How should we assess evidence of aliens or intelligent life? MSNBC’s Ari Melber interviews astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and former CIA director John Brennan about that challenge in the wake of a new Pentagon report. Brennan says the U.S. must “try to understand what is unexplainable,” while Tyson expounds on his steep skepticism of the evidence offered while encouraging believers to "go catch the aliens" if they can. (This conversation is one part of a broader special report.) (This interview is from MSNBC’s “The Beat with Ari Melber, a news show covering politics, law and culture airing nightly at 6pm ET on MSNBC. www.thebeatwithari.com).

@@vernpascal1531 So, why do you think these are aliens? Why do you ignore other explanations? Please understand that aliens are the LEAST LIKELY explanation for these anomalies. There are many reasons why: 1. The size of the universe prohibits interstellar travel. 2. IF a civilization achieved interstellar travel, it would still take far too long to be useful. Any meaningful travel would still take thousands of years. 3. The chances of aliens discovering us is incredibly unlikely. We are technological infants and have barely made a splash in the ocean of stars. We've only had radio communication capabilities for roughly a century and our signals haven't traveled far enough to be of any consequence. 4. IF a civilization discovered us, they'd need to travel faster than light to reach us. Not to mention, they'd have to be close enough to see us, not dinosaurs. As far as we know, matter cannot be accelerated to exceed the speed of light. There is a reason photons are massless... 5. Why would they be interested in us? Even if they were interested, why would they spend the past ~70 years abducting people and killing livestock and flying around the skies at night with their lights on?!?! It's ridiculous. For the time and effort required for their studies, you'd think they'd have gathered everything they need by now... There are other points, but I'll keep it short. The conclusion is this: If you apply Occam's razor to the situation, it becomes very clear that any number of explanations would be more appropriately applied to these phenomena than the notion that visitations by extra terrestrials have been occurring for nearly a century, which have left no evidence whatsoever... Unless you consider ridiculous stories and fuzzy images/videos to be good evidence. It's so funny how "The Grays" didn't exist until they were introduced into popular culture, and then "everyone" started "seeing" them.

@@HEARTS-OF-SPACE mh kind of disagree. you have a point with the traditional science, but he clearly lacks of a certain curiosity. For his explanation of those videos, he isolates them completly from the eyewitness acounts and from the radar data just to ridicule those who want to have a closer look at those images of the video. He is accusing dozens if not hundreds of people of lying just that he can explain away those images as a sensor failure. Maybe you got another one, with the unsubstantiated alien narrative. Okay therefore we clearly lack of hard data cause we probably havent seen those entities, but have we seen images of the molten part of the earth? We dont have images of the boundary layer where the continents slip away on top of that molten earth. But do we call plate tectonic an unsubstantiated theory? I mean sometimes sensor data is enough to proof extraodinary claims. If you dig deeper in the current investigations you'll see that it more and more becomes unlikely that they are manmade, just by looking at the sensor data. Thats why i think he lacks of this special kind of curiosity, to think the unthinkabe, like the plate tectonic. His explanation of whole fleets having collectiv hallucinations and to the same time multiple sensors have malfunctions on the same lat/lon-coordinates is equally wacky. Hope you could understand me, I'm not a native speaker. Have a good one :)
@HEARTS-OF-SPACE
@HEARTS-OF-SPACE 3 года назад
@@MrBrainneeded I appreciate your candid honesty and your willingness to concede certain points. However, the core of the Earth and plate tectonics have been studied for a long time and have hard data to back them up. I agree that there are tons of eyewitness accounts and stories and even some (extremely poor quality) pictures and videos of unidentified phenomena in the skies, which many people immediately link to aliens. I think NDT is basically just saying, "We don't know what they are, but we also have no evidence they are anything more than what they appear to be." Speculation is fine, but for people to claim he isn't curious isn't accurate...I mean, he's a scientist, so he's automatically more grounded and curious than most people. He also understands how important it is to approach everything rationally, so he doesn't let his imagination or bias dictate his conclusions. People just don't seem to understand how unlikely alien visitations are. The universe is incomprehensibly vast, and that alone limits interstellar travel. Even at the speed of light, it would take thousands of years for us to travel anywhere meaningful, as our lifespans are incredibly short on a cosmic scale. When I say meaningful, I mean anywhere that is beyond our immediate field of view, which would appear as much older versions through our telescopes, due to the excruciatingly slow speed of light. We already know much about nearby stars and planetary systems, so we'd want to shoot for much further stars if we wanted to discover anything of consequence. Also, people assume aliens of equal or higher technological capabilites exist in the same sliver of time that we do. The universe is billions of years old and there's no good reason to believe civilizations would exist simultaneously while being so close to each other (which they would have to be). Of course, they could, but in order for a civilization to find us, they'd almost have to know we're here, since all they would see with their telescopes (or equivalent technology) would likely be dinosaurs, or some other period before we existed. They wouldn't pick up any of our signals, because we've only been using radios for about a century. That leaves chance, and the odds of them stumbling upon us is astronomically low (pardon the pun). Of course, they could be here, but a thinking person would need far more evidence before jumping on the bandwagon. Im not saying it would be impossible for aliens to have the means to reach us, but like I said, they'd realistically have to already know about us. Also, physics suggest that FTL travel is not possible, and we're as close to certain on that as we can be. So unless alien lifespans are thousands or even millions of years, they'd probably have little interest in visiting our planet. I hope you take care as well.

