Andrew Beyer gets a lot of grief about his speed ratings, but used in the proper context I've found them amazingly consistent. Most people ask why the fastest horse doesn't win in every race, but there are so many other factors to include it should be remembered that this is just a starting point. Speed ratings are a tremendous achievement in their own right and he deserves all the kudos for that he gets. Not many people have accomplished so much as did A. Beyer with speed figures being synonymous with his name. Time passes, so does money, this in my mind is a much greater and lasting achievement.

All you who slam Andy, please remember . He invented his figures for HIMSELF back in the 70s, to help him become a winning gambler. Which they did. That they're in use today publicly is a result of the Daily Racing Form wanting them, it wasn't Andy's idea. And just applying them blindly will not make you a winner. Handicapping is always involved and there are a mountain of factors which influence the outcomes of horse races. They are one tool in your arsenal. Andy was also a brilliant, brilliant writer and reading any of his books on the subject of racing, and gambling, will probably turn you into a fan. Both of Andy himself and of racing. One of my favorites was My $50,000 Year at the Races, written about his conquests of 1977.

Speed is a good figure to keep in mind. However, the fastest horse doesn't always win. I've been betting the ponies for 30 years. I have come to realize, if that horse doesn't feel like running it's best that day, he won't give 100%.

Hello. I live in FL and work a boring 8-5 job. I've handicappes dog racing for 12 years now. Im looking to learn horse racing. A lot of things are simular but I see horse racing has a lot more things to consider. But I would love to work in some capacity in the horse racing field. How can I get involved ?

I picked upw where Beyer left of and make power ratings on the same rating scale, which I convert to a morning line. My current Saratoga $1.00 win ROI is $1.15, exotics are off the charts, and my Belmont ROI was $0.9932. The Beyer method ignores pace, class, a bunch of other stuff, and gives Justify a 97 for the Preakness, while a 25k c laimer at Parx can earn the same number. Does that make sense?

Horses are not motorcyles. Even if you have everything right, you will still lose half your bets because there are conditions that will affect a horse's trip, regardless of what the horse did in the past.

I would like to share a story from a evening at Charles town racetrack in West Virginia.some years ago my racetrack cronies and I we're sitting on a bench on the apron.we we're glancing Iat our racing forms when a older hillbilly gentleman approached us and said"why our you reading that there paper boys?" "That tells you what they did not what they gonna did." Lol so true.Anyhow I havea copy of picking winner's.I recall a chapter titled larceny and betting coups and how Mr Beyer says you have to take it on faith alone.I would like to know how you adjust your figures when the drug trainers claim a horse and improve it 20-30 points in it's next start.it is blatantly obvious that these animals aren't receiving hay,oats,and water.The cat is out of the bag and the Fed's are starting to go after trainer's such as Navarro and Servis.This is just the beginning and you have the feeling that people are going to start singing like canary's when jail time is involved.it's pretty obvious when Navarro's vet had employees testify under oath that his sole purpose was to create performance enhancing drugs for use on race horses that could not be detected in post race urine samples.This is obvious that in some jurisdiction the cost to test for certain drugs is to expensive and all the bases are not covered.i always feel that being involved in racing as a trainer,or a jockey if done right is a license to steal.i know I will get comments back saying you sound like a disgruntled better and so forth.when you stop and think that after you have been cheated as a better that the track doesn't reimburse you after the fact.this is one reason why the game has been tarnished and can't attract younger and new fans IMHO.

If the speed ratings reflect the speed of a horse, then why don't they predict races? They simply do not. They are an abstraction from the most important piece of information which is the time that the horse ran in its last few races, and the experience of the punter to know which track is fast and which is not. The standard times are important in this regard but not perfect. There is no better way to compare different times at different tracks than to have the benefit of experience as there are other variables to be focusing on such as the weight, draw, jockey, trainer, distance, whether the horse is a front-runner or not, etc. The reason why the speed figures are promoted is because they are an abstraction from the most important information.

