Why would you aim for the numbers? As an instructor I never teach my students to aim for the numbers. If you get low and slow going into Sedona could be a disaster. Aiming at the 1000’ markers give you added safety across the threshold. If you follow the ILS glide slope it does not set you up to land at the numbers. Not trying to be argumentative just wondering your reasoning.
You want to aim for the numbers initially because runway behind you does you no good. Keep in mind aiming point and landing point are not the same thing. If you are landing on a 2000' runway you won't be aiming a 1000' down the runway, you'll be aiming at the numbers. I teach to land on a 5000' runway with the same aiming technique as I would on a 2000' runway. Consistency in training is key.
Aiming further down the runway than the numbers could be a good idea if the wind is strong. Reportedly, there can be a strong downdraft near the runway threshold. A little extra altitude would help in that situation.