I think it's pretty clear that these things are non human technology. The most compelling piece of evidence is the technology itself (which has been officially acknowledged to exist). I mean these things literally break our physics as we know them, it is clearly at least a thousand years ahead of us probably much more. Before you say it's Russian or chinese remember these things have been seen since the 1940s. People seem to think the 2004 Nimitz encounter was the first time a UFO has been seen but really it's just the first that is being taken seriously because its impossible to just dismiss as swamp gas and crazy people hallucinating. I think it's even more insane to think that America, Russia or China have not only made this incredible leap in technology but have managed to keep it secret for over 70 years and that doesn't make any sense cause if they had this world changing technology they would definitely use it.

@Frank Marano I too have done a lot of research in this subject the reason being I once saw something I couldn't explain, it wasn't as far fetched as some other peoples accounts but was still enough to trigger my interest. I'm not trying to jump to conclusions saying it's aliens that's why I just said I think it's not human technology after all it could be interdimensionals, intraterrestrial or time travellers (or maybe even all of the above). I just think that aliens is the hypothesis that best fits the evidence especially when you consider the countless accounts of alien body's. And who says we haven't detected them? Just because the government says they haven't seen any evidence to suggest it's alien doesn't mean they're telling the truth. After all they've been lying about it for over 70 yrs and are only just now being forced to admit that the phenomenon is real, it's obvious that some people in the government don't want this stuff in the public eye and are still doing what they can to down play the subject.

I think it's extremely likely that other civilizations exist, I just don't think they're casually visiting Earth. Interstellar travel is an absolutely insane concept. The universe is prohibitively massive and traveling between stars would take an absurd amount of time. Sure, science fiction makes it sound like a non-issue by assuming that FTL travel is the solution, and it works fine for works of fiction, but in reality, it would require an obscene amount of energy to accelerate even the smallest object to those speeds. There's a reason photons are massless and are the only particles that can achieve the speed of....light. The chances of two civilizations existing at the same time and being in relative close proximity is extremely unlikely. Even more unlikely are the chances any two civilizations would cross paths. They'd honestly have to find us by chance, because it's not like any of our radio signals have traveled far enough to be of any consequence...we're technological infants. Maybe not, but it can be tricked into seeing something that's not there by other means: "The aspect of the technology that raises eyebrows, however, is the use of laser-induced plasma filaments to create floating images in the air. According to the patent document: “...it is possible to generate a 2D or 3D volumetric image in space. This is analogous to the rastering of an electron beam in a cathode ray tube based television. In one potential embodiment, a laser system would be mounted on the back of an air vehicle such that the beam can be rastered using optics and mirrors to generate a large ‘ghost’ image in space. This ‘ghost’ image would appear to detract the homing missile away from the tangible air vehicle." The patent does not make any mention of using plasma filaments to fool anything other than missile seekers. That having been said, the ability to draw objects in the sky would seemingly account for one aspect of the UFO sightings reported by the U.S. Navy in 2004 and 2014-2015. It might be possible to draw the “tic tacs” and “spheres encased in a cube” sighted by the U.S. Navy. Tyson accidentally alluded to something very interesting.... he said humans are “ripe” to understand some thing we DONT understand in a context we DO understand… he also said We are “pre-conditioned” to Believe more than we are pre-conditioned to question… Both of those statements beg the question though… Who did the gardening in order to “ripen” us, and who’s behind the propaganda to precondition us? What’s the first story in human history about aliens? Isnt it God and the Angels and the demons? Aren’t they just intelligent life forms not from this earth? In a nutshell, the Bible says God is preparing a war against the demons. “Armageddon”. At that time he will also wipe out wicked people who follow the demons on earth. The demons have already been cast out of heaven and are imprisoned within the vicinity of the earth. And the demons know the war is coming to destroy them, so they want allies and they’re going to bring as many down with them as they can… What allies would they seek on this earth? Wouldn’t it be the military? So basically God is planning an alien invasion, and the demons are here misleading humans forcing this propaganda in movies that the alien invaders are the bad guys, Preconditioning us to believe without doing the research, so that we will choose their side when the final battle comes. Just my thoughts, maybe I’m crazy. It would make for a good movie though!

