I been collecting pine cones and trying to get them to sprout.. the longleafs are notorious for extremely difficult to get to grow .. i tried hundreds of cones over months 1000s of seeds in multiple times ..techniques .nothing.. Then on hottest brightest day hot some cones off new trees knocked them off they had just naturally opened on tree.. took home and one fell on hot driveway at 4pm like degrees and i swear some how in 30 minutes of me moving stuff it sprouts!
That is true to most plants native to the tropical or subtropical climates. But if you try to grow those that are native to temperate and Mediterranean climates like Lavender, you need to stratify them and the mortality rate of the few seedlings that germinated is very high even for experienced gardeners.
I like to get the car up to about 110 mph in the rain, then hold the seeds out through the window. The wind and rain do a good job scarifying and soaking. I do it for about 20 minutes per seed. Then I bury the seeds in an old mine shaft in a National Park near me, 1.7 miles beneath the surface of the earth, with a vanilla scented candle next to them. I leave them for 32 months. Then I retrieve the seeds and plant them in my garden. I have achieved nearly 40% germination. It works people!
Hi, I'm a novice when it comes to gardening and I would like to learn how to germinate rose seeds that I got as a gift. I read some information on how to do this but I just want to make sure I'm doing it right! Do I just need to soak the seeds for 24 hours in hot (but not boiling) water or do I need to place it in the fridge with wet paper towels overnight?
For about 2 years now I have been grow silver maples I found already sprouted in my yard...so I wanted to grow others...so I bought cherry blossom seeds and others oriental tree seeds..I soaked 5 cherry blossom seeds for 24 hours, then put them in warm moist soil. (above my fireplace) about 4-5 weeks later only 1 out of the 5 sprouted....was I post to Scarification, Stratification them first??? they have a hard shell..
a lot of cones just need a sunny windowsill to open up and release the seeds, the seeds will usually still need stratification to mimic going through winter ready to burst into life when sown in a warm place
hi do you have any experience with bilberry seeds stratification, soaking and germination that you could share. ive been using wet paper towels in baggies but for ease of handling tiny seeds I am now considering them to stratify in plastic trays filled with fine peat moss. but once they are out from fridge, seeds quite often tend to develop white mold. for this reason I am thinking about vermiculite. also i am wondering when its best to soak the seeds (before or after stratification) if someone is using GA3 or Hydrogen Peroxide.
I just planted the seeds in a pot and put them in the freezer to germinate. Is it too late? I read it needs to be in there for 6 weeks and then be out at a cold temperature of 65 degrees for 2 months. They’re staying inside

Hello mam, what happens if we keep seeds in freezer? They wont germinate after we get them out after few weeks?? (I've kept 20 maple seeds in freezer, in moist cocopeat medium)
+GrowOrganic Peaceful Valley: For stratification of seeds in the refridgerator, can I put it in an air tight container so that I don't need to check for any loss of moisture? Does the seeds need to breathe during stratification?
I am wanting to plant Japanese cherry tree seeds and the instructions that came with the seed are asking "stratify warm 1-2months then cold stratify for 3-4 months" you explained the stratification process but what does "stratify warm" mean?? Thank you very much. Warm stratification is the same as cold stratification except the temperature is 68-86°F. So put it in the bag with the media like perlite or virmiculite and keep it room temperature for 1-2 months, and then put it in the fridge for 3-4 months. Just nothing weak and stereotypical, like freakin James Taylor type junk or neutral digital music. Something unexpected, not some "green" crap. But also not so unexpected it clashes and takes away from the video. No music at all might be an idea. Easy for me to preach. Much harder to find something good. Just my 2 cents. Do what you think is best, of course.
