See Through Glass Head on Briggs and Stratton Internal Combustion Engine in Slow Motion and 4K Slow Motion. you can see just how and engine really works and the internal engine combustion process when we use our Phantom to film inside the engine in High Speed .
We made a glass head for a Briggs and Stratton engine to make the combustion process visible.

Can you imagine when they first developed the internal combustion engine what an insane idea that must have been to pitch. "So yea, we're gonna have this thing we're building do about 900 controlled explosions a minute. Hmm, what? Well if the seal doesn't hold then the whole thing catches on fire."

People take for granted internal combustion engines. Not me. I've been in awe of them for 45 years and still am. They are one of the most incredible, almost magical inventions ever devised. That you can harness and control explosions and channel that energy to propel vehicles is amazing. The force of the combustion just to drive the piston down the cylinder is amazing enough but then when you think there still has to be enough residual energy for the piston to turn a crankshaft, which in turn turns the driveshaft, which in turn still has enough force to turn the vehicle wheels propelling a vehicle just boggles the imagination. Then add on top of all this the durability and reliability of internal combustion engines, especially considering they hold together under such stress from the non-stop controlled explosions and you have for me a head-shaking miracle.

I'm a small engine mechanic and never in my 6 years of working on these have I or has any mechanic actually gotten to see what he's really fixing and what's really going on in those chambers until now. This is amazing. If only this where possible in any engine to see whats going on in there then we mechanics know fixing engines would become obsolete. We could know if an engine is running lean or rich.

The rubbing alcohol has a high water content, that is what you see collecting in the combustion chamber
@dragondaze
@dragondaze 7 лет назад
It was because he just poured the alcohol into the carb and it was not being metered by the jet!
@MrPotatoPro
@MrPotatoPro 7 лет назад
No, it's only 9% water. The amount of Rubbing alcohol used would not leave enough water behind to fill the chamber. As dragondaze said, It was alcohol without a controlled injection, notice the rate at which it was entering the cylinder, filling it well before combustion.
@Weissenschenkel
@Weissenschenkel 7 лет назад
Also ethanol works better if the intake has rough walls -- gasoline works better with polished ones. HTH
@SWREngineering
@SWREngineering 7 лет назад
Neither likes a polished intake.
@dolebiscuit
@dolebiscuit 7 лет назад
No, it was collecting because the ignition timing wasn't tuned for alcohol, which is the coolest part of the video in my opinion. You can see the piston moving noticeably faster with the alcohol, and eventually the ignition timing gets desynchronized with the piston. This, combined with too rich of an air-fuel mixture is why the engine was flooded (though it still continued to run, another impressive feat). Essentially this video demonstrates why tuning and sometimes part swaps must be done in order to switch a gasoline engine to ethanol, but also demonstrates the performance gains from doing so.

That was GREAT! Cool watching the flame front travel. The alcohol would need to be run through the gas tank so carb CAN deliver it through its circuits to atomize it. It looked very flooded with too much when it was poured directly in. However bigger jets may be needed to run on alcohol. Excellent!

Try a similar idea with gear boxes while running and changing gears. The smaller gear boxes from motorbikes would be easier because the have a side panel you can replace for a nice view. i would love to see the clutch on a sequential gearbox. Also somehow maybe you can modify a car transmission to see inside while its running (maybe modify a section of the shell/cut out and repaced with clear plastic) you may need to try with and without oil for different results.

Clutch on a motorcycle is boring to look at a bunch of plates inside a cage even fully exposed you wouldn't see much and a gear box isn't much better a spinning shaft shifting left and right slightly as gears are changed

nice vid. I really liked the spirit of your statement - "I know the equipment we is us outta the reach of most of us, but the ideas are not, so give us any ideas you want to see come to life" ... ... that is totally AWESOME! it's not hard to stumble upon an interesting idea, but having all the tools to see what would happen is near impossible a lot of the time. people with the tools have better things to be doing with them usually lol. this is a great way to encourage creative thinking beyond ones means, where many good ideas die. thanks
@WarpedPerception

Agreed, thats just what we are about. a lot of time kids and adults alike see something and wonder " I wish i could see how that works, but it happens so fast ". its almost never the case that " I know someone with a high speed camera that will film that for me so i can fulfill my curiosity " , we are trying to make that more of a reality. glad you like it and thanks for watching !

I think the reason the alcohol burned that way because it was only 91 percent so you still had 9 percent water in your fuel.Super cool seeing the inside of the engine.Thanks for all your work.Looks like you may have a little genius on your hands too :) She's lucky she's got such a cool dad.
