge were pilots to stop fare evasion, both of those designs have been scrapped and all stations will have a fully protected fare gate design which you can see on the board presentation linked on BART's new fare gate project article
@Mike__B
@Mike__B 10 месяцев назад
Yup, the double decker cheese wedge design just looks wrong, also wonder how effective it actually as it seems like someone could just sneak through the middle section. 6 foot+ tall glass doors should be much better both aesthetically looking and functionality, although I do worry how long they'll last before someone sees them as a graffiti canvas, or forcibly pries them open, or uses those glass breaking tools that they use to break into cars on them... any way you slice it the old gates are perfectly fine but because of certain people puts them into the "this is why we can't have nice things anymore" category.
@ActuallySanFrancisco
@ActuallySanFrancisco 8 месяцев назад
@@Mike__B i'd blame BART's own mismanagement in certain areas, particularly this one, over the past several years, as opposed to predominantly poor riders who feel inclined to jump the gates. literally every single cost benefit analysis on fare enforcement techniques ever done everywhere has shown that fare enforcement is a 100% waste of time and a massive expense that always costs significantly more than the fares lost. the US is literally the only country on the planet that bothers with fare enforcement techniques, cause we're apparently the only one dumb enough to think it actually matters. it doesn't. people who are going to pay the fare will no matter what. people who can't or won't will just go out of their way to continue to not pay it, or just simply won't ride the train. all fare enforcement does is waste money on shitty fare enforcement officer jobs and over-engineered and expensive station apparatuses like these new fare gates. it accomplishes literally nothing else other than bleeding money into theatrics that have never once shown to increase revenue on any transit system anywhere in the world. i love BART but the people making the decisions in this specific area are being, to be frank, completely stupid.

I was just there in August. Went from SFO to Embarcadero before taking Muni everywhere. One thing I love to do but no RU-vidrs do, is to get out of the station & walk around to show what is accessible from the station. Maybe not as exciting but much more important for livability as we don’t live at the station but rather the areas around the station. Please consider that for future videos.

I've lived around or near the South Hayward Station for almost whole life. It's definitely my home station. And I never realized how unique its pedestrian bridge is. Ty for making me appreciate my home even more!
@ac3115
@ac3115 9 месяцев назад
That bridge at South Hayward is accessible by elevators only, and it’s the only step-free way to get to the platforms. Most riders just use the stairs to go down and up. Another fun fact is, after entering the station, riders using the elevator will now go outdoors “inside the paid area” (which is fenced from the free area) to reach the platforms. This is to avoid fare evasion. There is also a similar bridge at Daly City, but by stairs only.

The number one secret: Locals will know you're not from around here if you call it "the" BART. It's just BART.
@TohaBgood2
@TohaBgood2 3 месяца назад
I immediately knew that this guy was not from the Bay. All the transplants/newcomers spend their first few years in the Bay being utterly confused about BART not being a subway, but looking like one. But "the BART" was the final confirmation that he's not from around here.
@unoriginalname3442
@unoriginalname3442 2 месяца назад
Why? It stands for “Bay Area rapid transit”; what makes more sense: “Oh yeah that’s the Bay Area rapid transit” or”oh yeah that’s Bay Area rapid transit”? Also why are people who are tourists not wanting to be seen as tourists? You’re a tourist; no shit.
@TohaBgood2
@TohaBgood2 Месяц назад
@@unoriginalname3442 No one cares what the acronym stands for. We've always called it BART, just BART, as if it's the first name of an old friend. It's the local slang that developed over the years. And as local slang usually is, it's almost deliberately confusing to non-locals and allows us to immediately determine if you're a local committed to this place or just a tourist passing through. It might sound harsh, but if you're just passing through here, if you're here for a job for a couple of years, or if you're just here for college then we generally don't care what you think about local matters. Your opinion will leave with you when you leave.

Additional note about Colma station.. Originally BART terminated at Daily City until 1996 when Colma station opened and thus Daily City station also has 3 platforms. This creates a rare situation where there are 3 tracks between the stations, a rare sight on the network. After the SFO extension in 2003 and other service changes in following years, green and blue line trains again terminate at Daily City thus creating the unused platform at Colma as mentioned.
@ZorenManray
@ZorenManray 10 месяцев назад
Oh and another fact not mentioned: Just south of Colma station BART goes back underground to pass underneath some of the largest graveyards on the SF peninsula. This made the project quite expensive and slow to build as proper caution had to be taken during construction.
