The booth berry has spoken!!!! Seriously though you guys are the best. Documenting and discussing this process made what would have been a a long day even longer. Thank you for putting in the time and energy to show the details, share the experience and explain those little details. So many times people who have years of experience don’t remember what’s it’s like to be a beginner. I don’t know how you stayed connected to it but this is no doubt the most comprehensive paint video on RU-vid. Just awesome 🙌🏼

Wow! What a lot of information. I haven't painted a car in almost 30 years. What has gone on in those years is mind blowing. I have watched this twice, trying to get my head around all the new paints, polyester, urethane, water born, primer surfaces/sealers---- Thank you for taking the time to post. I doubt if I will have a chance to use this information but I can still dream. Working on my pickup that has come to it's peak--- I can peak through the rockers, I can peak through the cab corners--- You get it. I live in the rust belt. Besides the quality of the content, the humbleness and humility to say that this is where you are after 25+years of making some mistakes before honing your process down to a T, is everything! John, That is PPG Vibrance Collection, 2050 DTM, High Build and Epoxy Based that can be sanded. The first time I saw it on Sylvester's Customs, my first thought was this stuff does everything and must cost at least $25 a quart, right? Very good explanation and the perfect tutorial into waterborne paint products. I am just joking about the $25 a quart, with stuff this good from PPG it has to be at least $32.50 per quart? DK, Omaha.

I've always used sealer on a total respray but normally not on a panel spray. I would definitely use a sealer on an all over restoration spray. Just the way I was taught decades ago but I've seen guys do things I wouldn't dream of and get great looking results. Very good explaining and take the time to talk about details so even a beginner can understand. I have been painter for 20 + years and agree to all you said. The only thing i can bring to the table is that do not use wooden stick for mixing, especially paint. The wood can absorb some pigments wich maybe not so important on a full respray but when you make a repair it will make better colourmatch. I always use plastic sticks.
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS Год назад
Ahhhh great tip I would have never thought of that!! Thank you very much!
@chrisjackson9102
@chrisjackson9102 Год назад
I can second this; not for paint though same logic applies. For structural adhesives, anything 2-part. The wood can absorb one product more than the other, throwing off your mix ratios. We only use stainless mixing sticks now.

Great info! The EHP is actually cheaper per ounce than DBC but due to the reduction difference it comes out about the same. I like EHP because it lays flatter with better color control. Me and my partner sprayed different panels on a silver car. He sprays with SATA, I spray with Iwata. When the car was assembled, there was no mismatch at all. Downside is humidity is a killer with EHP. I wish PPG would develop a faster reducer. All paint companies bragged on water initially. Then I found out the test market was Southwest with dry heat/no humidity. I still bounce between water and solvent depending on the job. I use degreaser to wetsand any imperfections with EHP dragging the paper in one direction to avoid tearing the color. I'll only use an orientation coat if necessary, usually on lighter metallics or pearls. Not all the time but I tighten up the material about a turn with 12 -15 psi for that coat and only once instead of three. Contrary to PPG, orientation coats do not alter the color like they claim. I've been using the 5700 for quite a while. Great gloss retention and buffs great. Good for leveling painted graphics too. I slow it down as much as possible. Usually the 95 activator and reducer. Flow coating is a waste of time and material. With this 5700, 4-5 coats is plenty to flat sand and buff and still bury tape lines. I notice you don't use any Venturi driers. Do you have any certain set up in your booth for extra air flow? I was at a training facility and they had ceiling fans mounted to the upper plenum. Huge difference. I have a 3M full face mask. It's not air supplied but covers the whole face and takes the regular filters the half face does. Also,check into the spray socks to cover the head.
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS Год назад
Wow all amazing info thanks so much for sharing I’ll look into all of that. Nothing special in our old booth I just take the time to let it all fully dry. Takes me a looooong time lol
@class5bodyworks
@class5bodyworks Год назад
@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS I was messing around with inventing a heated hand held Venturi drier(patent pending) to battle the summer humidity. We used to fire the burner in the booth in summer to dry the intake air before it to the booth. Made a huge difference. The quads are just a wind tunnel blowing dirt around. Wouldn't recommend. Ceiling fans and heat is where it's at.

Bro, I always said the same thing about guns being a preference thing. I was strictly Sata or Iwata, BUT… If you try a Walcom or a new ANI, you’ll throw that Iwata away. I’m dead serious! I was blown away… Hell, I have about 7 ANI guns, I’ll send you one to try out! 👍

A tip for you' since everyone is mostly using hvlp/lvlp guns these days spraying metalic colors instead of agitator cup guns or a couple of marbles in the cup to keep the metallics mixed like we use to do it back in the days' you can use a pickled hogs knuckle bone' wash it off with reducer and drop it in the cup' will help keep the metallics from separating.

This video is great, I’m in the middle of a transporter project, engine swap mods done, I’ve done 2coats of 2k epoxy, just getting ready to fill then 2k high build primer … been unsure on what grade sandpaper to use prior to base coat, da sand or block , wet or dry? Definitely appreciate the work the professionals do more now, so much more involved than I thought, lwb transporter van is my first project definitely learned a lot

I block sand wet with water in 600 grit but you can use a DA the finish won’t come out as clean tho

A lot went into this video. It was great! There's not a lot of videos about what to do when you run into a problem like fish eyes. Also if you are painting at home maybe you can show viewers a cheap way to filter exhaust to keep neighbors from dialing epa. Im looking forward to your upcoming vids. Thanks for all the hard work to share!

I think one of the things you can do is paint when it is colder outside and the neighbors don't have the their windows open..or their laundry out.

I always find your videos informative and professional, thanks. I am about to start some projects with my boys (as I retire) and have not painted a car or a motorcycle for over 20-years and technology has moved on (HA - I can remember spraying nitrocellulose paint) and I appreciate your videos to get me 'up to speed'. And - crash repair methods can certainly be different than restoration type work. One needs to get the vehicle back out and shiny 'yesterday' - the other more focuses on the long term 'viability' of the work, and not satisfying the tight 'budget' of an insurance company. QUESTION - is 2050 an epoxy? I have yet to see PPG describe it as such in their literature. And because it can be sanded (unlike many others), will it have the same protection against moisture that the non-sandable epoxies seem to have? Once again - thanks for the detailed and professional 'lectures' on the correct and modern way of applying these materials. Try some knee pads - I often notice you on your knees on the concrete - it may catch up with you one day - better to be safe than sorry. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS Год назад
Thank you. I absolutely need knee pads I feel it! As for the vp2050 you are correct they don’t put it in their tech sheets but my ppg rep and many others call it an epoxy. It has amazing protection from moisture.

OP I'd like to see a video, of how you repainted a car to make it look like the OEM factory paint job. I.e. how you do a repaint, that doesn't look like a re-paint! i think you could make a fortune, training young people on how to paint cars - somebody needs to teach em!
