See, this right here hits the nail on the head. Society has somehow gotten twisted into this absolutely asinine belief that one loses all credibility if they make a mistake or are proven wrong about something (never mind the _staggering_ preponderance of examples to the contrary). Science does, has, and (gods, I hope) always will continue to EMBRACE being wrong. Because in order to BE wrong, it means someone ELSE got it RIGHT! A fundamental tenant of scientific method is, when proven incorrect, we REEVALUATE OUR POSITION! This current culture of sheer terror of being proven incorrect - being LIABLE for making the best decision or coming the best conclusion with the information available at the time is NOT going to encourage all the perfect, infallible people who have apparently been in hiding this whole time to come forward, seize the tiller, and lead humanity to salvation! It will breed a generation of the species too scared to speak up and do the things that need to be done, whether it offends someone, or they get later proven to be wrong about _A_ fact (they themselves received, it having been presented as gospel), or find themselves sued into oblivion, or "cancelled" by slathering moron in the Woke High Command! Can you imagine if Churchill had been too afraid of being labeled "anti-German" or "nazi-phobic" to do his part in WWII? Albeit: a temper-tantrum-throwing Hitler with his panties in a bunch screaming about "axis-shaming" DOES make for a pretty vivid mental image (quick shoutout to the social justice warriors out there still looking for a mascot: don't worry. You can say you're using it ironically. We'll totally get what you meant).

When it comes to climate change the biggest obstacle to carbon free energy is the left's opposition to nuclear. Many liberals pride themselves on their scientific literacy and critical thinking skills. Yet they don't notice Neil's misinformation. The man works hard to make his material entertaining but doesn't bother to check it for accuracy. He is a source of bad math, wrong physics and false history. Don't sprain your arm patting yourself on the back for your critical thinking skills.
@charliebrandt2263
@charliebrandt2263 2 года назад
@@HopDavid You are right in part..Nuclear is a big part of the answer, However when scientists were realising the potential, Thorium, a hugely safer option was rejected for Uranium, as the use allowed the production of more Nuclear weapons (as Nuclear weapons we now have could destroy the earth a hundred times over!) With what we face Nuclear is a real threat because if electricity fails from social breakdown and the temperature of the core rises. Boom, and the world has many reactors (Around 50 in France alone!)
@HopDavid
@HopDavid 2 года назад
@@charliebrandt2263 I'm a huge fan of Sorensen and his molten salt reactors. Indeed there are nuclear designs that reduce radioactive waste. The waste from thorium reactors has a lot of close isotopes to fissionables used in weapons. So it's a lot harder to extract weapons grade fissionable. So the design mitigates proliferation problems as well. China is putting lots of R&D into thorium reactors. But not us. And there are safer designs for uranium reactors as well. Many modern reactors are moderated with water. If the chain reaction goes out of control and the water gets hot, it evaporates. And thus the chain reaction ends. Chernobyl was moderated with graphite.

@@andrewmcallister8312 the thing about conflicting information is that it's still the experts that are most suitable to review that information and how it was gathered. We get "alternate" facts when peopl hold up an extreme minority view and call it supressed information when it's really just an outlier that doesn't even necessarily have any merrit. Science is elitist in that it is a mereitocracy. What an expert in a subject thinks really does weigh heavier than what a scientist in another field thinks. All this said, with the alternative facts as Trump used it wasn't even a question of facts but rather his and his supporters not wanting to believe the only facts on the table so they made up their own, just to keep ignoring those same facts on the table. The issue of science being skewed by financial interests is not as big an issue as you might think. Sure financing is a decider for what research gets done but any bias is always accounted for and there are plenty of government run universities and foundations that fund basicly whatever research you want to do. I had long discussions about the subject with climate researchers at uni and I had to begrudgingly agree in the end.

Who’s the, “We,” that knows anything with that level of certainty though? Neil DeGrass Tyson, who also said, “as scientists who work in labs.” Vetting complete. Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering recipient, Bill Nye “the science guy,” has no more education or insight into geological science, psychology, or biology than many of you, but either believes, like you, like fundamentalist Christians believe their doctrines, because they’ve been told by a person presented as authoritative, like a priest/pastor, like a news anchor, a handful of shill scientists, doctors, and ‘science guys,’ who hold similar degrees to my own. This is a tactic, like using big words is, repetition alone is the most effective tool they have, but the one that gets me is a marketing gem they hook you with. If they tell their target audience that they are superior in edu and/or intellect to the “lesser” others (in this case it’s presented as hillbilly MAGAtards), your ego will easily buy into it. Say that there’s a Govt agency or politician who’s lies or corruption start to come to light. They plant an agent who is playing the role of the hillbilly magatard that they’ve made you think exist en mass rather than the reality of a few cringy fringe idiots, and they will have him bring up that controversy, only it will be presented as the most crazy and ridiculous stretch of a wild theory and bonus if they can add the Sky Daddy God element into it, and it’s effective in making people think that they know what we believe, they already heard it from hillbilly MAGA and had a good hearty chuckle w Rachel Maddow that also served as a soothing ego rub. There’s always a few boomers who come in w their grifts and their religious dogma once they see energy gaining somewhere. The left has their fair share of embarrassments too, but we aren’t projecting an overlay of that fringe element onto you all and then judging your entire party based on that. This is a well oiled influence machine that succeeds in feeding you every fallacious reason to dismiss a person’s opposing idea (source, education, appeal to authority, appeal to majority, dismiss the straw man (hillbilly MAGA) argument, dismiss it over its source). The point is, you have a million ready made reasons (excuses) to condescendingly dismiss an idea without ever actually listening to or engaging with the actual idea in good faith of debating with intellectual honesty. If they can’t get you to avoid discussion altogether, they know that they’ll lose you to the other side, it happens a lot. Climate change, for instance, is earth’s status quo. We have grand solar maximums and minimums depending on the earths wobble and magnetic north. Periodically, the earth’s poles flip, and this can cause serious immediate changes and also long term climate shifts like Antarctica going from tropical to a frozen tundra, oceans become deserts, sea levels rise and fall, making islands out of the tops of mountains and volcanos once large land masses (South Pacific islands/ Hawaii, Egypt’s fertile lands to dry remnants.) This will always happen, people will always migrate when it does, therefore, no one ever has or ever will keep a land forever, even if it was all agreed apon. They (scientists) first said the earth would cool, then heat up, their predictions got so Butt blasted for being si wrong for like 20 years that they started calling it climate change, then they aren’t wrong when the climate changes, one way or another. Some scientists, who you won’t see on TV bc they are actually researching the data, say that if we are the cause of these changes, then it’s too late to change it no matter what we do. Others, think as I do, that it’s the height of hubris to think we could have that much effect on the earth. It’s an organism, we are not parasites we are a part of the system or else we wouldn’t be here. If we were harming the earth in any significant way, the earth would send its version of white blood cells out to take care of the problem, maybe like a person with lice shaves their head and let’s the hair grow back minus the lice. I don’t know for sure, but neither do they, and many will say what they are told to say bc they won’t be a big shot on tv if they decided to change their opinions. The entire system is rotten and it needs to be rebooted altogether

