Tips and suggestions on how to secure your kayak, fishing gear, and your trailer from potential thieves.
Thieves are becoming more and more prevalent. They are typically opportunists who want a quick and easy score. They usually have 3 tools - a 2 inch pipe, a pair of bolt cutters, and a set of wrenches - which can defeat most of the average locks people use in UNDER 1 MINUTE and without drawing suspicion from others!
By taking a few extra steps and investing in quality security devices, you can help protect your prized kayak and fishing gear from opportunistic thieves.

A trailer is made to move, park, a sit with valuables. In today's society you may cross paths with people who want and know how to get those items. This is a great deterrent video that covers every aspect of a sitting trailer without the owner being present. A boat launch, a gas station, a supermarket for supplies.... All potential problem areas when loaded. A necessary evil. Good job! 👏👏👏👏

I'm impressed. You thought about almost every which way a thief can steal your kayak, your box, your tires, and the hitch. Most Excellent Video!!! Thanks for sharing and most importantly, you gave me some great ideas. Thank you @Scott Miller.

First off, super well done video indeed! I'm almost afraid of saying too much because all your viewers are going to think that PACLOCK is paying you to do all of this!!! Nonetheless, you've done your homework and leverage PACLOCKs just the way we're hoping everyone will! Like you said, just make your stuff harder to steal than the person next to you! And the key convenience where they all use one key is definitely unique to PACLOCK as well. Padlocking the chains is also brilliant! We've been getting calls about this sort of thing and, as simple as it might sound, we find that people just don't think about locking up the chains even with a "regular" padlock. You definitely get PACLOCK's gold star for putting a great solution together! Good luck with your tournaments, may the fishing Gods look favorably upon your hooks!

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the video and no, this was NOT a paid or sponsored promo. I actually had initially ordered different locks for the trailer, but came across a few other videos on RU-vid where those locks were defeated in less than 5 seconds and it "opened my eyes" to how adepts thieves can be. Excellent point about using chains. I actually meant to advise others to use thick chains versus a cable for securing their kayaks as thieves will likely have a pair of bolt cutters in their arsenal and cables are easily cut. I haven't added up the $$ I have in my kayak and fishing gear (mainly so I don't have to tell my wife!!) but it is enough to make me think twice about letting someone steal everything in under 2 minutes and sell it on FB Marketplace or Craigslist in under 24 hours. I appreciate your quality, customer service and the fact that you are a USA made company. Happy to recommend you to other kayak fishermen who want to protect their investment!

You should try to work a deal with proven Indusrties to sell your puck locks in their coupler lock.

@@Astrogeek61 Well... it was PACLOCK who got him where he is in terms of his good graces for padlocks. We used to OEM manufacture his pucks for him from when he was a start-up and for about the first six years of his company's existence. There's a whole crazy back and forth with juicy details in a LockPickingLawyer video that I'd rather not detail again. But I'll just say that, while Proven has good products, the guy running the company is not someone I'd want to ever associate with again. We broke off the relationship with them. Recently we even filed a legal complaint against him and his company for his company starting up a website to blackmail PACLOCK into not saying bad things about his company... we won, he lost. That's public domain type stuff that you can google and find. That's worth a read as well because it gives you insight into the guy running that company. Our plans are to simply come out with our own "Proven-Like" products to go after his business. Stay tuned...

@@paclockpres.9805 sorry to hear about the legal woes. I have one of their trailer hitch locks and it's a good product. I'm very impressed with your products and company, and recently bought a whole suite of UCS locks from you for my small travel trailer. After spending more than $25k on the trailer I didn't want it disappear from my driveway. I'm probably also going to replace some other locks around the house so I can carry fewer keys. Thanks for your products, and for the feedback.

Thanks KPD! I had a buddy have his landscaping trailer (with all of his equipment) stolen and started adding up all the fishing and kayak gear in my mind - decided to research and invest a little more in security than a $7 hitch pin lock and a couple of Masterlocks to ensure someone isn't catching MY FISH with MY GEAR!

Wow, so many locks. I do like the idea of locking the chains back but where I live no worries about anything getting stolen but I can’t imagine needing all of that.

Paclock is a good brand. My camper is set up pretty much the same way (fewer padlocks, but wheel chain and padlock, receiver pin lock, coupler pin lock, etc.). One additional thing I did for my camper is that I got a coupler lock from Proven Industies (provenlocks.com) that covers the entire coupler and secures the safety chains as well. They sell it with a puck lock but you can call them and get it without, and then go buy a paclock puck lock keyed the same as your other locks. I got the cone-shaped puck lock on mine. I am also getting the cam locks replaced so I will have a single key for the entire exterior.

There's an old saying....Locks are made to keep "Honest" people out. Unfortunately, Cordless grinders are the Worst tool invented when it comes to Thieves! The weak link with your rod tubes are the "U" bolts. Cut those and worry about opening them later. Always park in a well lit areas, again unfortunately Thieves don't always work at night. My brother had his catalytic convertors in mid day at the boat ramp.

I’m not sure what ratchet straps you are using, but there are some out there with Stainless Steel wire on the edges that can’t be cut with your average knife. Gene Jensen (Flukemaster) had these on one of his videos. I don’t believe it was a video on just the straps, but just something he mentioned in a video.

yes kayaks usually have a HIN (hull identification number) its needed as ohio requires registration of boats

You think that same kind of build with the 12 ft kayak would be okay on back of a Jeep Cherokee and have enough left and right turn clearance

I am sad 😢 you live & fish in areas that need $1000+ worth of locks to keep your gear from being stolen! I am sooooo glad I live in Canada 🇨🇦 where there aren’t thieves waiting to steal your trailer as soon as you park! Geesh, how do you sleep at night??

There’s a lot of boat ramps near me that’s its common to have trucks with no tailgates and window smashed out all from thieves.

No idea how it is up North,, but trailer thieves are prevalent considering it can only take a few seconds when not properly secured.. Pretty sure I didn't spend $1000 on locks - but when you add up a pedal drive kayak, several rods/reels and other gear - I wouldn't trust it to a $5 padlock and hitch lock.
@keithhughes2936
@keithhughes2936 3 года назад
I'm not knocking on what you did but it still can be gotten. I talked with a guy who had his stuff pretty secure because of previous problems with theft. He did a high dollar locks on the hitch and chains used carriage bolts where he could and chained his wheels. But a gas torch and a winch on a lowboy trailer and he still lost everything. The chains and the front part of the hitch was still on his truck. The cops were eventually arrested the crooks but his stuff was already gone. If they want it they're going to get it.
@scottmiller9213
@scottmiller9213 3 года назад
@@keithhughes2936 You are correct. If someone has enough motivation, tools and time - it can happen to anyone. I'm just trying to make it as difficult as possible. The trailer and kayak are locked in my garage when not hooked up to the truck.
@MysticalDragon73

@@scottmiller9213 exactly. a determined thief will get whatever they want. Ive also seen locking wheel chocks used to make it harder. Most thieves look for an easy target. They see something like this and they will likely move on to the next one. Its sad that its needed. Also a motion sensing alarm is good too.
