I went to a home & garden show today & the Master Gardeners Association had their booths set up & a lady was starting seeds in an eggshell. No need to disturb the roots when transplanting because the egg biodegrades & the roots can still get through.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 5 лет назад
Hmmm. The egg wont degrade that fast. But the roots will go up and around it eventually. Shell can stay intact for a long time but will give back over time. The shell is so shallow plants just root out from the top. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. Hey Joe, when you repot your peppers do you go up to the leaves too? I've only done that with tomatoes. I need to move some peppers this week, so thought I should ask! *grin*
@joesoutdoorplaces
@joesoutdoorplaces 5 лет назад
@@hummingbirdhillhomespun5421 I have repotted peppers a bit deeper, but never up to the leaves like I do tomatoes. I am sorry. I should have been more clear in my comment. I only meant up to the leaves with tomatoes.
@hummingbirdhillhomespun5421
@hummingbirdhillhomespun5421 5 лет назад
@@joesoutdoorplaces oh whew! I thought there was some magic trick I didn't know about. I've never grown peppers from seed before, so I'm a bit nervous about the outcomes. I'm also trying to decide if I need to pot my tomatoes up one more time inside before I move them outside. The local stores are selling tomatoes, and our last frost (anticipated) is April 1st. I'm half tempted to just harden off a few plants and then throw them into the beds and see what happens. Since I have 31 seedlings and only room for six plants, (nine if I am really serious about single stemming them) I have room to totally ruin a few, right? When do you pot yours outside? I'm zone 8B.
@joesoutdoorplaces
@joesoutdoorplaces 5 лет назад
@@hummingbirdhillhomespun5421 I only repot once before transplanting outdoors. It would have benefited my plants if I could have repotted again as I was a tad early planting seeds this season. I am in Louisiana zone 8b. I have my plants ready to go into the ground in the next few days. They will be in as soon as I have time to get them in. I didn't check the last frost date. I won't try to save plants by covering if we get a late frost. I have backups too.

I've found that small pepper plants are very easy to stress when transplanting. I always let them go one week extra in their original pot, even 2-3 is preferable to transplanting too soon.

I've tweezed tomato and pepper starts apart from the same cell when I ran out of seeds and my others didn't germinate or died. It works! Better have some set back a little than none at all. Last year I used reduced strength synthetic fertilizer. First feeding everything looked great, second feeding they went downhill. Not sure what happened. This year, I'll be using fish and kelp emulsion, a bit stinky, but, less likely to over feed.

You mentioned the purple tint on the tomato seedlings being normal, I have several super hot pepper seedlings that are turning a really dark purple on top of the leaves. Is that normal as well or do I have a problem? The varieties that are turning purple are peach reapers, chocolate reapers, apocalypse scorpions, Brazilian Moruga, Naga Viper, bleeding Borg 9, and 7 pot lava red. They were started in a 72 cell tray along with several other super hot varieties...This is my first time starting my own seeds, I usually just buy plants ready to go in the ground. This is all new to me, I just thought it was odd that all those different varieties all started to turn purple. Thanks in advance, love your videos!

Gary do you wait for liquid fertilizer until true leaves appear or start form the beginning of seed start?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 5 лет назад
You can do either. My current protocol is some worm castings in the seed starting mix when I plant the seeds. Liquid feed of some sort when the true leaves come. You just want to be low and slow and not over do it. You can wait longer for feeding if you start with it. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Would I still need to fertilize my tomato starts if I added some Vermisterra worm castings in my starting mix?
@michaelp6421
@michaelp6421 5 лет назад
I think so because organic fertilizers take time to break down and be available to the plants. That is part of the reason why it is difficult to burn or shock plants with organics. The salt/chemical/synthetic/whatever you may call them fertilizers are water soluble and readily available to the plants which is why their helpful in new sterile soil.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 5 лет назад
Castings have immediate value. The plants can go longer before a water soluble feed but I would still give them a low dose. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. I am getting ready to start my seeds indoors in North Georgia. My fertilizer is 3-4-4 would that be ok? Also, should I add some to the jiffy starting mix?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 5 лет назад
That ratio is fine. You can add some to the mix if you want. There are many ways to seed start. You arent over doing it with fertilizer so that is good. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. Ill be putting what I use in videos there for 2019. It is all set up by categories. I dont have grow lights..what should I do? Is a sunny spot on porch ok? Also..what kind of fertilizer should i buy?
@phillipBappleton
@phillipBappleton 5 лет назад
You really need either grow lights or a cold frame, unless your porch has about 8 hours of direct sunlight you're going to end up with leggy and weak seedlings.

You can move them in and out where you have sun during the day as long as it is not freezing. Just take them in at night. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Hi Gary, I have started all my seeds (tomato, pepper, pumpkin, basil) they have all broke the surface and look great. I have not transplanted or thinned them yet or placed them under any light. Is it ok to now put them under lights until they go outside in about 10 weeks? ( my lights took longer than expected to come in from Amazon)
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 5 лет назад
IF they are not too leggy you can do it. It is early though for pumpkin and basil. They are more for later and should be only grown indoors for like 3 or 4 weeks. The pumpkin will flower and and get to big and be more like a bonsai plant. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. water soluble fertilizers (the blue stuff) doesn't smell horrible like chicken manure-containing "organic" stuff so MUCH better to use indoors, where most of us have our early seedlings......

I dont mind a light blue water soluble feeding indoors. It really has everything the plants need while growing. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It is free to use. Just use my... The Rusted Garden link at www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden anytime you shop. I have garden items broken into categories.

Oh no...not just you! You should have seen me last year when I actually pruned my tomato plants for the first time! I only did two plants to start because I was sure I was murdering them. By the time I pulled off a few suckers and stuck them in the ground in July, I was ready to try single stemming...those two suckers grew to over eight feet tall...I'm ready to be more brutal this year, but I still have trouble thinning out my seedlings. *grin*
