We agree, the paper really does play an especially important role in this technique. Wet-in-wet really works best on good quality, 100% rag watercolor paper- the sizing and strong paper fibers let the paint travel gradually in at least somewhat predictable ways, to a beautiful surface. Thanks for de-mystifying this under-used technique!

Hi Emily! Just want to let you know that this video is just so helpful! I think the first time I’ve done wet-on-wet properly on a painting was after watching one of your older videos, but this one knocks it out of the park by breaking down the principles. Very cool! 😸

I recently learned a nifty tip from Mind of Watercolor whose name I am sorry to say I don't know. Oik. Anyway, he said that when you have too much water on your brush, but don't want to lose any pigment, blot the brush on to paper towel or rag, but ONLY at the ferrule.

I love the fact that you say good watercolor paper matters for the final outcome. I had this discussion before with my instructor who can paint anything on any kind of paper and she disagreed with me. When she used good paper, she got better outcomes. When I used anything other than Arches, my paintings suffered. Use good paper people!!

Emily, this video is a shining example of why I am a subscriber. Your teaching technique, excellent camera work and information are all top notch. Showing examples of errors were especially helpful, and explaining why it happened. My tendency is to use too much water, b/c when I first started I was watching a British painter, Alwyn Crawshaw, on our local PBS station. He felt that beginners were too timid with water, and always ended the program stating, "Remember, bags of water!". 🤣
@EmilyOlsonArt

Wow, thank you! What a kind comment! I don't think "bags of water" is wrong! Just wrong for this technique. 🤣

4:36 is *exactly* what I got every I tried your black cat tutorial. I thought it was a paper wetness issue and never figured it out. I will have to try that again now that I know it was the brush wetness. Also, I think think the tinted water mistake could be a nice intentional effect. Even in the example it kind of frames the cat. I could see that working with the right color and shape. And thanks for showing several different issues side-by-side. That really helps me understand how something works, especially when there are multiple factors interacting.

Thank you so much for the pet colors download it is soo very helpful. Especially for the example and teaching about color mixing. I have only one question, do you ever use white, as my SylviQ is mostly white. She is a Maltese❤️💝
@EmilyOlsonArt
@EmilyOlsonArt Год назад
I almost never use white paint, except for small details at the end like whiskers--I try to preserve the white of the paper for my whites. It's a backwards way of thinking if you're used to working with opaque media, but get's easier with practice.

Synthetic Ox Gall can help a lot too, especially on a cery dry day or day with the AC blasting. Be warned though that the Synthetic Ox Gall can make the paint lift a little, even if it's 100% dry, but that isn't really a problem if you incorporate this into the process. I didn't realize the paper texture would make such a big difference. I would have figured hot press would allow paint to flow better because there isn't texture to slow down the water absorption and pugment movement, but I alost exclusively work with hot press and paint tightly, so I just don't have the milage to have known. Thanks for this info! I worried I was just a failure lmao!

Hello Emily, thanks for this excellent video. Just a question ¿which pigments do you recommend, additionally to Moonglow? Spreading is not the same for all the pigments
@EmilyOlsonArt
@EmilyOlsonArt Год назад
Paint flow is a great thing to test when you do your test swatches. You are right, some pigments flow slowly with more resistance, and others react effortlessly. You can't go wrong with most professional brands of paints. Daniel Smith is my favorite!
