Brazil's REAL-ly Cool Banknotes. A look at the new 200 Brazilian Real banknote, as well as the rest of the series, the animals on them and their security features. Instagram: @halfasleepchris Merch: halfasleepchri...
In the “old family” of Real, we had the 1 Real note, featuring a hummingbird. But these notes are replaced for the 1 Real coins in 2005. Now they’re a super rare collector’s item.
Hi Chris, i'm from Brazil and the animals on the notes were chosen because they suffer from extinction risk. That's why Central Bank doesn't put the Caramel dog on it, unfortunately! hahaha
Interesting fact: the Jaguar in the 50 reais note is not just a representative picture, but it actually exists, her name is Gabi and she lives in Rio de Janeiro's Zoo.

I am a simple Brazilian, I see something about my country and I like it. Actually I love the fact that the Brazilian Real is represented by native animals, better than putting politicians.
E eu fui a pé pra rua.kkkk😂😂😂
I Find it funny how brazilians are such a big part of the internet, and we hide in our own youtube ecosystem, but then some english channel puts "Brazil" In the title... Welp here we are, thanks for calling us, your faith will now be to come to Brasil :gun:

fun fact: , when Real was lauched in 1994, face values of the notes reflect the rarity of the species: 1 real (humming bird, very common elsewhere), 5 reais (heron), 10 reais (macaw), 50 reais (Pantanal's Jaguar), 100 reais (manatee and garoupa, at risk of extinction). Later they launched 2 reais (seaturtle) and 20 reais (lion-tamarin) and break the pattern.
@@MarcosSabinoCreator eu nao disse "pedindo" no sentido literal.

Behind the fish (a garoupa) on the 100 note, there is also a coral, named Muricea flamma. Endemic to Brazil when the note was released, later found also in Bahamas. The coral is also pictured at the holographic band. In 2018, dozens of people wore costumes inspired on this species in one of the sectors of a carnival parade in honor of the National Museum.
I don’t think it’s actually because of it, but I remember asking Chris to make a episode about the reais notes because of the 200 real note, i didn’t really thought he would do it, but the madlad did it anyways.
As a brazilian, I really disliked when people didn't want the maned wolf. It's an endangered species. I saw someone say "why would I want a maned wolf? I never see one" yeah that's exactly why we should put it there. They are ellusive animals and brazilian people are not very aware of their situation. Everyone loves caramel dog, but come on.
A few curiosities: 1 - up until 2005, we had the 1 real note, it was green and featured a hummingbird, nowadays we only have the 1 real coin to represent this value, which is the biggest coin, and also the most beautiful bc it has a golden outer ring 2 - many Brazilians complain about the fact that both the 2 reais note and the 100 reais note are blue, it's pretty common for people to mistake the two in day to day life, which may cause people to lose a 100 reais note, some people even advocate for changing the 2 reais note color to green now that the 1 real note is out of circulation 3 - in 2000, to celebrate the 500 years of the country, we had a special print of the 10 reais note, it was made out of plastic and featured a completely different design, older looking, with a more classic font, the face of Pedro Alvares Cabral (the first sailor to find Brazil) instead of the face of the Republic, and a big red dot on one of the sides, I was born in 1999 and saw this note everywhere until my late childhood, even though they were only a special print 4 - Despite Brazil being a laic State (in theory), all notes are printed with the phrase "Deus seja louvado" (God be praised) on them, this caused a nation wide hoax in 2013, when a satirical news website posted that someone changed "Deus" for "Goku" on an entire printing of 100 reais notes, and lots of people didn't realize it was a joke and believed it 5 - the Real has only been around since 1994, we had multiple other currencies prior to it
When they announced that the maned wolf would be the chosen animal, counterfeiters created a 200 note of their own design and it was in circulation before the real deal was released. The thing is: the fake note was MUCH prettier than the actual one. There were a lot of memes on the internet about how ugly the real design was, given how beautiful the wolf is and how good the counterfeit's design was. It's an unnecessary and ugly note.
here in brazil it was said that the note was created to facilitate the financial assistance the government gave for people with money issues on the pandemic. but since then, i never heard anything about it, no complains, nor compliments, the thing that we meme about, is that the actual wolf is sUUper beautiful, and the one on the note is TERRYFINGLY UGLY
@@irmaosmatos4026 the fish itself is not a beautiful thing, at least it's well represented. The wolf on the other hand I cant event tell whether the furr was bad drawed or the animal was caught on fire
As a brazilian myself I can confirm that the vira-lata caramelo, or caramel mongol as you said is universally loved here, and we made thousands of petitions and on-line protests about it not being in the 200 reais bill.
The problem with the 200 note is that it's hard to exchange for smaller notes. When I got it in my hands, people are always annoyed at how big it is, and we always have a conversation along the lines of "why did they release such a big value note, if exchanging a 50 is already hard enough"
@@josiasroig8622 exactly! it's such a nightmare. I`ve seen a guy buy a single 2 liters bottle of Conquista guarana with a 200, at a liquor store, while I was waiting in the line behind him. there's nothing the cashier can do or say but the look on their faces says it all, it's a massive pain in the ass

I’m Brazilian and just knew some of the the security mechanisms in the bill. Great work portraying them all. I don’t know if it’s universal with other countries bills but there’s a marker pen that paints different colors on a real bill and a fake bill. Most cashiers use it when receiving the large bills (50 or higher).
The reverse of the $2 note is actually quite nice and interesting :-) I wish that all of our notes depicted either an events or an idea of United States. Like Liberty, equality, the pursuit of happiness, etc.
