This deserves way more views. It’s actually something I’ve never seen before.

Cool project. I did a school project on home made water rockets about 33 years ago. They withstood 300 psi, which was as much pressure as I could put into them using a car foot pump. I never had one explode. They used the old '80's bottle design which had a hemispherical bottom with a separate black part glued on so they'd stand up. I removed it and replaced it with a cone. I couldn't find a way to hold the fins on reliably. 3d printed fins screwed onto the cap threads makes me want to have another go!

Fan-freekin-tastic Chris!!! Great idea the way you separated and released the water, and I LOVE the super slow-mo 👍👍 I have a disabled veteran friend that was with the Big Red One in Vietnam. They were the first to go in, clearing pathways for the infantry and supply lines and that including blowing $hit up. He still loves explosions (legal fireworks 😉) so I'm going to get some sodium to show him how cool/HOT it is 😁

Very cool. If you want to get more height, you could make the throat of the nozzle smaller. This will increase the velocity of the water.

We used to launch an upsidedown metal 5 gallon bucket with a small hole in the bottom of it from a wet mud hole with carbide rocks and a long limb with a burning rag on the end of it! That thing would get 2 to 3 hundred feet of altitude depending on how deep you stuck it into the mud.

I thought the increase of water in the bottle in the rocket would increase the height of the flight. But seeing it explode due to over pressure was cool too!

Maybe if you put some kind of cone topper on the rockets they might fly even higher

Should ensure that the sodium stays within the confines of the bottle. I guarantee some of it is getting expelled on initial reaction. May want to place a mesh filter between the fuel (water/Na) and the exhaust port to ensure you're maintaining your Na in the vessel.

Maybe less sodium to get less pressure (to not explode the bottle) and more water (to get more materials to output from the bottle during a longer time). ? That could do a higher fly! Just a think. Cheers from France!

How about trying it with hydrogen peroxide, which already has oxygen ready to react with the sodium? It’ll be more reactive, as would using hydrochloride acid.