These phenomena are seen all over the world, not just in the US. It's good to be skeptical, but there is something out there we can't identify. Pilots capture images with their sensors but but it is because they see something physical, or it wouldn't appear on their sensors, so a lot of weak arguments. Here’s an idea - if those UAPs are so far beyond our 5th and 6th gen fighter aircraft, maybe they are technologically advanced enough to outsmart our “smart phones”. The fighter pilots who are professionally trained observers all note that they are seen when they want to be seen and go off of radar/sonar in the blink of an eye. If our military and air traffic control technology can’t spot them, do you think you should be bashing the tiny camera on an iPhone 8? We are preconditioned to believe? Until this footage was released and even now, most people are skeptics and people who publicly state they have seen them are mocked as ostracized as whackjobs. Maybe the reason why they have been mostly seen by military is because they are primarily interested in seeing what level of technology / weapons the world’s militaries have developed? Just say in’.

@@photonboy999 They’re making a fundamental epistemological error in demanding that pure scientific principles be adhered to in studying this phenomenon. People keep wanting to apply the standards of scientific methodology to this subject when it’s essentially not appropriate. Science was developed to help us understand the natural world, with it’s regular, repeatable forces and processes. Given that what people are seeing are described to be structured, metallic craft performing maneuvers that are impossible by known physics and aerodynamics and appear to be intelligently controlled, we have to assume there is intelligent intention behind these craft; and thus are not natural phenomenon following the predictable laws of nature. Put more simply, given the apparent nature of the phenomenon, it’s reasonable to assume that such technology isn’t going to “naturally” be left for us to find; “scientific proof” will not be forthcoming as if we were studying plate tectonics or biological functions. Therefore the question isn’t, “do they exist?” The question is, “is there enough evidence to warrant serious research?” Although it is true that we do not have the kind of evidence that can prove the existence of the phenomenon in such a way that satisfies consensus, we have to keep in mind that evidence that does not provide proof is still evidence that can contribute to increasing the probability of a given hypothesis being correct and of such phenomenon existing. It’s not an either/or equation. Science is not a simple polemic with only two bifurcatory choices. When multiple lines of evidence converge, it greatly increases the probability that evidence supports an hypothesis; even when none of those lines of evidence can provide a crucial test to constitute what would be considered proof. For example, before the science of genetics was discovered, which allowed us to understand the actual mechanisms involved in how evolution works, the theory of evolution was not technically proven. There were many supporting lines of evidence that greatly increased the probability that the theory was correct, but there was little in the way of direct proof that could demonstrate the actual mechanisms involved until genetics became understood (the closest direct proof was Mendeleev’s experiments; but since it applied only to seed types, it was unknown how it applied to other organisms). In the case of UAPs, the sheer volume of evidence requires that we take the subject seriously and seek additional evidence so that we can technically prove it’s existence. We can’t obtain the evidence that will prove the existence is such craft until we actually look for it and take the subject seriously. It’s impossible to find what isn’t looked for in the first place. And if we are intentionally being denied such evidence, then we have to consider indirect evidence until such time that direct evidence (constituting proof) is available. The sheer number of pilots, military personnel, police, scientists, etc. reporting witnessing craft that cannot be explained by any known conventional technology is staggering. The Japanese pilots who saw a craft the size of a small stadium in Alaska and which was correlated on radar. The many ICBM base personnel who witnessed craft at their launch sites while the missiles stopped functioning. The trucker, four police officers, and a