With rear-engined cars now truly getting a foothold-they occupied the entire front row-and with rapidly improving tire development, Scotland’s Jim Clark raised the qualifying records by almost eight miles per hour to sit on the pole at 158.828 mph.
Tragedy struck near the end of the second lap when a huge accident took place on the main straight, stopping the race for the first time ever for a reason other than rain. Two drivers, Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald, both perished in the fiery accident, which basically ended the use of gasoline as a fuel in the “500.”
The race, however, was a triumph for A.J. Foyt in a traditional Offenhauser-powered Watson “roadster” as he won his second Indianapolis 500, although this would mark the very last occasion on which a front-engined car would enter victory lane.

RU-vid offers all the old Indy 500s since they started filming the event. A.J. was a world class mechanic, as well as a very good driver. Designed and built his own cars. A strategists as well. On 3 of his 4 Indy victories, he just outlasted the competition on the lead lap. He could take the heat, and he seemed to know just how hard to push his car. These old cars will gladly go past the red line, and blow up if your not careful. No abs, no electronic stuff, no rev limiter. Lose your concentration for a split second, you will not win. Those old cars had less regulation. Sometimes well over 30 gallons of fuel on board. What you see here, may be the worst accident in televised Indy history. Wow, thanks for the vid.😊

I was a few months short of being 14 when this...one of my favorite all-time Indianapolis "500" races of all I have followed (and that's 61 years as of now 2-14-2023). Yes...this race may have been one of the best all-time "500" Indy races IF: veteran favorite, Eddie Sachs, and upcoming sports car driver, Dave Macdonald had not been in that terrible second lap accident; Jim Clark and teammate Dan Gurney had the trusted Firestone tires over the British Dunlops (that were good only for road racing); that the Mickey Thompson design "skate cars" had special made Firestone tires instead of Sears Allstate racing tires; Parnelli's rushed fuel stop that caused the gas tank to explode in "Old Calhoun" # 98; then, there's proven Champ, Rodger Ward...and his wrong fuel injection settings. Ward, might have been the winner of that 48th "500" running had more fuel pit stops than plan had happened. Who knows?! As to this film footage...I haven't seen it before. It was always good in many of the Indy "500" race to hear the late and great I.M.S. Motor Racing radio Network, Sid Collins do the narration. (Gosh! I missed his race day "500" coverage! He was a man who, like chief track announcer for decades at the Indy Speedway, Tom Carnegie, did so well to make the "500" have that unique flavor) You know, my favorite race drivers of that '64 race were right on front row. My parents and I went to that first day of Time Trials that May and were midway up the new third turn grandstand. What a view! So many famous drivers to see! And the sound ! Loved the sound, especially the newly developed Indy Ford engines. One upcoming good driver that I liked was, Bobby Marshman. It was a tragedy to read and hear from the media of back in November and early December of 1964 of his tire testing crash at the one mile Phoenix Raceway. I had high Hope's for him and his chief mechanic, Jack Beckley to get the following year's new design Lola car (that veteran, Bud Tinglestad drove) for the '65 "500". I personally think, Marshman would have won Indy within two years had he not died. And, lastly...as to the music of this film...it was great! I, myself, liked many documentaries of the 50s and up to the early 1970s to be a well composed "dramatic score" if you do things like classic auto racing...avation/outer space ... and some historic travel scenes. That style of music is sorely missed by many who "long for the simpler times".

I remember Marshman's debut at the Indy qualifying heats. 190+ MPH lap, when 165 was as good as it got. What a loss when he died!

These retro videos are great, but is there anyway you can upload them in the original 4:3 aspect ratio? The videos are being distorted from their original format when they're uploaded in 16:9 aspect ratio.

I've commented on this channel over the years asking them to make corrections to past videos that had issues. They have yet to reply or respond to any of my requests nor have they corrected or re-uploaded any of the videos.

This race had a great mix of front engine roadsters and new rear engine cars and one of the most tragic crashes in Indy history.

The Sachs McDonald crash is super hard to watch. Please put a disclaimer if possible. But it is great footage of the race. Great to see it on here

Yes, but I’ve always liked AJ. I would not have wanted to work for him though.
