Baja California Fungus Jaunt

Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't

In this episode we explore the fungal community of the chaparral of Northern Baja California, as well as the mycorrhizal community dependent on Ornithostaphylos oppositifolia, a member of the blueberry family, Ericaceae.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds cliché but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...
Or consider becoming a patreon supporter @ :
/ crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt
Buy some CPBBD merch (shirts, hats, hoodies n' what the shit) available for sale at :
www.bonfire.com/store/crime-p...
To purchase stickers, venmo 15 bucks to "societyishell" and leave your address in the comments.
Plants ID questions or reading list suggestions can be sent to crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com
Thanks, GFY.

26:40 How freaking cool to have two experts on different taxonomies making banger videos. I love the interpretation of dense information from the two of you, it is reminiscence of Freeman Tildens "Interpretating our heritage". One of the best "walks through nature" about molds/spores/fungus type vlogs. Fungus is usually seen by most just about anywhere walking about a vicinity of trees under their canopy out in the forest and sometimes just out in the open where a tree may have been cut down along a road. Such diversity of one of the coolest thing in nature .

@erikjohnson9223
@erikjohnson9223 2 месяца назад
No. I have seen blue pollen before. Scilla siberica, and some poppies and Geranium's. Possibly yellow predominates because most pollen-eating pollinators have learned to expect that, so flowers use it as a kind of bait. (Founder effect.)

Ironically, as with seemingly everything else, Europeans see something and just assume it must automatically be their's. That ego is just never-ending. 😂 And if I hear one more story, about how scientists just assumed something to be a certain way WITHOUT TESTING it first, then I might go throw up. The entire point of scientific study, and why I love all the fields so much, is because you are supposed to have to test and prove your hypothesis with repeatable, consistent results. You are not supposed to just assume anything without checking it FIRST! You have no opinion without evidence first! That's real science. Nothing to do with trust, belief, or any moral whatever. If you are merely "assuming", then you are not a quality scientist. You should want to learn what really is more than you care about "proving a point you want to exist".
@emisformaker
@emisformaker 2 месяца назад
True, but most of the taxonomies written in books were made back when science tolerated much more instances of 'I reckon this is true, because I'm an educated man, and I wrote it in a book'.

When modern taxonomic botany & mycology started most of the scientists and naturalists were Europeans or of European descent, and the diagnostic tools available were very limited compared to what we have now. Further, Occam's Razor ruled -- if it appears that one name is sufficient, don't use two; and if two or more names have been given to what appears to be a single species, just use the first published with an "adequate" description. The extra names can be recycled once suitable evidence is garnered that the one name covers more than one biological species.

Funny, you grow Sedum in Canada and rarely see a flower, usually grown indoors. Today is April seventh, I saw the first flowers of the year ..they are usually not due another month or more. Yellow Sedum flowers, strange ..the one species that almost never flowers outdoors here, very few varietals of Sedum do. I am really not used to seeing them in flower ..PLUS, they are first.

Fostering a species, considered endangered in Mexico ..I found one here ..or our version, DNA sequencing will confirm or not. Major op bout to happen, harvesting Psilocybe neoxalapensis mycelial culture ..Quebec species, lil' purple and blue-skirted things. Subsequent generations, descendants of John Allen's Psilocybe allenii, growing till the second snowfall (last week of November in Quebec ..after cannabis harvest, now we have fungal foraging as well ..cannabis has to be harvested by second week of October). Anis flavoured Cantherellus (white anis Chanterelle) X Psilocybe allenii hybrids to put back ..gave 2 me, I give back. Square-capped fungi were bred with a large locally-foraged Pluteus species (DVD-sized parent specimen) ..now the Square cap X Pluteus "dikaryon" hybridisation, is being fertilised by a very red square-capped specimen. This SHOULD yield a BIGGER square-red ("square-head") cap fungal fruiting body. The pink and purple, heart-shaped Pink Pans are already in. I also have some blue "Lactarius indigo" to add to the scenery (same blue as the Quebec flag ..they paint shoes blue though ..water-soluble ..it's fine, not dye). Wood Lover's Paralysis SOLVED: Spruce Bud worms metabolise tryptamines into an unidentified compound that is toxic to the human central nervous system. One confirmation by chemical analyses, is all that remains. Have specimen in wood alcohol, Canadian resources still in hands of Muslim-eating war criminal majority.

I have decided to side-step Alan and go for the source of the problem, war criminal Stamets, that thwarted the development of fungal science by failing to ..at least pronounce the word Psilocybe. Now there are millions to correct, by sharing three easy syllables, SI-LOH-CIBE. I had to chase the bad guys by myself ..as usual, everyone watches the bully terrorise and destroy ..till the littlest person ends it.