U NEED THREE THINGS TO PREDICT WINNERS, THE SPEED OF THE HORSE, THE CLASS, WHETHER GOING UP OR DOWN , AND THE CONDITION OF THE TRACK. HE IS USING TWO OF THE THREE, BUT LEAVING OUT VARIANCE, U REALLY NEED THE LAST FIVE RACE SPEEDS OF EACH HORSE IN A RACE AND THEN DO AN ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE (SAME FOR DOG RACES) AS A HIGH SPEED AT LOW VARIANCE MAY LOSE TO A SLIGHTLY LOWER SPEED WITH A HIGHER VARIANCE, AS THE VARIANCES CAN OVERLAP. IF A HORSE IS GOING UP IN CLASS S/HE WILL KEEP GOING UP TIL S/HE GETS TO AAA, AT WHICH TIME S/HE IS RUNNING WITH ALL WINNERS, AND ODDS ARE, S/HE WILL LOSE SO GO DOWN IN CLASS. (WHERE DO U GO FROM THE TOP BUT DOWN) AS FOR FAST SLOW OR MUDDY TRACKS, HE IS TAKING THAT INTO CONSIDERATION IN HIS NUMBERS. SO IF U USE HIS NUMBERS WITH THE SIX BASIC HANDICAPPING TOOLS (FIRST OF WHICH IS FORM, AS IF THE HORSE IS NOT IN TOP FORM U CAN FORGET EVERYTHING ELSE) AND THEN LOOK AT THE STABLE, JOCKEY, STABLES WITH A LOT OF WINNERS, JOCKEYS WHO WIN A LOT OF RACES DONT LIKE TO RIDE LOSERS, SO THEY TEND TO PICK WINNING HORSES, IF EVERYTHING GOES RIGHT, USUALLY THE HORSE WILL RUN AWAY WITH THE RACE BUT IF U CAN PICK THE TOP TWO AND SEE A POSSIBLE PERFECTA, BET IT. IT IS VERY HARD TO PICK THREE WINNERS, BUT U GET THE DRF AND PICK UR TOP FIVE HORSES THEN GO TO THE BEYER'S NUMBERS AND RANK THEM FIRST SECOND THIRD WITH JMP SOFTWARE, U HAVE DIAMONDS ON AN AVERAGE SPEED LINE, WITH THE WINNERS HIGHER THAN AVERAGE AND THE LOSERS LOWER THAN AVERAGE THE WINNERS JUMP OUT AT U AND U CAN SEE THE DISTANCES BETWEEN DIAMONDS IF THERE IS GONNA BE A WINNER, S/H WILL BE AT THE PEAK OF HOWEVER SHALLOW OR STEEP THE MOUNTAIN OF DIAMONDS IS AND IF U KEEP STATITISTICS ON HORSES AND UPDATE THEM DAILY U ALSO NOTE MORNING TRAINING RUNS /SPEEDS ETC U ARE GOING TO WIN A LOT OF BETS THIS WAY WHAT I DONT DO IS LOOK TO SEE WHAT THE ODDS ARE AT THE TIME OF THE RACE IF A MILLION PEOPLE ARE BETTING ON CHARLIE HORSE TO WIN AND SO HIS ODDS ARE ONE TO ONE AND I HAVE THE HORSE'S NUMBERS IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT A MILLION JOE BLOWS THINK I TRUST THE HORSES TO PERFORM OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL HOWEVER A FAST HORSE ON A SLOW OR MUDDY TRACK IS NOT THE SAME AS A FAST HORSE ON A DRY TRACK SO I LIKE TO USE STATS ON DRY TRACKS AND