Cambridge researcher Aubrey de Grey argues that aging is merely a disease -- and a curable one at that. Humans age in seven basic ways, he says, all of which can be averted. Aubrey claims he has drawn a roadmap to defeat biological aging. He provocatively proposes that the first human beings who will live to 1,000 years old have already been born. With his astonishingly long beard, wiry frame and penchant for bold and cutting proclamations, de Grey is a magnet for controversy. A computer scientist, self-taught biogerontologist and researcher, he has co-authored journal articles with some of the most respected scientists in the field.

Give me the RIGHT to live 500 years and at that point I will decide if I want more or not. At least, give me the chance to decide !

I'm going to live forever, or die trying. There is no limit to the things I would do for the ability to be alive in a billion years. Its tragic that i may die having never seen even a fraction of a percent of all the infinite wonder there is in the universe, simply because my body and mind are programmed to fall apart after awhile.

i don't want to be immortal, i just want to live long enough to experience space travel and witness the existence of other races in the universe than i can go to sleep for good

It's a shame that Aubrey's time on the stage is limited and consequently, this presentation comes off as too rushed. From a scientific perspective, cell-maintenance is a very viable and realistic proposition. Our societal structure has implemented in the majority's minds that aging is a perfectly acceptable phenomenon but realistically, it's a phenomenon that we have become conditioned to because everyone watching these videos grew up with age-related deaths around us. Think of the wisdom that our species can acquire through a lifespan of 500-1000 years or more. The knowledge, the innovation, the memories, the accomplishments. The universe is a vast terrain and curing aging along with equally ambitious projects such as space colonization can give rise to unlimited possibilities to our species. I marvel at the fact that I am alive and conscious in a time where such innovative ideas are being talked about as a possibility. Here's to immortality, infinite wisdom and unlimited potential for exploration. Here's to Science!

We are living in an era in which immortality is within the grasp of many people living today. Those who live long enough to see the singularity in 2045 will see an explosion in anti-aging technology. Remember, technological progress is exponential, not linear. Though we see very little in terms of anti-aging today, you can be sure that it will soon sky-rocket. It's an exciting time to be alive.

Have been a big fan of Aubrey de grey and his SENS organization. Death from aging is something I hope fewer or fewer of us will die from. In the future, hopefully death by aging will be an optional thing. Those that embrace aging are welcome to die from it, that's your choice, and we will respect your choice. But the rest of us will choose to transcend aging. As we age, our risks of developing cancer, and dementia such as Alzheimer disease increase exponentially. I for one would not want myself nor any other person to be subjected to such cruelty.

All those people passionately against this and shouting that you shouldn't tamper with nature.. It's going to be really funny when those people are 90 and someone holds a cocktail in front of them that'll make them 20 again.

I'll be 62, October 2023. I went back to school in 2010 to do graduate work in Gerontology. I WISH I could have seen Dr. Aubrey de Grey speak, but never have. I think this guy is brilliant. I was hired (at USC) to work on the tail end of a 40+ year longitudinal study on Alzheimer's (a tragic cognitive disease). I was responsible for cognitive testing (and some gofer work being new in the field at 49 - lol). This guy is my hero as I've always had a fascination for longevity and immortality. I wrote a successful memoir in 2022 called "Alive After Dying" (not about life after death) and will be releasing book 1 of a sci-fi trilogy incorporating some of Dr. de Grey's theories called "Her Immortal Menagerie" literally this weekend. I would never have thought about releasing it if it hadn't been for this amazing man.

Even if I don't want to donate to SENS, I realized that donating to any med research org actually speeds up how fast viable treatments are discovered

Always great to see SENS continuing to progress. A lot of people are going to look back decades from now and be very thankful to Aubrey de Grey.

Such an important talk. Not enough people have seen this. In a better world, this would have as many views as Gangnam Style!
