Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) is a life sustaining method of medical care that supports life by supporting vital organs by providing oxygen and/or diversion of blood flow within the body. Various modalities of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are available - veno-venous (V-V), veno-arterial (V-A), V-P (veno-pulmonary), and additional cannulation configuration options which are determined by underlying disease process, need of support, and indication.
Sedation is commonly used within the critical care space, and during an ECMO run. The awareness of and benefit of decreasing sedation and "waking up" those who meet criteria has shown to help decrease delirium, and in the appropriate situation, increase favorable long term outcomes.
Physical mobility during ECMO, especially the adult V-V, V-A, and V-P population, is becoming more widely practiced with a safe team of ECMO Specialists and clinicians. A multidisciplinary care team approach is instrumental to ensuring safe practice and positive results.