I think one of the funniest things I have seen in a while is around the end of January (two months after the movie came out) the Wall Street Journal opinion page realized Don't Look Up was about climate change and then decided to hate it. Before that they had thought it was about general science denialism (not sure how the metaphor works in that case, not to mention they are the ones who deny all the other science stuff). Actually, they didn't figure anything out, they saw an interview with Adam McCay where he said that is what it was about. If anyone wants to see it for themselves, it's the opinion piece "Don't Look at Don't Look Up". It's conservative stupidity in it's most pure form.

Scholars, sages, philosophers, probably turn in their graves if they could hear. See the movie and you will be bombarded with so much of today's belief systems that you may want to stop the madness and bury our heads. Brave it out and try to let it all sink in. It took them literally more than a year to realise that the US wasn't requiring quarantine or any significant measures when compared to Western Pacific WHO region. They also failed to recognize that Americans will fight anything, it happened way back with HIV. Even after men with guns stormed the Michigan State Capitol building it was seen as , it's just a handful of radicals. Evidence can be right in front of you but biases and hubris mean you can't see it and I am talking about highly qualified people who in a different environment would perform far better. Or another way of putting it the US's covid 19 response had systemic failures, so far you actually only got one thing right and completed and that is the supply of vaccines but you still can't get enough people vaccinated and now have the worst death toll of any wealthy country on a per Capita basis. I agree...except...it hasn't just been the 'past five years'. This sort of thing has been a present for nearly (if not all) of 'human history'. So far, we have been collectively intelligent enough to overcome it, marginalize the doubters, and continue to move forward. The problem is that it has accelerated and faced with the next set of obstacles to overcome it is now entirely plausible that WE (as a species) ultimately fail. The only 'bright spot' is that life has , and always will, 'find a way'......so even if our fate is to be left to fossil records and future archaeological digs, life itself will persevere.

It has been this singular act that has really served to create these self-serving loudmouth talk radio personalities and their echo chambers that have divided the country and continue to disseminate lies and promote chaos with the goal of causing the people of America to lose faith in our democracy and our institutions, including the media, that prop up that democracy.

The point seems to be its own rebuttal as you have to believe what he says about what belief is in order to agree with him. I think belief is and must be applied to every step of development no matter what the developmental area is in question. When we learn a new scientifically sound fact, our belief in the result; in the objective truth of what we see is still required in order for the finding to be publicly viable. I think there are other..more sociologically based reasons for the denial of objective truth and that is what is exploited in life and in this film.

There is nothing "experimental" about it when hundreds of millions have taken it with extremely rare and minimal causal-linked adverse side effects. The most recent version allows for continued existence of existing nuclear power plants. But if it includes building new ones, I'm not aware of it. According to ABC News. Germany's decision to phase out nuclear power and shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy was first taken by the center left government of Gerhard Schroeder in 2002. Angela Merkel reversed her decision to extend the lifetime of Germany's nuclear plants and set 2022 as the final deadline for shutting them down. Angela Merkel was seen by many as the new standard bearer of liberal democracy since the election of Trump. And now Putin has Germany and much of Europe over a barrel. Europe remains addicted to Russia's natural gas and Biden as well as Europe are in a vulnerable position if Putin invades Ukraine. I'm happy to hear that you as well as other liberals are ranting for nuclear. Did Cortez and Biden get the memo? How about the greenies in Europe? I believe we need to do something about climate change. I'm all for solar panels on every roof. But trying to shift to a carbon free world with no nuclear is already becoming a disaster. A disaster that increases Putin's power and will likely get Trump re-elected.

“Don’t Look Up” is a landmark, hilarious, horrific, brilliant film for our time. But the one line in the film that really stuck with me more than anything is near the end. The main protagonists are sitting in a cabin as the fury of the comet’s impact starts to shake the house. And the astrophysicist DiCaprio quietly says (paraphrasing): “We really had it pretty good, didn’t we?” Yep, we did. Or rather, do. Meaning 21st century humans as a whole. And despite that, many, if not most, are constantly at each others’ throats, most of it based on greed and power and the backlash against it. If humankind can’t get its act together, our total and complete annihilation is assured. Just a matter of time. The sad thing is: it doesn’t have to be this way.
