Thanks for the new content! I always thumbs-up a new game sack video before I watch it because I know it isn't going to suck. Sometimes it sucks. But the thumb is always there.
Cool. Just did a video on these myself last week. Missed 5 or so volumes because I don't own them but crammed all the ones I do own in to one show. It was good to hear your comments on these Joe, especially the earlier ones since like myself, you're bit of a Sega fan.
It's always weird when 2 of RU-vidrs you subscribe to release a video covering the same game/movie/etc. within a few days of one another. I get thinking, "um, did I watch that already?"
No other reviewer makes me laugh out loud like you. So many times my girlfriend asks me why I’m chucking, so often it’s GameSack. She loves you too Joe.
Just finished Generations 1 a while ago. It's so sad that they didn't see it through and remake the rest of the series. I would have loved seeing PS3 turn into a game that could be loved by more people than me.
Gameplay wise ps3 is better than 2 imo. Story obviously doesnt stand a chance since it was originally planned to be a gaiden (side story) entry, until sega did what sega does and meddle.
3 would have benefitted greatly from a remake. 4 is one of the greatest JRPGs ever made and doesn't need the help; the pacing, the characters, the music are all incredible. Chrono Trigger is the only better paced RPG than Phantasy Star 4, with the latter getting a nostalgia boost because I was much younger when I played it.
They were planning on skipping PS3, and remaking PS4. The 3 games were supposed to be a collection release as Phantasy Star Trilogy. Phantasy Star 3 needs a remake the most, but it needs a lot more work than they were willing to put into it here, so I’m glad they skipped it.
Fist of the North Star is based on a beloved & ultra-violent Anime/Manga Franchise that also takes inspiration from Mad Max and Bruce Lee and in some weird way became influential to other franchises in the future such as Double Dragon and even Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. When Kenshiro does that wild scream of his, it's an homage to Bruce Lee that was even used in nearly every rendition of the games moving forward.
My only issue with Phantasy Star on Ages was the horrible noise the doors does every time you enter ir exit a room. I really liked the art and music and the map is super usefull.
That Fantasy Zone release is really interesting with it's polygons imitating pixel art. Kind of seems like a super early version of the tech the recent Guilty Gears are using.
I'm surprised that you're gonna upload part 2 next week, part 1 is already quite a doozy in terms of length and content, and is easily its own episode. Thank you for the extra upload though, much appreciated. Also those Hokuto no Ken and Alien Syndrome skits are hilarious, made me laugh hard which is welcome in my fatigued from stress state xD
I want the remade golden axe soundtrack on a CD. Sega released a golden axe music compilation which didn’t include the 2500 sega ages music. For shame.
Too bad the sega ages on the switch been canceled due to low sales. M2 done a great job adding new content to classic genesis and early arcade games. I was looking forward to see what could they done with sega saturn and dreamcast games. Hopefully we can get more quality M2 sega ages games in the future
I've been waiting for this episode about the Sega 2500 on PS2 for so long! I love this series, and also thought that the Sega Classics we got on PS2 was super underrated. Thank you for finally doing them justice
I would rebuy that version of Alien Syndrome in a heartbeat today. That and Virtua Racing were the highlights of the US package. BTW, Alien Syndrome is actually a twin stick shooter. The footage looked like you were just using the the fire button.
Real shame we didn't get a remake of Phantasy Star 3. Sure, it's the weakest game, but that's exactly why it deserves a remake. It would be a chance to try and get closer to what the original devs intended.
Hey Joe, what's the name of the tune playing in the background from the 07:30 Mark? It sounds like a Samba version of Splash Wave from Outrun, but I'm not familiar with an arrangement of it that sounds like that, and a quick search on RU-vid isn't providing any matches. Thanks! Edit: Just realised it's not Splash Wave, it's After Burner from, er, After Burner. Still not familiar with the arrangement though, thought it might be the version from After Burner 3 on the Mega CD, but nope.
God I wish Dragon Force had an english patch, the Saturn version is one of my personal favorites. Always wanted to play the PS2 remake but really would find it more enjoyable with a patch.
