Spring is nearing and today we are starting seeds in preparation of planting our Spring 2023 garden - both in ground and in containers.
For this video we cleaned and set up the green house to prepare for seed starts. With weather that hasn't quite decided which season we are in and cool fronts on the horizon - we opted to try out a Hoss Tools heat mat - coupled with some Hoss Tools signature seeds. Detailed in the video are items we used from seeds, to soil, to containers, and water.
We planted - tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeños, cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant, and squash.
Enjoy.

Hi, neighbor. East Lucedale area here. Just watched your video on using buckets. That was neat. I'm using our back porch, west facing, as a make do greenhouse until Eugene hooks up the power to the old porch room. Hurricane Zeta did a number on our outbuildings and we're slow to repair it all. Okay, at our age we're just plain slow. I'm more into herbs now and veggies I can use fresh. Charlie-s U-Pick is close enough to get most everything I want to can and dehydrate. I can't believe the pecan trees are already putting out leaves. Usually that means it is time to plant warm weather crops like corn. I want to have my real greenhouse going so I can have some crops that are not heat tolerant survive our summer.

Hello Lula. Thanks for watching and commenting. It’s definitely been some unique weather lately. Definitely see some pecan trees budding. But I’m still holding off before planting in ground. But I will be planting in containers soon. That’s the beauty of them. Can move them for protection. Happy Growing my friend.

I can’t wait to see a follow up on these sprouting. Coming to you from galveston Tx. We are getting our first chickens in the next few weeks. Going to try your wicking buckets and get us some vegetables started. How did you fare from the freeze? We were in a mass rush to protect the pipes and pets, I forgot to move my plants in and lost everything. No busted pipes though

Hello Dona, I did well for the freeze. Many of the plants in ground were lost but the ones in buckets were easily moved to cover for protection. For the seed starts, things were looking great, then something got in the green house and ate some of the newly grown sprouts. Sealed the building over again and put a camera out to see what exactly did the damage. Hopeful for the seeds that didn't sprout yet. Thanks for commenting and watching. Happy Growing and good luck on the upcoming spring garden. If you have any questions about chickens feel free. I grew up with and raised chickens for years on end and just recently got rid of mine in anticipation of a move that never happened. I'll be getting more sooner than later. Chickens are great.

I have been watching quite a few of your videos and appreciate how in depth you are going...I DEFINITELY learned a lot about the buckets and will be using your formula to healthy cabbage...I am wondering about the seeds for a person who cant do a big grow light...I bought a smaller one and I dont quite know how to hang it..I have tall walls..I am wondering what I can do or is there a link to one I can just put over a small bunch of seeds?

As long as the light shines above the seeds. It should work for less seeds. 16 inches is typically what I go with. They do make smaller table top lights with a stand. If you are doing them in the house. After you water them. Cover with clear plastic seran wrap for three days. To trap moisture in. And help them germinate. Hope that helps. Just started my seeds on sunday over in Jennings area. All but my lunchbox peppers were from Hoss. Just put down a silage tarp from them to start a 30 x 35 garden. If only this rain would let up....
@A.L.B.O.E.SouthernHomestead
I used Hoss for the first time last year. Don’t plan to ever look back. I really like the wide assortment they offer. Everything I’ve ordered has been up to par and just as described on their site. Definitely agree. This rain needs to let up. I’d like to see a few days or weeks of high 65 with some dry. Wishful thinking. Thanks for watching. And commenting.
