I have noticed when you are talking about litter and nesting materials you do not stress the need for using different materials. I have had chickens off and on for over 40 years. Now, I did not come up with on my own, but my Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles shared their experience with me. If you are using shavings for instance in the run, the reason you do not want it in the nest boxes, is that it confuses the girls. They do not see the difference as to the place, just the material. Therefore you will have a higher instance of eggs on the floor. This also is most important if you are free ranging your birds. Part of the reason for lower egg count when free ranging is the availability of the grass that they are browsing in, so they lay their eggs in that. At least this has been our experience. We use golden comets, a sex link because of their egg count, 280 to 320 plus per year. They are an extra large to jumbo brown egg. Because they lay so many eggs you need to keep oyster shell for calcium and cherry stone for grit, even if you are free ranging. For cleaning poly carbonate or plexiglass, SO NOT USE WINDEX OR ANY OTHER GLASS CLEANER WITH AMMONIA OR AMMONIA D. It will cloud the plastic and make it look foggy. Ammonia sort of melts the plastic to give it that look. We use vinegar and water for cleaning all windows. Works good for all types of stain removal too. I enjoy your videos greatly for info not only for the coops, but on birds too. You see even at 68 yrs old, I still keep learning from and sharing with others. I use pine shavings under the straw because it helps absorb any moisture and if a chook breaks an egg in the nesting box, it also helps to minimise the mess. Pine shavings are also great for reducing the awful smell, and are great for making compost when you clean out the coop.

I am new to raising Chickens, learning all I can before making the leap. My wife, and I are looking for our forever home in the country, with several acres of land. We plan to build a coop. with attached run. and I think if at all possible we will be getting one of the American Coops in 6 foot by 18 foot. I want to let you know the new rear coop doors are an awesome idea. Windows to let in day light, and they open from the bottom, swing up to allow airflow, and rain protection, plus you don't have to look for a place to store the removable door panels. I think your Chicken Coops, and Runs are the best kit out there for those of us looking for a quality Chicken forever home.

Another fine coop down south. She will love it, so will her chickens. I would love to see another coop with the storage below the egg hutch. It is such a super idea for keeping their feed right on hand. Keep on showing these wonderful functional coops. We are WATCHING!

I love that you guys plan for deep litter! I just wish there was an additional covered area to hold the continuous feeder and water outside of the coop so it doesn’t take up floor space (and by having it in an alcove it keeps them cleaner)

It's good that you accommodate silkies and bantams. It would be interesting to see a video of her coop with the silkies in it when they are mature and living in it.

my father raised chickens all his life and he always put pine shavings and pine needles in his coop he said it keeps the mites down on the chickens, he would also put a dirt pool in his coop for the chickens to dust in and always put diatomaceous earth down to help with bug issues. DE will not harm the chickens/ also would put a little organic vinegar in their water every once in a while if they look like they were stressed. my father always had very healthy chickens and very good layers also. coops always neat and clean.

We use lemon pledge on aircraft windscreens and canopies, prevents scratching. Spray on first, work it around with your fingers to break up dirt and bugs, then use a rag to wipe off. Never use a dry rag on a dry surface or with visible dirt present. All that being said, I have no idea how well lemon pledge would interact with a chicken coop and chickens. But that is the best solution we've found for polycarb and plexi. Great coop designs!

The coop looks great. Very good job on construction and design. One change I would recommend. For the roof on the egg hutch, I would add a protective edging to the steel roofing. That edge can be sharp. Even in your video you show how the kids open the door and look in there. Even in the video, the kids' heads are inches from that potentially sharp edge.

I’m just finishing up building the same exact coop as this one. I’m currently doing the finishing touches. Is there a standard measurement for the 2 roost bars in the hen house? How far apart should they be and how far from the walls in the front and back of the hen house? I love your videos and have learned so much through watching all of them. Thanks

Even with the drain that they had installed, during a heavy rain the water has got to splash all inside the floor of the pen and get into the food. They should install gutters at least in the area of the pen.

very nice build! Just a thought, maybe you could put some sort of flexible cover like a smooth peel n stick used in waterproofing over the hinged doors so debris doesn't get trapped there.

I love these doors, but I live in Ontario, Canada and the gaps that I see would causes drafts in the winter that would need to be eliminated. But I like the solid door over the polycarbonate window, just my preference.

Love you coops. I noticed on this coop... the side where the main doors to the hen house are. There's that little bit of space between the framing and the doors, both swinging doors and drop down door. That little space could cause drafts. But I've noticed in more recent videos on the inside of the hen house, there seems to be plywood over the framing that produces a slightly extended lip or edge, about an inch. So when you close the doors that lip blocks the cracks and thus blocks drafts. Is this a change/upgrade you've made over time?

Finally! A gorgeous coop I can afford! I really wanted a coop from you guys, having been watching all your videos for awhile, have visited your site but its so comprehensive it was a little difficult to figure out which coop was the right coop for me and affordable. So the videos definitely help!. I will definitely need to hire y'all for the installation. 1 question is it better to set it on flat earth ground or to set it on bricks or concrete foundation and put soil down? Looks like an awesome coop!! I would use construction grade washed sand as litter and clean daily with a cat litter box scooper. Easy Peasy!

What size are the dowels and are there multiple levels for holding the doors w/Polycarbonate open or is there just one hole at the top and a hidden hole inside when they are closed?

At about 22:26, Matt says you could double your flock in that coop very easily, but then gets distracted and never says how. Lol. How would that be done? I love the American coop but I have a strong feeling I’ll have more than 12 birds eventually. :-)

That's not a chicken coop. That's a house renovation add on.

Are the hardware cloth screwed on with screws and washers or are they stapled. Screws and washers are best to keep predators out and washed sand is better than composed material it is easier to clean. And sweet coop by the chicken chick is best for the droppings boards if you have that too.

I'm In Central Florida, how do your coops stand up to Hurricanes, flooding and constant humidity along with our heat? Wood rots fast here. We have mold galore. Would the coops last a while here?

what we do here in France for our chicken coops is that we put the coop on top of a very large piece of apron and pvc "net", and that is of course also put outside of the coop for snakes and all kind of pests that are also abundant over here!!! And what do you do with the open spaces that are created because of the canals on the tin roof? Because snakes, rats, mice and so many other pests can crawl through these "holes".

How come you don’t have just a drop down piece to hold the windows up. Looks like it would be easy to lose those little dowels

Just learned from another site, that chickens don't like poles for roosting. THey prefer flat. wide planks, to walk on, lean on. That chicken coop looks too small. How did it turn out?

Hi - I have a question about the snake guard. Is it necessary to do the 2"x3" predator apron first and the PVC coated black hardware cloth over it or would the hardware cloth by itself serve the purpose of a predator apron AND a snake guard?

People think chickens are like humans? Ok, in that case , who’d want a doorway without an awning or overhang to keep you dry. Rain pours on nesting boxes. Step ladder or inclined ramp , which would you want to walk down first thing in the morning?

I thought the deep litter method was probably a good thing, I come to find out it doesnt compost in the coop due to needing moisture, but also, do you really want your chickens pecking and scratching in their own poop? I mean would you want to walk and scartch in your own poop even tho it is dry? moisture in the coop is bad. I clean my coop out everyday. I dont use bedding I use kitty litter on the boards and a little bit of pine shavings on the floor, most of the poop is on the board and a little on the floor so I keep it clean.

If I want this coop, with all of the choices she made, how much would this coop be? I’m trying to convince my husband that this is the coop I need!
