The law....Good review if you have a slippery memory...
I am not a lawyer, Canadian Firearm Regulations are ALWAYS subject to change and interpretation. I am passing on the information I am given by the Canadian Firearm Program and the RCMP. It is YOUR responsibility to verify the information and keep current on any changes.

Non-Restricted Storage Must be unloaded. Must be secured by a locking device so that it cannot be fired or must be locked into a room or container that is hard to break into. Exception: An unloaded non-restricted firearm can be stored temporarily (separate from ammunition) if it is needed for predator control. Vehicle storage: Gun must be locked in the trunk area or other similar compartment. If vehicle does not have such a compartment, the firearm must be put out of sight and the vehicle locked securely.

Another thing about trigger locks - if you have a bunch of them and they're not of the same brand, it's possible to get 2 sides that lock in to each other, that don't have any numbers/combination on either side; meaning, you've got a trigger lock on your gun that you can't get off without drilling and cutting it off. Now when I'm at the range, I always put the 2 correct sides back together as soon as I take them off then gun.

It's not even Trudeau, yeah he's opposed to guns but he's actually a great prime minister. I'd vote conservative if they gave a shit about my disabilities. Politics in this country are a joke anyway. Majority of voters don't even research what they're voting for. Also lots of older people just vote for who they've BEEN voting for all along. The young and educated are completely misguided so they're no help. People shit on Trudeau, when he is getting Canadians home right now and giving us extra money if we need it during a crisis. What conservative government would be helping my LOW-INCOME family out during this pandemic without cutting every service to do so. Liberal means for the people, conservative is for the STATE.(Don't mean state as in US, I mean state as in government body) Only thing I don't agree with is banning assault weapons and handguns. Other than that, long live a government who actually takes care of people, rather than helping the middle-class exclusively and talking shit about rival parties.

Rod, some of us aim for bare legal compliance, so trigger locks (only on my restricteds) are set up to barely meet the legal definition. Combination, easy sequence, mostly intact, so it's a couple of clicks away from being made safe and holstered (yes, I'm talking restricted - I've never put a trigger lock on a non-restricted). Our laws are already insanely draconian and if we keep going above and beyond, the law enforcement community will start to expect that of us and will push for more bending over. Those who don't bend over enough will be punished by process (legal fees). If a criminal has enough control over your gun to take possession of it, load it, and attempt to cycle the action, it being trigger-locked or cable-locked would be the least of your concerns.
@TRaTSeRiF
@TRaTSeRiF 10 лет назад

Yup. I lost all of my guns today and they were ordered to be forfeited and destroyed. Back story. Last November I posted a tutorial on an sks take down. I posted the video on my Facebook. My ex girlfriend called the police on me saying that my guns were unsafely stored n that I was dangerous. The police came into my house after seeing the video of my torn apart gun(was not yet reassembled. But was apparently capable of firing even with the trigger assembly removed) And they took it along with all my other guns. My other guns were all in a safe. The judge said since I had a teenager in my house who could reassemble the gun n use it for harm. That all my weapons should be destroyed. My license revoked. And I was to pay a fine. They took 9 guns. Even the ones with trigger locks. N fur what ever reason have me 8 months probation. The law is so corrupted. This costed be well over 10k.

(1) An individual may store a non-restricted firearm only if (a) it is unloaded; (b) it is (i) rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device, (ii) rendered inoperable by the removal of the bolt or bolt-carrier, or (iii) stored in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into; and (c) it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into. My interpretation of the laws is that you must follow (i) AND either (ii) or (iii), meaning two locks. 2 locks NR, 3 for R

The idea behind the bolt being removed is for multiple guns and easier storage. Remove all ammo from room. Guns with bolts go into one safe properly secured. Other guns remove the bolt put the bolt or firing pin into another safe lock that in the safe with your other guns. Now you can display your other guns on a rack as storage but they are non functional.

My understanding of safe storage for UNRESTRICTED firearms is that they need to be stored UNLOADED with a minimum of ONE lock... locked vehicle, locked house, locked room, locked locker, locked safe, trigger lock or action lock. Ammo must be stored separately unless it is locked in the same case as the gun... which can be everything mentioned above EXCEPT trigger or cable locked firearms. Am I wrong on any of that?

Skinny Bob, yeah, and in those few rare cases, the Canadian mainstream media (especially The Toronto Star) tried to spin it as a travesty, a miscarriage of justice, etc-- as if the people defending themselves had gotten away with murder. And the press was damn sure to give the names and personal details of the people who were defending themselves. |Oh, and don't forget how much these folks had to pay in legal fees-- it's not like you are going to get away with defending yourself with a firearm if you don't have a lot of money to spend on lawyers and all the rest of it. Anyhow, it's not like this is a uniquely Canadian problem; look at the crap gun owners go through in Minnesota and other very liberal states. And at least we are no where near as bad as the UK... they are just mindbogglingly insane when it comes to charging people who are defending themselves or their property-- even if it's just with a stick or a cricket bat or whatever, never mind firearms.

