Seek Thermal Camera Comparison - Compact Pro vs Compact XR vs Compact. Which To Buy?

The Seek Compact, this one is the least expensive of the 3 and is currently selling for about $250 on Amazon. The resolution is at 206 by 156, a 36 degree field of view and can view a distance of 1,000 ft.
Now for our use case, smartphone repair, the viewing distance probably doesn’t matter, but it’s there in the specs.
Then we have the Compact XR at $297. It also has the same 206 by 156 resolution, but it has a more narrow viewing angle of 20 degrees, and a viewing distance is 1,800 feet.
Then we have the Compact Pro, this is the one I use and you’ve seen in my previous youtube videos, which sells for $458 as of today, it has a higher resolution of 320 by 240, a viewing angle of 32 degrees and 1800 ft viewing distance.
One tip I would give you guys, when you’re on Amazon browsing these cameras, scroll down a little bit below where the price is and you’ll often find a super discounted Seek Camera, because it’s used or open box.
The one i’m personally using, I actually bought it used and saved about $50 at that time.
In summary, the Compact is the lowest price, the XR is basically the same as the Compact, but with a longer viewing distance, which technically doesn’t really matter for us in Smartphone Repair.
Then there’s the fancy Compact Pro which has a higher resolution, but also a higher price tag
So let’s actually test these out in a real-world scenario
We'll use an iPhone 8 Plus with a VDD MAIN short in the video.

I picked up the Seek Compact for home diy stuff like air sealing. Its interesting and will take some practice, but its not as sensitive as I thought it would be. I really wish they offered the hi-lo limit set like on the Pro because the constant changing of the gradient makes it hard to spot stuff like hot pipes or slightly warm wirres in walls. It does reveal how bad my insulation is tho :( I wish I had the budget to test the Flir One right now too.

thanks. ive got an xr used for 185€ its VERY narrow fov makes it bad. its better for outdoors. You didnt mention the cameras doing a clicking noise every 2-4 seconds (3:00 3:03 for example) and freezing the video as it clicks. seen it in other videos. did all three cams have that clicking?

Nice video Jesse, thanks so much the video was helpful but please can u make another video that isnt on vcc main or a short that @0.020 amp please. i recently bought the IIT thermal camera. and i must say that is the worst thermal camera.. I can bearly us it to find short. so pls can u make another on some secondary line short please.. thank u love what u do. really helpful particular the video u did on wyne bonici software for iphone that randomly restart, u it helped alot. thank and keep doing great jobs I do hope u get better on that CPU reball😊😊

Hi, i dont recommend that. Get the iOS version if you're going to use an iPhone. Regarding the stand, where are you located? I can link you to a reseller of my Seek Stand you see in the video.

@@VCCBoardRepairs I ordered the USB-C version. I hope I won't regret it, it's my first thermal camera 🙂 I have a tablet and a phone with USB-C port. I couldn't resist the discount of about $200 😀 . I am from EU - Czech Republic. I don't know where I would order the stand in the EU. I found a pretty good model for a 3D Printer, so I will probably print the holder. Or do you have another idea? @@Smart112567 the USB C version will work fine. You can find the Seek Stand here. Although it's for iOS. But you can replace the extension cable to a 1m USB C extension & it should also work: www.replacebase.co.uk/parco-pa-5f-simul-focal-trinocular-zoom-stereo-microscope-stand-with-arm-1 Contact them to see when they'll have them available.

the XR is capable of focusing from a few inches to hundreds of feet I use mine for search and rescue and to inspect breakers.

How do these compare to Qianli super cam or super cam X?

Great question. I've used the first gen Qianli Supercam and it was ok. the problem is the lack of a macro lens option, so you basically have to look at the board very far away. So it's not practical for finding shorts. You can definitely see where the heat is and in many cases see it. But sometimes, it's hard to tell which cap exactly is the short. Plus it's a lot more expensive than a Seek + Macro + Stand and it's a lot bigger & bulkier, requires a PC & can be tricky to setup The seek solution i show in the video is a much better overall solution for thermal detection on iPhone/iPad logic board fault finding.

i dont think that will work. I use a separate dedicated iPhone 7 Plus for my thermal camera use. I would recommend you do the same. Don't use your personal phone for it. Cheaper than buying a new camera for USB C

@@B.E.H. aahh! He was testing a thermocamera. He wanted to test it with a short that draws only 100mA. Instead finding a short that draws only 100mA he could just reduce the injected voltage till the short draws 100mA. Ohm's law. Make sense?

Don't buy Seek thermal cameras. They are garbage. Two I owned stopped working and the one my tech had failed on HIM! That's 3 out of 3 that I've seen - FAIL. Wasted money, people.

YOU GOT SCAMMED....Seek Thermal has a warning on their website that the Compact PRO is NOT sold on Amazon. Those are FAKES. Its a Compact or Compact XR in a fake box with Pro outer housing. You can only buy a CompactPro via Seek Thermal or an authorized store that doesn't put them on Amazon. You got scammed.
