Seerah of Prophet Muhammad 52 - Background of the wives of Muhammad - Yasir Qadhi | 6th March 2013 

Summary: Khadija bint Khuwaylid- first wife of Muhammad saw, Aisha bint Abi Bakr- marriage was from a dream where a women was seen in a veil and the veil was uncovered and it was Aisha Sauda Bint Zam’ah - she was eldest wife of Muhammad saw, she was large and walked slowly (requested to leave early from Muzdalfah to Mecca in Hajjatul Wadaa) she sacrificed her night for Aisha. after Badr, when she saw Suhail Ibn Amr as prisoner of war she lost her senses and said “why would you disgrace yourself as prisoner you should’ve died honorable death”, she said this next to Muhammad saw unknowingly. Hafsa bint Umar- was first married to Khunais Ibn Hudhafa (they did migration to abysnina) and he took part in Badr and Uhud, died after Uhud. Hafsa was sad she lost her husband. Then Umar went to Uthman who had lost Ruqayyah and offered Hafsa to him but he said he doesn’t want to get married, then he went to Abu Bakr and he said “I’ll think about it” but didn’t respond then Muhammad saw offered prospal, Abu Bakr and Uthman said what they said because they knew Muhammad saw was planning to marry her (if he wasn’t they would’ve accepted). Hafsa was main competition of Aisha, Hafsa was 20 when she married Muhammad saw. Muhammad saw have her one talaaq but Gibreel said no don’t do this because she is Sawaama and Qawaama (fasts and prays) and she will be your wife in Jannah Zaynab bint Khuzaymah- one of two wives who died in life of Muhammad saw, very little is known about her. She was first married to Ubaydah bin al Harith (the one who died after Mubarazah in Badr) and had 10 kids from him. She was known as Ummul masakeen (mother of the poor) because she cared for the poor, Muhammad saw married her since she had no family to look after her, she was married to Muhammad saw for a few months, then she died and she was first wife to be buried in Baqitul Gharqad. Her mother Hind bint Awf (was pagan) was known as “most noble mother in law in history”, she had five daughters: 1..) Zaynab who is described above 2.) Maymunah bint al Harith who also married Muhammad saw 3.) Lubaba ummul Fadl- married to Abass and was mother to Abdullah Ibn Abbass 4.) Asma Bint Umays- married Jafar bin abi Talib, then Abu Bakr then Ali Bin Abi Talib (gave all of them kids) 5.) Salma Bint Umays- married Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib and was mother to Ummarah (after Muhammad saw did Umrah, Ummarah wanted to be with the Muslims so she ran to Muslims and Ali Zaid and Jafar were in dispute who should take care of her so Muhammad saw said Jafar should since she was married to her aunt). 6.) Lubaba As sughra- was married to Al Waleed bin Mughira (chief of Banu Makhzoom) and was mother of Khalid bin Al Waleed (khalid is cousin to Ibn Abass) Ume Salamah Hind bint abi Umayya- married to Abu Salama (they did Hijra to abysinniya and to Medina), Abu Salamah died after Uhud from wounds. On his death bed, she said to Abu that I won’t marry after you to console him but Abu said “will you obey me” she said “yes” then he said marry after I die, and he made dua that May Allah grant her a husband better then me. After he died she made dua that Muhammad saw said to say when calamity falls. First Abu Bakr proposes to her but she declined since she thought (no one can be better then Abu Salamah) then Muhammad saw came to her house and proposed to her, she said there’s three conditions you should know: 1.) I am a women who has jeoulsy/gheerah so I am scared that I will get jeoulus and it will displease you then displease Allah (in response Muhammad saw said I will make Dua to Allah to get rid of your gheerah) 2.) I am aging (she was in mid 30s while Hafsa and Aisha were in prime youth) (in response Muhammad saw said “I am also afflicted with this same calamity of aging” 3.) she already has children and family (in response Muhammad saw said “your family are my family” Muhammad saw married her in 4th year AH, she is known for Hudaybiyah where the sahabah were confused and irritated at what was going on so Muhammad saw was thinking about negotiating but Umm said they don’t negotiate just shave your head off they will all follow and what is what happened (she lived until late 80s, Abu Hurairah led her Janaza)

37:00 Anytime a calamity befalls a Muslim e.g. somebody dies, you lose money, you hear you’ve lost your job i.e. any calamity (museebah) then make sure the very FIRST thing you do is make this dua: say ‘Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, Allahumma ajirni fi musibati wa akhlif li khairan minha‘ (Verily we belong to Allah and truly to Him shall we return. O Allah! Protect me in this calamity that has befallen me and replace it with something better).