You can get ridiculously long cable locks. But for a over/under & side by side a trigger lock is the next best thing. That being said. I once had a mini strong-box that I stored all my keys in. For whatever reason I threw it out when I was cleaning. Frustrating yes, but it took me less then 15 minutes to unlock 7 guns with both cable and trigger locks. Your best bet is a safe. Even with that though. Unless your safe is inside Fort Knox, that safe can/will be broken in to if a person has the skill/time/determination to do so. But that stands for pretty much everyphysical item in this whole world.

@@Seekingtruth-mx3ur There are no changes to the storage regs so far in 2020. A cable lock, if used properly so you can't close the bolt, is fine on a non-restrict... so long as there is no ammo "readily available" for that specific gun. Most people understand that as ammo stored in a different room, but it's how ever the police want to interpret "readily available" since there is no definition in the code. Q.C. Phil I think it is to deter impulsive use, also to prevent children from using them. Don't know why it can be unlocked in vehicle. Unattended it has to be in locked compartment (trunk) or in cabin of vehicle with doors locked out of sight if no separate locking compartment.

I'd like to know why bull-pup centerfire firearms are legal to purchase/own and why bullpup pellet guns aren't legal to purchase. Example: FX Wildcat which is longer than 26 inches even without the stock. I would love to have one in 30cal. for when I go for walks in the bush just for protection.

Yes, you are by law to lock your ammo.
@rw7594
@rw7594 3 года назад
Nope. Just not within easy access unless it is stored with the firearm eg a locked container or safe. Page 199 of the course handbook. Also on page 93. 😁 I lock my ammo anyway. An adult can cut the box but it keeps a kid out for those who habe them and parents aren't good at teaching or discipline.

Has any of these laws changed in the intervening years? Can you still store ammo in a safe box with an unloaded firearm? Things have just changed so quickly up here in Canada, I want to make sure I'm still following the law

Civil Advantage I'm also curious about this. A locked soft case seems like it would be less secure than a locked hard case, but both are really just minor deterrents. I bought a Benelli MR1 that came with a really nice soft case. I have all of my guns in a gun safe at home, and ammo locked up in a separate steel cabinet, but I just wonder for transport. Regardless, I also always transport every gun with a locking device (Trigger/cable lock), but on the off chance that I might forget to put one on there...

Does the gun safe need to be bolted to the floor? Are you breaking the law if you don't bolt the gun safe to a permanent part of the house or building?

I made my own gun cabinet out of wood, and if somebody really wanted to they could just take the screws out of the hinges and walk away with my guns. There is a lock on the doors though so does this apply to the 4th method? I have cable locks on all my bigger guns (12 gauge, 270, and SKS) but do I legally have to? Or does this count as a gun safe?

please for the love of god mention which big box store i can get a sweet case like that for 30 bucks lol on a serious note, does ammo have to be stored in a different room, or can it just be out of sight like in a drawer or somewhere not immediately available.

Different room. The whole point of it is so you can't load a firearm quickly not so someone else can't. Canada doesn't like it when you defend yourself from intruders.

I never ended up actually doing my PAL and getting a legal firearm, but I have, and am currently studying far too much statute and caselaw (lawschool will do that to you) and was under the impression that under Firearms Act S.5(a)(b)(c), any firearm must be unloaded, rendered inoperable, and locked in a secure container, so "it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into". That is unless one is in an area in which the firearm may be needed for defense of predators or one is in the wilderness and is hunting (in accordance with all applicable federal, provincial, and municipal legislation of courses)(S.5(2)(iii)). So apparently, unless one is up in the boonies, he must keep his firearm unloaded, inoperable, and locked up very securely. I've only got a 2009 version of the act here infront of me, so it may have changed, and I'm pretty sure you would know more than I. I'm just curious about the discrepancy between statute law and your advice. Or maybe I just didn't pay enough attention...;P

Does ammo need to be in a different room? Or say ammo locked up in one maybe cheaper safe, guns locked in another and both in the same room. I just want to know if theres ways to store ammo without it being at another location and without a massive safe to store ammo in that you also trust to protect your firearms.
@AutoStigmata
@AutoStigmata 10 лет назад
You're allowed to leave a non-restricted gun without a lock in a locked room. Also, anyone know if keeping ammo for a gun in its side saddle or other cartridge holder counts as being loaded? I was recently told that it is illegal to keep ammo attached to an unloaded gun even if it is locked in a safe.
@ak4344

The locked room thing is true. I don't talk too much about that because it get's people into trouble. "Oh, I keep my bedroom door locked all the time...except this time. Any possible way you'd let me off this charge Judge"?? That kind of thing. Law enforcement is also aware of the storage methods I mentioned so if they're not sure about what you've done they'll recommend charges and let the crown sort it out. You don't want that....

My firearms are stored in a locked room with a deadbolt. Not easily broken into They have cable locks on them too. Ammo in the room. I also have the pamphlet from CFSC on safe storage tacked to the wall inside. If ever a problem with cops, they can read that.
@ScorpionCA

my idea was always just putting them all in a locked closet, it is hard to break into and it is a locked room so I think I could store the ammo in there too (I don't because all the times I looked it up it was vague answers and I am not about to catch that case)

Probably a stupid question, but if I have a side saddle for shells like yours there, can they be full of ammo while stored if ammo is allowed in the same case? Or loaded magazines not in the gun for that matter as well?