I've always wondered about these games but never did bother to look them up or try them out on an emulator. It is great you are doing a video on every single one. It will be helpful in the future as well when somebody wants to learn about these games.
Regarding Dragon Force... I don't speak japanese, but I had played the Saturn version to death, so I was able to play the PS2 version intuitively. I do credit my friend for playing the Saturn version at my house and giving me an incentive to learn its mechanics though, because it had been on the backlog for years when we played it in 2005, and I sure as hell wasn't about the just read the instructions like some kind of chump. The PS2 version does have rearranged music and a bunch of added content. It's also a very addictive game once you get the hang of it, so I hope you'll give it another shot some day, hopefully when translated on the PS2.

I have fond memories of Black Belt. :) I was very surprised when I found out it was a modified Hokuto no Ken game, decades later, since, by then, I had become a fan of the manga. And I definitely recommend the manga. It hasn't aged as well as, say, Dragon Ball, but it's still a very fun ride. Back in the day, I'd probably have gotten a few of these Ages games, since I tend to like SEGA's classic arcades a lot. But I never had a PS2 and none of them came out in the PC.
Fist of the North Star is based on awesome "Mad max combined with Enter the Dragon" Post-Apocalypse Earth Anime series from the mid 80's that's based on a Manga. Kenshiro is not shouting "apapapapa" you goof ball, his Ki-Ai yell is "AH TA TA TA TA TA TA TA ATTAACK!!!" "Black Belt" was Sega massively altered version of the Master System Fist of the North Star game....
Joe , is it true, your new Vice President "Harris, is going to take away all the games in your collection that she deems " too violent "?? -(im from Canada )
It's a shame you guys don't talk about the devs of each game, since they gave their own flavor to them. Great video overall, can't wait for part 2 and all the M2 goodness.
A word of caution about the US release. Make sure you save your data for Virtua Racing first. If you don't, your save file can get corrupted. Doesn't seem like they knew what they were doing when they tried combining all of the individual save files into one...
Wow I had no idea there was a fan translation of Phantasy Star 2--I've wanted to play it ever since I heard there's a way you can keep Nei for the whole game.
I don't care if the grinding is too much in Phantasy Star II or any JRPGs, I can train myself longer until I've reached what I wanted. I'm patient with grinding. Also, Phantasy Star II is my favorite Sega Genesis game.
I got the Classics Collection a while ago, and I'm glad I did. I really liked Fantasy Zone, Tant-R, Space Harrier, and Alien Syndrome. Maybe someday they'll put out a full translated collection of these.
I definitely own this an played the heck out of some of these games. I wish they released ALL of them, definitely want to play the phantasy star games and hokuto no ken game.
This series gets a LOT better in the later releases. The early ones where they tried to do 3D updates are definitely rougher. Still, I really actually enjoy the reimagined Alien Syndrome, and the Gain Ground remake is fun if you've played the Genesis game to death and want a new challenge.
I have the US release of this the Sega Classics Collection on PS2, which had 10 Sega Ages games and it is unfortunate they didn't release more to the West.
I didn't know "Virtua Fighter 2" came to the PS2 arcade Perfect. I'd like to track that down! I have an American PS2. Is there a way to easily modify it to play Japanese games?
I love Gamesack! Really do look forwards to it every Sunday (and a bonus episode coming! Whoo!) I'm kind of ignorant about translated games, but is there somewhere I just buy a translated (bootleg probably, shame on me) disc of Phantasy Star Generations? I'd love to somehow just pop it into my PS2 and play it in English without having to download and install patches or whatever I'd have to.
Anime stills in Phantasy Star: amateur. Uh, amateur? They look well done to me. You don’t think much of anime visuals, do you? To you they look like fan drawings but eh be what you want to be. I don’t care, it’s the Internet after all.
Joe, if you haven't seen it already, I highly highly recommend the Hokuto no Ken anime, it features everything you enjoyed in this remake along with a storyline of mythical proportions and even more god tier sound design. Both the OG series and it's movie adaptation are well worth watching.
