These light and fluffy seeds come from a very common tree known as the Quaking Aspen, and its seeds are known to germinate within 24 hours after dispersal if they land on moist soil. I decided to try out growing these trees from seed, and I had great results!! In 24 hours the seeds had germinated and had small shoots, and by the second day they all had leaves. This is very exciting, and I will make an update video on them when they are a month old to show the new changes then. Thanks for watching!!

Interesting. I have a mini forest of them behind & along the side of my garage. I'll try doing some by seed & root cutting this year.

definitely wanting to try making a quaking aspen bonsai forest so I am excited to see what happens with these. I love the educational, step-by-step instructions, it's hard to find that kind of detail and I'm just getting started so it's exactly what I need!

Have your starts survived? What happened next?? Aspens especially need new generations of seed reproduction to outrun the eminent mortality of the existing root stock. Great work on this video. We are trying to follow up. Aspens are essential in our high desert/alpine neighborhoods.

Fantastic! Thank you for this. I see you can get 1000 seeds for 14 bucks on the internet but a bare root sapling is 14 bucks… Imagine if you can grow 1000 of these for 14 bucks? That would be awesome. These are not common where I live in southern Illinois. I’ve never even seen one and I have seen many acres of woods here. I hope to plant a whole bunch of them as they are so glorious in the fall and they are a keystone species that can support much wildlife.

How can you tell these seeds apart from cottonwood seeds floating through the air as well? The seeds are so similar and cotton wood will germinate extremely fast as well (I had seedlings in my gutter) I've found some catkins on the ground, but I assume it was from a male tree cause they are on the ground and there are no seed pods. How well does quaking aspen cope as cuttings? might be my only choice since I can't seem to find a female aspen with catkins, and much less one with accessible catkins.

How long before you could take them out of the plastic bag? Is the bag just for germination?

Interactive Gardening Aspen are poplars fast growing short lived trees they typically live 70 -100 years sometimes 50 years they are poplars wood is used for pulp to make paper. You can grow Aspen also by root suckers that is how they typically grow in nature threw root system. Might want try growing cottonwood Aspens relative. You can grow cottonwood threw cuttings or seeds cottonwood can sometimes live longer than Aspen 70 -120 years sometimes 200 300 years.

How did the bonsai experiment go? That's exactly what I was thinking of trying, so I'm very curious to hear!

I got busy and got sloppy with my watering schedule last summer, those seedlings needed water every few hours and I accidentally let them die :/ But I'm going to be doing more bonsai videos soon though!

Hi loved your video and would like to grow some of your native aspen’s here in Wales (UK), any chance you could send me some seeds. Thanks

Sorry I wouldn't be able to, the seeds lose viability after a day. You can probably look into getting some live cuttings or saplings though online

Thanks for your reply. Bare root plants of populous tremuloides are very difficult to source in the UK. I did buy some seeds recently from the an American supplier who did not mention viability problems. (Im presuming these would have been from the fall of 2017)which have not germinated yet! But thanks again. T
