Saving seeds from the plants in your garden can help you to continue to grow the plants you love year after year. They can also lead to new discoveries when you save seed from unstable varieties. Either way, it is a fun and economical garden activity.
I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 3b. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

I do know problems can result from Volunteers from hybrids and my summer garden time is important Last spring didn't have luck with our favorite salad tomatoes and didn't have time to reorder so I allow 2 volunteers to grow with pleasant restaurants my volunteer both came up where I'd raise My hybrid Midnight Snack.Midnight Snacks normally the biggest plant in my garden and I love that myself but I'd gifted my cousin a plant and it overwhelming in her small garden. My volunteers both tested much as the Midnight Snack but plant each were half the size also the tomato are 1 inch diameter as the Midnight Snack are little over sized but so delicious and productive we still love them. The vines normally are 10 ft x5 x5 ft so yes they are bigger than most.. Finally 6a Mid Ohio we got over 1 inch rain fall after 2 rainless months the driest summer for this old gardener I'm so lucky to catch about 350 gallons of rain water before the dry summer started . I saved 2 cups of sunflower seeds as I'm planting some as a cover crop for next season. Thanks for helping my 2024 season soon be mulching leaves

We had that severe drought in WI last year. We had way too much rain this summer and now a drought in September. Odd we did get a 6” downpour, but it’s a long stretch of dry weather again and finally cooler in the 70s next week, otherwise it’s been 20 degrees above normal.

When you say a variety is not stable, do you mean you have collected a seed from a hybrid and it has reverted to one of the parents? Seeds from arugula, mustard, kale, etc. are dead easy to collect. I hardly ever buy seeds for those, unless I want to try a new variety. I definitely collect seeds from my beans, some of which are heirloom and not generally available. I get a lot of satisfaction from growing food from collected seed!

Yes, when I am saying a seed is not stable, I mean it will not necessarily grow a plant with the same characteristics as the plant it was collected from. There are a lot of great seeds to be collected in the vegetable garden for sure!

@@PrairiePlantgirl2 years ago I let a rutabaga go to seed. They produced better, bigger roots than new seed this year which didn’t produce.

If you’re lucky the marigolds will reseed themselves. Lol, I have them everywhere. Neighbor asked why I planted all those flowers-I didn’t 😅.

I usually purchase seeds for anything I really care about and am not sure how the seedlings (of collected seed) will turn out.

😂I admire your restraint in seeding collecting. I never know when to stop. I grew stock for first time and noticed they must be a delicacy for some creature as they seemed to have disappeared as I was waiting for them to dry or they fell off maybe. I’ve noticed no seed on some flowers also. I wonder if those are bred to not have to deadhead. I was surprised there were no seeds on cup and saucer vine as it’s a large hull left behind. It’s ok as it wasn’t the best show.

Once a plant produces seed it thinks its life is over (hence the need for deadheading) this is a reason for breeders to develop plants that don’t produce seed.

Very impressive seed harvest from all of your plants. Have you had a frost yet?
