I'm from Texas and went to Going-Banana farm and the couple that owns it is wonderful! They took their time to explain the different varieties and gave excellent information on how to care for them. We bought about 25 plants from them and the plants made the trip back home in great shape (That's a 3 day drive). I have only had one die because some animal tried to eat it. All the rest are growing beautifully. I really want to go back and get more varieties.

Wow 1 hour! I made it! Thanks for sharing all that John. I think you found a lot of great information down in Florida. That vertical growing system really was interested, and the avocados that had been grafted on cold hardy root stock. I will be looking into both more soon.

Hi John. I'm a Florida native living in SW Florida and I found this episode to be very informative. I've already tried conventional vegetables in a raised bed garden, with mixed results. Now I'm trying some of the plants you recommended, such as bananas and a Moringa tree that I've been growing for not quite a year now. I just got some seeds for Malabar Spinach and New Zealand Spinach. Like you, I'm only interested in growing edibles for my consumption. I amend with Azomite as you recommend.

12:05 Ambarella is a great plant. You can eat the fruit unripe it tastes sour and refreshing. Great for smoothies/drinks. The leaves are edible too we usually cook soup out of them. Jackfruit leaves can also be used for goat feed and the fruit skin can be cooked and eaten after you peel the jagged green outer skin.

Here in St Pete I'm experimenting with SE Asian vegetables. My son (who's married to a Thai lady) asked me why I was trying to grow N. European veg when the best fruits and veg (and cuisine) in the world are tropical and there are so many more kinds of greens, beans, eggplants, etc from SE Asia. Looking forward to tiny round Thai eggplants plus wing and yardlong beans and more! Prolly don't need cold hardy anything in Miami tho... freezing temps only last for a few hrs (if ever) on S FL coasts.

Hey John, Keep cranking out the vids of knowledge on all things gardening. I've been a subscriber for awhile and can't remember if I thanked you for the seeds you sent, but I got news related to all things bananas. I live in Charlotte, NC and as of this week 10/21/13 I have bananas growing on my tree north of the tropic zone! I've had the tree for three years, tried to cut it down to expand the garden and viola, bananas this year in North Carolina!

Nicolas Ickovic well I am aware a lot of south florida is swamps and stuff, but technically, since miami is about 6 feet above sea level, wouldn't it be naturally higher ground? or was that under water too and people just added all that ;and to make it above sea level...I'm from New Orleans, so we are actually below sea level so Im wondering, if Miami was underwater, why are they not below sea level but we are? Also, if Miami beach is a manmade island and stuff, why does it have such beautiful water?
@nicolasickovic7432
@nicolasickovic7432 8 лет назад
+Mike Younis unfortunately miami's nuclear reactor is leaking radioactive isotopes into that beautiful water. sure we are technically above sea level but if you turn of all the pumps that are diverting water away from the landmass we would definitely be under water. florida's coastline constantly changes over time and native settlements were found submerged off the coast, so there is some degree of flexibility as the sea level changes over time

I have a giant jack ruit and can't wait till it's ripe. The tree was grown from seed. Banana's can be grown as suckers and ours never go yellow because we grow organic and the bugs get it too fast, so I use the green ones in stews and they can replace potatoe and you cant really tell the diff. b/c they're all starch. The tiny tomatoes are like weeds and are great if you are willing to pick them every other day wash them and freeze them in zip lock sandwich bags the ones 2 eat later.

Loved this video John. I have a small licensed nursery in Florida, and am already growing many of the plants you mentioned. The Eugenia that you talked about, cherry of the rio grande (E. aggregata), doesn't have an astringent taste at all. You've probably tried E. uniflora, which has a pine resin aftertaste (there is a rarer, black fruited varietal of E. uniflora that tastes much better). You'll like the cherry of the Rio Grande. You should try grumichama, (E. brasiliensis) too. Cheers!

Also if anyone has a problem with cats pooping in their raised beds get a glass bottle and fill it with water, then put the bottle standing up in the bed. I have no idea why it works, I know it sounds like a bunch of nonesense, but for some reason it really does work. I think plastic jugs or bottles will work too.

@rolazrei

Some of the plants you tried to grow in a greenhouse that failed, which were tropical, it's also possible that they didn't thrive because they require specific interactions with tropical soil microbes. You might try importing some native soil for such plants to grow in, even while they are in the right 'temperature'

Don't sell the low-chill peaches short. I have had two trees for several years in Southwest Florida I got from Echo in North Fort Myers, and they are extremely productive and delicious. Every year I have had a good crop. Plenty for my family. After colder winters, there has been so much fruit that the branches of the tree are literally drooping almost to the ground. Had to give a lot away.

It's hot in the mid continent during the summer. I wouldn't be so quick to say we can't grow heat crops. The problem is the short length of our growing season followed by -20 to -35 degree temperatures. The summers are hot, if we can find an annual we don't need to worry about it surviving the winter.

easiest way would to talk to a nursery and get suggestions. most seeds should be started in soil not water etc you may have bad seeds as well empty ones. basically each tree needs different circumstances to grow take white oak and red oak white oak sprouts as soon as it drops from the tree and red has to go through a cold period over the winter to germinate. just research how to germinate the specific tree you want to grow. or requirements for germinating specific seed especially for wild ones