LEAVE OUT THE WET OR SLOW TRACKS THIS IS WHERE I THINK BEYER'S IS WASTING TIME AS HE IS NOT LOOKING AT CLASS IF A HORSE HAS GONE FROM CLASS C TO B TO A, HE IS GOING UP IN CLASS AND THE NEXT RACE HE SHOULD HIT AAA IF HE IS RACING A HORSE THAT WAS ALREADY AAA, OR HAS GONE FROM AAA, TO B, TO C, HIS NEXT RACE HE IS GOING DOWN TO D, THAT IS JUST HIS TREND, DOWNWARD AND IF SPEEDS ARE CLOSE AND VARIANCES OVERLAP, THE SLOWER HORSE CAN BREAK THROUGH AND PASS THE FASTER HORSE (GOING DOWN) WORKS THE SAME IN A DOG RACE AND U CAN SEE THIS IN THE NUMBERS IF U JUST BET HORSE ONE AND HORSE TWO R GONNA FINISH ONE AHEAD OF THE OTHER BUT U DONT SAY WHICH ORDER U LOSE MONEY WHEN U COULD HAVE BET WHICH HORSE WILL COME IN FIRST AND WHICH WILL COME IN SECOND AS THE HORSE MOVING UP IN CLASS HAS JUST BEAT, AND JUST MOVED UP IN CLASS SO BEYER'S IS LEAVING CLASS OUT OF HIS NUMBER WHICH IS WHY U NEED HIS NUMBER AND THE RACING FORMS NUMBERS AND U NEED TO DO THE CALCULATIONS OR HAVE A SPREADSHEET OR STATS PACKAGE (JMP IS THE SAS VERSION USED IN COLLEGE STAT LABS FOR UNDERGRADS AND WORKS FOR A HUGE AMOUNT OF DATA AND IS EASY TO USE, ONCE U LEARN HOW TO ENTER THE DATA U JUST CLICK ON ANOVA AND U GET THE GRAPHS U CAN ALSO USE A STAT CALCULATOR BUT U REALLY NEED A LAPTOP AND JMP. SINCE LAPTOPS WERE NOT AROUND WHEN ANDY BEYER'S STARTED OUT U CAN SEE HE IS AT A DISADVANTAGE BUT THERE IS ANOTHER BOOK WHICH SAYS U NEED THE SPEED OF THE HORSE, THE CLASS AND THE CONDITION OF THE TRACK TO PICK WINNERS AND ONE NUMBER, HIS NUMBER, IS NOT ENOUGH AN ESTIMATE MEANS NOTHING WITHOUT A RANGE A BEYER'S NUMBER NEEDS A RANGE ADDED LIKE A HUNDRED PLUS OR MINUS TWO OR A HUNDRED AND TWENTY PLUS OR MINUS THREE WHERE THE TWO OR THREE GIVES U AN IDEA OF THE RANGE WHAT HORSE RUNS EXACTLY THE SAME SPEED EVERY RACE ?? BTW, PAST IS PROLOGUE, BUT NOT THE FUTURE, U DONT KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN UNTIL THE RACE IS RUN BUT BTW, SPORTS HANDICAPPERS FOR FOOTBALL GAMES IN VEGAS HAVE PHDS IN STATISTICS AND BELIEVE ME, WHEN THEY CALCULATE POINT SPREADS THEY ARE TAKING A LOT OF THINGS INTO ACCOUNT PLAYER BY PLAYER TEAM BY TEAM INCLUDING THE TEAMS UR TEAM PLAYS AND THE TEAMS THOSE TEAMS PLAY AND THEY WEIGHT THE ODDS TO ADD UP TO ONE. BUT USE THREE FRACTIONS NOT TWO SO IT IS NOT A HALF AND A HALF BUT THAT IS A DIFFERENT TOPIC