teacher who tracked a huge triangular craft across the Midwest in successive sightings. The man who filmed a test ICBM launch for the military who stated the film showed a UFO disabling the missile in mid air. The Rendlesham Forest incident in which a craft was approached on the ground the first night, and another craft/s was seen on the second night flying through a forest and then over a field by Colonel Halt and his team while the craft sent beams of light to the ground. The film recorded by the team that Gordon Cooper was overseeing that showed a disc shaped craft land not far from the film crew. The witnessed events just go on and on. It would be one thing if people were only seeing mysterious lights in the sky from a distance, but large numbers of credible witnesses have reported seeing structured, metallic craft performing maneuvers that cannot be explained by known physics; often from fairly close distance too. It’s very difficult to ignore the mass of evidence that has accumulated over the decades. I have to ask myself: what if there is an alien civilization that has decided we’re a threat and has decided to invade us. We would be extremely remiss to ignore the evidence just because it didn’t fit our preconceptions. Note: I could go further into the probabilistic nature of scientific inquiry, but that would require an entire paper to explain. Suffice it to say, since there’s no such thing as absolute knowledge, no privileged epistemological viewpoint from which to determine the absolute correctness of any idea or hypothesis, all determinations of whether a given hypothesis in correct can be assigned a statistical value, a confidence interval if you will, that determines how well the evidence contributes towards proof. When a given hypothesis includes a crucial test, it can be said that it has a high statistical probability of being correct (that it always below 100%). If the evidence includes multiple converging lines of evidence AND a crucial test, that probability goes even higher (much closer to, but never meeting, 100%). But in lieu of a crucial test, when only multiple converging lines of evidence exist, the probability is lower (such as evolution prior to genetics being discovered), but still enough to consider a given hypothesis being correct a somewhat high likelihood. So science is often not a simple determinative process in which something is either proven or not proven; and that’s, as I noted, in a normal scientific inquiry. As stated, when evaluating a phenomenon that possibly has intelligence and intention behind it, these determinations become far more complicated and require considerations beyond normal the methodological constraints used in science. We can’t ignore evidence just because that evidence doesn’t technically prove the existence of the phenomenon due to the specific nature of the phenomenon.

(I live in Portland, Oregon now and I'm still amazed every time I see Mount Hood in the distance. ) At any rate, I'm headed to work and admiring the mountain peaks and I see a platinum colored disc hovering above one of the peaks. I pulled my car over to the side of the road, got out and looked at it. There was no exhaust coming from this metallic disc. I could see that it was solid because the sun glinted off of it. I looked at the traffic coming towards me and was pointing my hand up to the sky to motion for people to look but no one seemed to be interested in stopping or looking. Eventually I realized I would be late for work if I didn't get in my car and continue. It was 2008 and all I had was a crappy flip phone so there was no point in trying to take a picture. The craft didn't disappear. It just hovered above the peak. I remember telling a woman at work who I had some camaraderie with and who I trusted not to think that I was a total whack job about the experience and she just smiled and said: "Yeah, Black Mountain has been known to have several sightings. I wouldn't doubt that it was a craft". Black Mountain is fairly close to Maggie Valley... maybe a 30 minute drive? However, I do feel that the point he made at 3:00 in the video is both trite and disingenuous. Have you ever tried to take a picture of the moon with your smartphone? I have. You see a beautiful, full harvest moon, so you take a shot of it, and what you get is a blurry little dot. The lenses in most smartphones are too wide-angle to get even a good picture of something as big as the moon. RU-vid is full of UFO/UAP videos, but what do they look like? Blurry little dots.
