Seed Collecting in Texas Sand Scrub & Bowel Movement Commentary

Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't

Another trip to the sandy soils of the geologic formation known as the South Texas Sandsheet, this time to collect Prunus texana seed.
We also scope a number of other cool plants like Berberis trifoliolata (Berberidaceae), Sisyrnchium (Iridaceae), Colubrina texensis (Rhamnaceae), Yucca constricta (Agavaceae), Aristolochia erecta, Thelesperma filifolium (Asteraceae), Physalis hederifolia (Solanaceae).
I might still have Prunus texana seed when this video airs. I would love for people to grow it, since the habitat could be destroyed in the coming years like all South Texas Habitat likely will be.
Regarding Prunus texana germination:
Remove the fruit and plant the seeds in a pot protected from rodents or birds and then just forget about them. Seeds will not germinate until weather cools down in fall or spring. There might be a way to speed up germination with warm moist stratification for a few weeks followed by cool stratification. Nobody knows cause nobody grows it. I sowed mine last April and they germinated in Fall, but I don't get freezing winters down here. Seedlings need absolute full sun when they germinate and won't live long in a pot, so get them in the ground asap.
Just remember they don't germinate during the summer. That would be evolutionarily disadvantageous. Sow them now and forget about them. They germinate in the fall when temps cool off.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds cliché but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...
Or consider becoming a patreon supporter @ :

Look at how beneficial them native thistles are holy shit, grow native thistles people. I'm growing them this year from seed that I had to get from this guy who I randomly met on iNaturalist (because unless you're really lucky, they're not even usually available in native seed shops -- not for my area anyway). I had really good luck soaking them for 8 hrs (like you would do for sunflower microgreens) and starting them on soil blocks on a heat mat in my kitchen under some shop lights. They probably won't transplant well but if I try to sow the seeds outside squirrels and shit always eat them immediately. Not sure if your Texan variety has dormancy, the species I'm working with does not.

Hey Now!! I've been growing Texas Thistle for 3 years now, and just finding out that they are 2 year plants-- they all grew and flowered the first year, came up and flowered the second year, but didn't come up the third year. The Texas Thistle is one of the BEST pollinator plants I've ever grown-- just every Swallowtail Butterfly and Bumblebee in the state came to them. I tried starting the seeds this spring, but nothing came up-- but the Cirsium horridulum that sprouted and grew last year but didn't flower that year is blooming this spring. You should check out this species, just amazing in size and number of flowers. I have ONE Texas Thistle coming up as a volunteer-- so they are NOT invasive like the Italian Thistle which is all over central California since last spring. Just awful--

@@kevinmccoy3653 Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Maybe if they get going enough/i.e. get a good start, good enough growing conditions maybe they will flower the first year? Or maybe they will flower the 1st year in harsher conditions, to get their genes out there more quickly. I am in the Pacific Northwest, so my species are all different -- I am growing Cirsium brevistylum from seed now; I tried Cirsium edule, from transplants -- they all died , between squirrels eating them and and I don't know what else -- I can't find anyone selling the seeds, I asked a company and they said that they're trying to offer them but that they've been having trouble getting a viable crop. I don't know if maybe they are subject to some kind of seed weevils or something -- I know that some shitty biocontrol was released to combat European thistles, but is damaging our native ones worse. I would like to try Cirsium occidentale, as a more drought tolerant option though not technically native to my county? Either way I am going to keep trying.

@@Hayley-sl9lm Heck, and I thought I was into native thistles! I tried looking for the 2 species you mentioned with no luck, but I will check my little known sources for what I can find and get back to you. I'm growing Cirsium nuttallii for the first time-- have 4 growing- I'll report here what I think. Also, my Cirsium horridulum didn't bloom last year, but were COVERED with Painted Lady larvae, while none of the others had any-- I think it was because the horridulum leaves have no hair....... I noticed the same thing with milkweeds- Monarchs go right to my Swamp Milkweeds, while usually avoiding the Common Milkweeds. Peace friend!

@@kevinmccoy3653 One thing I want to try is growing a couple all inside for year 1, on my shelf w/shop lights, but then harden it off in fall outside in a pot and only plant it into the ground when it's dormant as a bare root. I have lost way too many tap rooted transplants because they just die instantly at transplanting time (especially if I miss the window when they're small enough). I've had a lot better luck planting bareroot things.

Good luck germinating these Prunus pits! I never had any success with any Rosaceae, we have very few of them and all but one are rare and rather desirable. Even the common thorny shrub that's everywhere is fastidious, I once met a German student in tears over attempting to germinate Sarcopoterium spinosum for an Ecology experiment she needed for her degree at Tel Aviv U. I am, however, busily gloating over the much-delayed emergence of Capparis zoharyi seedlings after sowing this last October, a week into the war! These capers are good but collecting them without paying in blood is impossible!

Oh cool, I've seen some of these plants. A few years ago, I saw a couple Prunus Texana for sale at Rainbow Gardens in San Antonio. I didn't know they were rare from nurseries, and bought a couple Prunus Mexicana instead (which were then almost completely defoliated by deer, and I moved shortly after, so dunno if they're still there or alive). I've got a few Diospyros Texana and a Yucca (not sure what species, I think filamentosa or flaccida) that popped up in my current yard after neglecting my lawn. I ordered some Berberis Trifolia seeds from Etsy a while ago, and trying to germinate them.

maybe the divaricating branching on the thistle is meant to attract small rodents? idk what the native small mammals are in Texas, but it would make sense for a rabbit or mouse to be the primary source of seed distribution

Yucca treculeana is one of the yuccas with indehiscent seed pods, so they might not split open like those of y. elata.
