Russell Sharp Train Videos It’s the evening of June 9, 2023, looking out the front of South Shore Line train number 23, from departure at South Bend Airport westward.
After the sad 1963 demise of the North shore line it's great to that the South Shore is still rolling along. This interurban has a bright future. I love the South Shore and has ridden it many times.its 2023 and we still have this unique rail line is great.
I still remember when the Big Orange cars went all the way to downtown South Bend. Back when I lived in South Bend, that airport was known as St. Joseph County Airport.
@@russellsharptrainvideos My one and only trip on the South Shore was to Chicago and back on April 1 and 2, 1967, two weeks before we left South Bend for New Jersey.
After the sad demise of the North shore line it's great to see this interurban still having a successful future 60 years later. I love the South Shore line. May it roll many years from now.
Iam curious. Are there any photographs of the South Shore Line running through the streets of East Chicago, Indiana, pre Indiana Toll Roads days. I seem to remember wooden trestles crossing the Grand Calumet River as a child.
@@russellsharptrainvideos I agree! At least it's a one seat ride between South Bend and the Union Station. Also you might be able to go to the Cafe Car and get a snack while enroute.
If they are gonna relocate the station, why not double-track the rest of the line and replace catenary supports at the same time? Also adding a new station in Ardmore and doing Transit-Oriented Development around it would be cool. Also do a tunnel in order to not have to destroy houses around the line. Also making a new bus loop there with dedicated ”South Shore Line Connection” buses to important destinations in South Bend and Mishawka. And while working on it, add a South Shore Line Connection bus to Chesterton and Valparaiso from Dune Park as well.
In 1970 they moved the downtown so.bend station to Washington St. Did not have to take that long ride from airport to get to bendix dr. Took first ride back in 1954 when I was 5.
The first time I rode it was 1982, I was not going to Down Town or the Air Port! It stopped where Amtrak stopped. The taxi driver said not a good part of town!
That's because Indiana owns it. Indiana is a very anti-rail state, and barely wants to fund it. That's also why the governor cancelled Amtrak's Hoosier State.
When I worked in Chicago several co-workers took the Amtrak to and from Valparaiso, about 65 miles to the southeast. Because Amtrak didn't own the tracks its trains got shuttled onto sidings because freight trains of the host lines had right of way. Sometimes it took them 3 hours to get home and be an hour late in the morning getting to work. They all drove to the South Shore Line 13 miles to the north to have normal commute times. @@stereoplayers
Russ, that track leads to the former South shore Line (Now Amtrak) station on Bendix Drive. It is used occasionally by South Shore freights. I do not think it connects to NS?
@@russellsharptrainvideos I think it's urgent with traffic starting to pick up east of Michigan City IN to the South Bend International Airport. The President of the line should be told and take this into consideration.
@@russellsharptrainvideos The President of this line needs to really seriously consider double tracking east of Michigan City IN to the South Bend International Airport.
@@russellsharptrainvideos I'd sure hope they double track the remainder of the line to the South Bend International Airport. I'd also like to see the line get back to Downtown South Bend and also keep the stop at South Bend International Airport.
Eventually they'll have to double track from Michigan City to the South Bend International Airport. There's room for another second track. Why not finish the job!!???
It is not Norfolk Southern! It is Norfolk And Western! Are They the tracks Amtrak uses from Chicago to New Dork? All of the video was single track! So what is the big stink about Michigan City having single track?
There are plans to relocate the tracks to the western edge of the airport, avoiding the slow circuitous route and saving about 10 minutes. I saw somewhere that construction could begin as early as the end of this year
