Brené is such a gift. So inspiring = “We all grew up… armored up… and at some point that armor no longer serves us. How is not talking about this serving you? And now the weight of the armor is too heavy. It’s not protecting you. It’s keeping you from being seen and known by others. This is THE developmental milestone of midlife. It’s not a crisis. It’s a slow, brutal unraveling... But you can replace the armor with something: curiosity."

Yep. Just now moving past a relationship where the other person has some serious armor, and clutching tightly to it at age 60. I'm sad, but I also learned I might need to do some lightening of the "heavy metal" myself...

the weak need armor; the armor is code for something outside of yourself, that you then place on yourself. once you admit your weakness and bankruptcy, you can turn your vulnerable skin into armor. who cares if 6 billion people hate your guys, call me fat, ugly, stupid - I don't care whatsoever. you cannot be seen and known by others and why would you need that? the weak need that - Eagles fly alone. Jesus was a way nicer person than me and didn't have millions of friends of Facebook.

I have attempted to meditate many times in my life and prior to this CD the only success I've experienced is with live guided meditation. ru-vid.comUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq This is the first CD I've used that cuts through my unmedicated ADHD and enables me to truly relax and experience a quiet and energizing interval. The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!

I just cried now listening to the part about taking a photo. My husband does photography and I always feel so ugly when I have to take a photo... but I EARNED this! Every wrinkle and every stretchmark! I earned it! Realizing now- I haven’t accepted myself! Realising that I haven’t found a way to love the ordinariness of myself - that is why I cringe...

People come for the message, they stay for the personality. Brené delivers the message in a way that we can hear. And while we’re enjoying her company, with our heads exploding with AHA MOMENTS, getting enlightened while being entertained, she lives what she’s saying. So she brings it on home to our hearts and minds.

I have tears in my eyes listening to Brené, her championing of "ordinary" is utterly profound. Even though she's absolutely extraordinary. (Or if she's what ordinary looks like, I want to be ordinary too). Her authenticity, heart, depth, courage to just show up fully as she is, is humbling and inspiring. So grateful that a woman like Brené exists in the world. That her message resonates with so many. We are waking up. People long for authenticity. I know that I certainly do. She makes my world a better place. Thank you so much for this wonderful interview.

33:33 When responding to Tim's admitted fear of alienating some of his foundational audience ("the go getters" lets just call em) by being more interested in the "softer" or messier "inner-game" stuff lately, Brene masterfully notes the contrast between "practices that improve measurable efficiency" and the "practice of real self-awareness/acceptance/evolution" being linear vs. nonlinear processes. Inner psychological development is much more like a garden, there are observable trends to organic change but it's mixed in with systems of chaos like weather and species competition, etc. Balancing patience with myself with the right amount of directed pressure around a very simple plan has been my central life issue lately and if anything, these kind of conversations will have my fuller attention. Excited to see more discussions around this paradox of inner growth/surrender vs outer world creative productivity: Taken to both extremes, you have the far side of woo saying you really need to "accept the reality you want" before you can get there and the Universe will just take care of it "when you have your inner world right"; on the extreme opposite "just do it" side, you have people suggesting that growth and success simply need to be "hacked" and your willpower simply strengthened and forced thru ritual systems, a cold and linear achievement process.
@dr.michellelavigne1410

Agree...we all fall somewhere on the bell curves of acceptance and striving. Ideally we add counterweights if we are trending too far in one direction. Appreciate your thoughtful and well-articulated insights.
@feosTAS
@feosTAS 3 года назад
I'd argue you need to master both eventually, to be able to professionally operate between the 2 extremes, constantly improving your balancing skills. Cold and linear achievement process is learning to deal with daily grind and not losing your temper, Jock calls this discipline. You need tons and tons of boring training to be able to perform when your muse finally arrives. So while the creativity is not there, master the hardware part of the techniques. Then whenever you feel inspired, you'll reach much further after all this prior training. To reject the rules of musical theory when your creativity demands that, you need to know those rules first. To overcome yourself, you need to know your limits first.

Was caught up by the part where you talked about the correlation between "self-acceptance" and "complacency". I would like to believe that self acceptance is most likely to negatively correlate with complacency, what I think is the most accurate is that "self-awareness" wouldn't want that you remain complacent.

Tim, you did an amazing job with this interview. In areas, you did such great, deep listening and left it very open. Not interrupting or 'leading' the conversational flow is so amazing and a real talent to know when, to let an amazing guest like Brene really have time to relax and let her ideas unfold, connections be made, thought journeys be taken Bravo! Such a lack of tension so palpable in her as she speaks, knowing she has your full attention and will be given all the time she needs! Also like how you let the conversation meander.... yet, if felt very purposeful. That's an art. Finally, loved that you shared and shared deeply at points, and really took time to contribute yourself to the flow and meat of the conversation on super important and personal topics. Whole thing also shows your warmth and friendship with Brene and considerable skills as an interviewer. Super enjoyed this experience and learned a ton!! (journalling about things already....ha ha). Thank you.