As a gambling proposition betting on horses is one of the most difficult. The 'tax' is so high on every race w/ everything against the bettor (breakage, pool sharing w/ low priced favorites) that the idea that you can make money in the long run is unrealistic for almost everyone. You can be a brilliant handicapper, but may need to pass on your horse if not at the right price. Most people don't appreciate the concept of value. Good luck trying to make money betting on horses. You'll need it.

Randy Bailin How much money does the government earn in a typical day of racing? Answer: Nothing! The government doesn't earn anything; it just takes it. That's why it's called "the take". That's what makes it virtually impossible to beat.

Although, Mr. Beyer has merit because he is widely known, his "Speed Rating Figures" leave you to wonder what is "Speed Rating" to begin with? How does it apply to my style of Handicapping? and of what value if any, does it actually Help me handicap horse racing. - it does very little to assist you in handicapping period ! You must take into consideration Jockey and Trainer combos, condition of the track, owners inputs, weight horse must carry, final odds, distance, where and how he/she finished in last race.. all of these factors add up to winning or losing each horse race NOT, some made up speed ratings that cannot be applied to each changing condition. So, in conclusion it's this writers opinion that Beyer is a product of the racing elite, who confuse and disrupt the sport for their own personal gain!

The problem with speed ratings is that you are damned with a short price if you take the top speed horse; and you are damned by going against the top speed horse with too few winners to offset the losses. It took a few years, but speed figures killed horse race betting as a profitable vehicle when Beyer came out with the book in 1975. Information which is in the public domain has no value. Period. Beyer made a colossal mistake when he took speed figures public, but he cannot admit that, so long as he is selling them to the DRF.
@robbybonfire23
@robbybonfire23 9 лет назад
Nothing is perfect, and tracks having just a couple route races per day made it a challenge to accurately gauge the two-turn variant, from day to day. Nevertheless, Beyer and his small circle of speed ratings bettors and friends did well until the 80's when the book Picking Winners caught on and forever changed the game. Now the taxes on winnings are so high I doubt anyone under any circumstances could make money at this game. Horse race betting is dead, Beyer and the politicians both killed it.
@robbybonfire23
@robbybonfire23 9 лет назад
Let's agree, if we can, that the method works, however it no longer catches overlay value, rendering it, in effect, non-profitable. This game and all investment arenas is about making money, not just picking winners and losing money, in the long run. Why do even have to mention this? And, my God, Man, where have you been, as race tracks continue to boost the take-out, especially on exotic wagers, where the increases are hardly noticeable. You mean you can be fleeced and not even know what is going on? You are not making any money playing the horses, that much is obvious.
@YD8189
@YD8189 9 лет назад
No, they do not tell you how fast a horse ran: it is presumed they reflect the can't-pass-the-laugh test assumption that an incrediby flawed mathematical construction can accurately access the speed of a racing surface. That is they purport to measure resistance, more precisely environmental resistances such as the friction of the racing surface and how it impacts the time it will take to cover a certain distance. ANY track superintendant will tell you that tracks not only change from day to day or from hour to hour but frequently minute to minute. Beyer's figures ignore the variables of how the track is harrowed between the races, the amount of water laid down, the effect of shadow, and changes in wind direction to cite several variables. This is why he can make statements with a tone of authority that prove ludcrous: " I suspect that A.P. Indy and the rest of the California 3 year olds are a bunch of overrated mediocrities." This was based on A.P. Indy's final time of 1:49 while on the same day older horse's covered the same distance. Beyer failed to consider that the latter race was run two hours later and in that time the track was harrowed, rolled, and for all intents and purposes a differant track than A.P. Indy negotiated. There is even phtographic proof of this. Photos taken at the winner's circle when the feet of both horses were contacting the ground show a very soft track that caused A.P's indy's foot to be covered in dirt to the point where the short pastern cojoins with the long pastern. Two hours later, the track surface had been so modified that the depth of the track was far less, covering only the shoe of the horse and an inch or so of the coffin bone. Consequently, based on this Beyer denounced A.P. Indy and Bertrando as "overrated mediocrities. A.P. Indy would go on to win the Belmont which ranks as the third fastest behind Secretariat and Easy Goer and which is the fastest in the 22 running since. Similarly, he remains the only winer of the B.C. Classic to be given the comment "Ridden out". The great mathematician, Kurt Godel, proved that no mathematical system was without a fatal flaw. Beyer seems to believe otherwise which is why he once wrote, during the summer of '89, that Easy Goer and Sunday Silence wouldn't finish within a pole of Alydar and Affirmed but by 1990 had backtracked considerably saying if they continued to iimprove they would be putting up Secreatariat like numbers. A system that can produce such a huge disparity in projections--or not see that A.P. Indy was very special as a two-year old, is deeply and fatally flawed.

Dude, get a grip. Does the Beyer speed figure provide a closed form solution to all tracks under all conditions at all times, to the minute? Of course not, it's impossible. It allows the bettor to compare the speed of the horses in a race, and applies a correction factor to normalize the track bias. This correction factor, of course, has to make several assumptions. No model is perfect, but some are definitely useful. This one is very useful, but you have to realize its limitations. Beyer freely admits them in this video, if you care to listen.

HI Bongo,I one race pick does not mean anything,its a long term game, When I was playing the horses seriously, and that means going every day, watching all the races at my track, and dedicating 60 to 70 hours a week to my handicapping I made a profit betting on the horses, some days I won and some days I lost but over time I would make a profit, people do it , not many thats for sure , but if you work hard , and you know what you are doing it can be done,
