Paul takes us through how we secured our polytunnel to the ground and also the cover to the frame. The polytunnel is now in its third growing season and seen many storms, including the Beast from the East of 2018.

After my first polytunnel blew away and got destroyed I bought a sturdier one and (after watching lots of different videos) secured it in the same way as you did here, and also buried the cover. I went to check on it this morning and it survived storm Isha last night (some others at the allotment did not) Thanks so much for the helpful video!!

Paul, Paul, Paul...thank you so much for this video...I came across it yesterday after coming home from my plot....crestfallen, heartbroken and everything in between after scraping my poly tunnel off the side of my fruit cage (Ciara has done a thorough job). After watching your video I remembered that my wonderful predecessor had left me loads of iron bars and rods. So today I went off to the plot, not wanting to spend any money really I hammered 4 metal tree stakes in each corner and secured with cable tie (they are taller than the iron bars) and then hammered the shorter iron bars in the ground and tied them to the remaining bars. I dare say that it now seems much more secure. Thank you for the inspiration.....Next step.....repairing the cover....wish me luck x

@paulsavident
@paulsavident 5 лет назад
Indeed Pat. I am glad I did the video as I might not have noticed that the top tape had come off the frame, which would have let the wind in and then the whole thing might have acted like a big balloon. 😀

That looks very secure. It's always best to over engineer when it comes to wind. 'Saves a lot of heartache at the end of the storm... Interesting about the Portuguese cabbage. I grow cabbage under door screening fastened to 3/4" poly pipe hoops & never allow it to be exposed to the dreaded cabbage whites. Our area is a big agricultural producer of canola (from the mustard side of the brassica family) & as a result, the population of those butterflies is massive. Luckily we don't have a pigeon problem... yet... 🤞🐛

helpful! On whitefly, I read a good-sounding idea, and that was to pick their favorite food (for me, it's pak choi) and grow some in a corner away from your main crops to make them happy...and then they might leave your other crops alone. I'm not sure that'll work, but I'll give it a try this year or next. :D -Wendy

Just the video I was after! I wanted to ask about the colour chosen. I read that clear and then white allows maximum light compared to other colours. Was the colour green you chose for your polytunnel just a personal preference? Or didn't it make much difference? Also, would you consider covering it with polythene and then put the existing green cover on top or are you happy with the current setup?
@paulsavident
@paulsavident 4 года назад
We were restricted on budget and did not want to spend more than £100, and in that price range I found the green polys seemed to have better reviews. Certainly in terms of heat and light I have not noticed any difference to others similarly placed on our site. I would place it in a different area of our plot if I could have done as the big shed from our plot neighbours and also the large buddleai (which needs a cut back) does shade this area. We have grown tomatoes well in it, and this year the cucumbers and salads are doing well. Over wintered salad leaves did OK too. I have also read that clear/opaque let more light in though we have not had an issue with this green cover, which is now in its fourth year of full growing. When we do need to replace it I would do more research on covers, though would certainly not shy away from replacing like with like. 😊

@paulsavident
@paulsavident 3 года назад
Linda, the velcro tabs came with the polytunnel, so are firmly attached... however I did need to use a strong tape to add length to some of them as the velcro tabs were too short to fit onto the rails. 🤔 I have seen some people tape a plastic ring to the cover and then attach this to the frame of the polytunnel, though do not know how this worked for them longterm. Let us kn ow how you get on as we'd be keen to know what solution you go with and how it works for you. 🤞🤞🤞
