Rivka Shotkin, a 16-year-old teenager living in Passaic, NJ, is the youngest guest yet on the Meaningful People Podcast. As a result of a devastating skiing accident that severed her spinal cord, she is paralyzed from the chest down. In this episode, she vulnerably shares her story and the struggles through her journey that will leave you crying, smiling, and truly inspired.

Without exaggeration, that was probably the most inspirational interview I have heard in my lifetime. I am floored by such a young woman’s depth of character. Her wisdom and ability to not only accept, but appreciate life’s curveballs is wildly impressive. I love the way she articulates her emunah in such an unwavering but yet lighthearted way. Staying strong with various challenging experiences, such as overcoming addictions such a food or gaming? Childhood trauma? Staying inspired during rehabilitation and therapy for sexual abuse. Don't we all know people who can share their exceptional stories to inspire others?! Let's do this! Obviously Rivkas message is incredible. But something struck me that we as a community must consider. This beautiful neshama was happier as a quadriplegic than she was as a healthy girl who was made to feel “ less than” because of school rejection. I think our mosdos must hear this. How can it be that even this summer ( after all the work put in to try to avoid this) I am hearing about children who don’t yet have a school. Rivka is proof that the impact of this issue goes very very deep in the hearts of our children

When asked about her reaction to frightening situations she said that she laughs. When שרה אימנו was notified by the angels that she’d give birth at the age of 90 she began to laugh. She’s asked למה זה צחקה שרה? And is ultimately criticized for what seems to be a lack of faith. She replies: לא צחקתי כי יראה meaning I didn’t laugh, rather I was afraid to which the response comes: לא כי צחקת affirming, in fact that she did laugh. I’ve always thought to move the comma in the verse to read: לא, צחקתי כי יראה saying instead that she did laugh but not as an expression of questioning her ability to give birth but out of fear, anxiety and nervousness
