SeekOutside Floorless Shelter Teepee setup and Review - ultralight tent

I’ve been using the SeekOutside 8 man Teepee and stove on most of my backcountry hunts for the past 3 years. This video shows how to set up the teepee using the center pole as a radial measuring stick which allows you to get it right the first time every time, no need to adjust stakes after the initial setup. I also discuss some of the ups and downs of floorless shelters from real world experience.
The 8 man is big enough for 4 guys and all the gear for a 10 day hunting trip but that’s about as many dudes as I’d want to cram into the shelter for any length of time. Three guys would be a little better, and two with stove and all the gear allows way more than enough room. Although the 8 man is overkill for one guy backpacking it's very doable if a few guys are going and want to split gear between themselves.
The ultralight wood stove is an absolute game changer for late season backcountry hunts or winter camping trips. Being able to get a fire going, put the coffee on, and warm the tent before ever getting out of your sleeping bag will make getting up on those frigid mornings a pleasure (come on, you know you’re guilty of not wanting to get out of your bag when the temperature plummets)!
We had the teepee out last year on a late season elk hunt when the temperature was way below zero, minus 13 before wind chill to be exact. But even with subzero temps you could get the tent to 70 degrees in just a few minutes and have to coffee brewing before ever slipping out of your snug down bag. You know what, forget that, it’ll make you soft. You should forget all that and cultivate a tough mental attitude…
Seriously though, I’ve been very impressed with how well this system works. The tent and stove are very light weight, made in the USA, constructed very well, and has not let me down in three years of hard use in Idaho’s backcountry. If you’ve got any questions about this set up or any of the gear I use, just leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: bowhunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

Hi Clay, always appreciate your vids. I have a tip for you. We've been using their 12 man (they made a prototype for me as they weren't making that big a tipi back then) for close to 10 years to pack into the wilderness here in CO. You can save some weight by using a small rope, cut to the right length, to mark your perimeter. Put a loop on one end. We put a stake in the middle and then use a tent stake to scribe the perimeter in the dirt. Then use that same rope to go cut a small dead tree down to the right length for your pole. Leave some branch stubs on it to hang stuff on. Works great for lights, drying clothes, etc.

Is the tent material rip stop? Also, does the stove come with a spark arrestor?
@clayhayeshunter
@clayhayeshunter 5 лет назад
Yes, it’s ripstop silnylon. I think my stove has a spark arrest in the damper.

Super great idea!, you made a bell tent out of a teepee. Much more space. Great idea

Couldn't see exactly, but it looked like you tied a Taut-line hitch. I prefer the slippery grip hitch, but they essentially work the same for adjusting the tension.

I'll check that out.

How do you secure the stakes to the loops? The stakes have a small indentation and rope loop but I can't seem to figure out how to secure it with the tent loop sliding off of the stake.
@clayhayeshunter
@clayhayeshunter 7 месяцев назад
The stakes are angles outwards. The tension of the tent holds them on.

Man, you need to do this more (or I need to follow you more). This was the BEST demonstration on the tent and stove setup I have seen. Super simple and covered it all, with experience thrown in. S.O. needs to hire you to do all of their demos and media.

Clay, are you still using this setup? Do you like the titanium stove and chimney? I'd like to see what you recommend now, three years down the road. Thanks.

Yes and yes. I still use this when weight is an issue. We have a big canvas wall tent when weight isn't an issue.

Ive been trying to figure it out but do not understand what the advantage of not having a floor is it just a weight thing? Do you use a ground cloth? Thank you love the videos. Ps that stovepipe is super slick
@clayhayeshunter
@clayhayeshunter 3 года назад
It cuts weight, but the big thing for me is that a floorless does accumulate a bunch of dirt. I use a ground cloth when it’s wet out.

Good Video! Subscribed. Hope you had a good hunting season! Still isn't over yet here, but hope you got your freezer stocked up! I've been looking at tipi tents all year on You Tube and other methods, and your demonstration shows some specific questions I had answered. Wish you mentioned your height, so I could estimate your height to the height of the tent. As well I would love to hear the weight in the video so I didn't have to look it up! But beyond that great job. Showing how each person does their setup sometimes helps me determine more of what I am looking for in a hot tent. Very much appreciated and hats off!

Clay, Have you ever had any issues with rattle snake with the floorless tents? I hunt down near Salmon and have run into rattle snakes on the trail and have been a little freaked out about floorless tenting.

Us a string with to loops in it half of yr radius , put yr center pin in put the line loop over it and then stretch out yr sting. And put the next pin using the other loop and just walk around you will get a perfect circle every time.
@clayhayeshunter
@clayhayeshunter 6 лет назад
only with a zero stretch string though.

Clay do you believe one could set a tarp down on the days, places, or in situations where condensation could be an issue?
@clayhayeshunter

If the condensation is coming from the ground it would probably help.

Put some paracord through the tie out points and stack rocks on it. You can also put rocks on the bottom skirt.

I’m pretty positive it’s a tautline hitch. I’m not sure what a rolling hitch is (could be a different name for it). Again “pretty” positive.