1.“Ubbay said: There occurred in my mind a sort of denial which did not occur even during the Days of Ignorance. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him, saw how I was affected, was affected (by a wrong idea), he struck my chest. I broke into a sweat and felt as if I were looking at Allah in fear.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1356) Clearly the Prophet, may Allah bless him, did it to ward off the evil thoughts that occurred in the mind of Ubayy, may Allah be pleased with him.

Episode 52 + 69 Notes Background to the Wives of the Prophet SAW The Prophet SAW was initially married to Khadijah RA and after her death. The Prophet SAW was not seen smiling for many months and he was recommended by Khawlah Bint Hakim RA to take another wife. She recommended him two women and the Prophet SAW decided to marry both. After them, the Prophet SAW married many other women. The Ummahatul Mu'minin are: 1. Khadijah Bint Khuwaylid 2. Sawdah Bint Zam’a 3. Aisha Bint Abu Bakr 4. Hafsa Bint Umar 5. Umma Salamah 6. Zaynab Bint Khuzaymah 7. Zaynab Bint Jahsh 8. Juwayriya Bint Al Harith 9. Umm Habiba 10. Safiyya Bint Huyayy 11. Fun Trivia fact: After the marriage of Zaynab Bint Jahsh RA was when the laws of Hijab were revealed. They were revealed after almost everything else. Fun Trivia fact: Khamr was made haram, after the Invasion of Banu Nadir and a short while before the marriage of Zaynab Bint Jahsh RA. Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW told Zayd Ibn Thabit RA to learn Hebrew. This was done so that he can interpret any letters the Prophet SAW receives from the Yahud. Zayd RA did this within 15 days. Fun Trivia fact: Zayd Ibn Thabit RA was he personal scribe of the Prophet SAW and complied the Qur’an after his death. His knowledge of the Qur’an was excellent. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA stated that, “the first time I saw Juwayriya RA, I hated her” and this was because Aisha RA knew, that the Prophet SAW would find her attractive. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA stated that, “I don’t know of any lady who brought more blessings to her tribe than Juwayriya RA”. This was because her entire tribe became Muslim. Fun Trivia fact: The chief of the Banu Mustaliq, Haritha Bin Abi Dirar fled and wasn’t captured by the Muslims. Fun Trivia fact: Umm Habiba RA had the most grandeur wedding out of all of the Wives of the Prophet SAW. This is because the Najashi did it in Abyssinia on behalf of the Prophet SAW. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA’s only love rival for the Prophet SAW was his wife Zaynab Bint Jahsh RA. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA despite considering Zaynab RA to be a love rival. Always spoke of Zaynab RA in high regard and considered her to be the most pious lady she ever saw. Fun Trivia fact: Zaynab RA was the first of the wives of the Prophet SAW to pass away after him. Fun Trivia fact: Zaynab RA was given the best Walimah out of any of the wives of the Prophet SAW. Her Walimah included a miracle where the Prophet SAW used a small dish to feed a lot of people. Fun Trivia fact: The wives of the Prophet SAW were divided into two camps. One led by Aisha RA and the other led by Umm Salamah RA. Zaynab RA was in the latter camp. Fun Trivia fact: The Nikkah contract of Zaynab RA to the Prophet SAW, is in Surah Ahzab, Ayah 37. Therefore there were no witnesses or Wali needed. Fun Trivia fact: During Umar RA reign, the Wives of the Prophet SAW, received the most amount of money. More than even the first converts. Rasulullah SAW recommended that people have one wife in ordinary life. As recommended in Surah An-Nisa verse 4. A man married to one woman is more important and closer to not committing abuse. Even the Prophet did not allow his son-in-law, Ali bin Abi Talib, to marry his daughter, Fatimah Az-Zahra with another woman.

What's a talaq

Hazrat Muhammad have ways to solve his personal matters using religion.people around him were so dumb who cud not see that obvious trick.every time he is in trouble he pulled Gibril out of his pocket..even aisha teas him over this..its fasinate me that well educated people like him do not get it..religion can num minds.

So basically Sawdah feared that "this symbol of mercy" a.k.a Muhammad would divorce her merely coz she was getting old & unattractive. She clearly didn't do it out of her own will and even if she did, would you really expect a MERCIFUL PROPHET to go along with that? things dont add up. If he truly was a Mercy for mankind he would say "No Sawdah don't worry my dear I'll still keep visiting you". Think about it from an unbiased, logical & moral perspective.
