Primogeniture was one of the reasons the aristocracy were able to counter the power of the monarch. In several areas in India the constant division of property equally resulted in poverty. You need a critical mass of capital to sustain growth of said capital.
I've read or heard that at least part of the reason England didn't have a revolution similar to the one in France is that there was a religious revival going on (the Methodist denomination began during this time) and there was liberalization of some of the laws in England. I'm sure there were many reasons but this one sounds like a valid one among multiple reasons. Maybe someone else can add to this.
We did have one in the 1600 ‘s with Oliver Cromwell and the Roundheads against the cavaliers and the monarchy . Cromwell reigned for 12 years eventually Charles the second came into power only after Cromwell’s government chopped Charles the first’s head off !!
I think the World Wars also contributed to this. Not only were people tired of the fighting, having lost so many lives, but it gave them a common enemy to unite against that was not English!
A lot of drudgery & little pay for the staff yet I also admire the complexity & effectiveness of how the English manor house functioned. The housekeepers & butlers are similar to today's executives running multi-department organizations &I respect and admire those people who worked so hard & for so long doing the scrubbing & washing, the hauling & carrying, emptying chamber pots & doing other unappealing, unglamorous chores. People still do those tasks & deserve respect & decent wages.

Fascinating look into the recent past, which was a world that existed for over a millennia. I can more easily understand why some of my ancestors were rebels against the English.
this "documentary" ignores that some landowners entailed their land to keep their heirs from selling it off. The heirs became land poor because they were also responsible for paying their mothers' jointures and settlements on their sisters, as well as annuities to retired servants. Losing face if they engaged in trade, they had to mortgage land or marry rich girls who might be descended from slaves, conquered peoples in Asia, or from City families whom they would not admit to their homes. When wasteful gambling and other excesses made it impossible to renew mortgages, the estate went under the hammer to the rich people excluded from them socially.

Wow, it would seem the shift that took place served to end these classes and consolidate power into the new Banking moguls. Moves well done to be sure the mannor lords seem to dwindle to but a few. masterfully played.
The British Monarchy was deprived of much of its power by the house of commons... they also had a much more benevolent upper class than the rest of the world... their power was eventually dwarfed by the leaders of the industrial age... corporations and politics eventually offered a way out... the Scots led the way for the entire British Empire with democratic principles which eventually swept the entire nation... the former colonies became industrial giants themselves.
I'm trying to understand, & maybe it's not possible, to what extent WWI was a deliberate way of creating change within Britain. An extraordinary number of men, both upper and lower class, were sacrificed (yes, I use the word advisedly) & it surely wasn't the only possible way of addressing the problems among the nations of Europe. I don't want to get involved in a shouting match about conspiracy. I don't think we'll ever know the degree of deliberation with certainty, but we can consider this.

The lack of interest to the lot of their minions brought the aristocracy down, not just the changing economics. They had a lack of interest in anything not directly related to their own welfare and petty interests, with some exceptions of course. Much like King Donald the First today, they thought they knew it all and need not know the realities of the world, thinking they would be able to wing everything because of their status, wealth and knowledge of etiquette. And they could, within their peer group, but outside of their peer group, they would be lost hopelessly. That attracts the attention of media but the principle cause is lack of feeling of responsibility and, from that, a lack of interest.This is almost opposite of what we have been taught to believe, viz. that they would be very responsible people. Well, there were some, but the vast majority was irresponsible, why, to whom would they have to feel responsible to? There was no-one to check them. Just like there was no-one to check Trump. Things become predictable.

One of the reasons there isn't enough land in Britain for housing is because of the blood sucking socialist thieves in political power. They demand such high punitive taxes on selling large landed estates in Scotland, for example, that those lands are just left as hunting estates. Socialist thieves can only blame themselves.
I imagine that this is what the Kennedy family wants - a line of aristocratic primogeniture. Had John F. Kennedy, Jr. lived, he probably would have been pushed to be Senator Kennedy today, replacing his late uncle, Ted. He and his wife would've been glamorous and touted as "heirs" to JFK and Jackie. But because Jr. died, they made sure the next "heir", Caroline, was pushed forward as the next possible Senator to replace Teddy. Dreams of aristocracy happen in the U.S. amongst our political elite!
At 5:00 there's a brief shot of laborers working in a field; it's certainly 20th c., in smocks with belts, leggings, and flat round hats. Did farm workers commonly wear such costumes at that late period? They look very similar to men in Medieval paintings, or are they women? "This was a period of imperial certainty. It looked as though The Empire would last forever, rather like the American empire today" ...uh, did that guy not get the memo...?
In the final analysis, all this is kept together by a state monopoly on violence and a cultural acquiescence of differences. These two factors caused the resignation of people with their fate. Of course, the elites did everything to prevent the resignation from disappearing. Lack of education was a prime tool, preventing people to vote another. And the third was the imposition of 'English' culture, i.e. the belief in the class system and all that, on pupils at schools. Part of that imposition was to teach the underprivileged that the elites were best suited to govern them, even help them, although 99% of them never did. These tricks are still being used today. Just listen to JRM and BoJo who don't belong to the landed gentry even but must be thought to be part of the ruling elites.
