A short video covering two Megadrives and an issue related to sync on the French RGB Megadrive. The board revisions (as far as I can tell) are VA6 and VA4. I also cover the modification required to VA4 boards in order to resolve lockups and hanging when used with a 32x.

I figired out about the sync signal for the regular mega drives . Just solder composite sync (purple cable) to the other purple cable and separate it from the transistor like you awrady did . You can amke a switch to choose between 2 nodes . Be prepared to have issue wirh the green coil next to the IC. I come address 2 units with this coil goes defective. It become a resistor and very hot . There is a way for this too. Change it , but it can eventually fail again in the future. So make a switch for VDD pin (orange cable) to choose between 12V produced by this IC when the coil is ok, and 5V. When this coil goes bad the IC can not otput 12V animore , but about 5 , 6 and there are very bad interferes on the screen . If you completely remove this coli the IC will no produce any output voltage and TV will not turn automatically in rhe SCART RGB mode , but this is not a rpblem , becouse you can do this manually via the TV remote control. This is a easyest variant if you wish . About that 5V and 12V to pin 8. 12V are to force TV to switch 4:3 and 5V is to switch 16:9 . But you can always do it manually like above situation.

I have French Sega how to run it with the regular SCART RGB cable? I do not have this special one with the PCB. :(

Through some research (Sega Retro mostly), the Mega Modem port was removed and the video encoder is through-hole, so the board's a VA6.5. The final revision Europe got was 6.8, where the encoder is surface-mount. Yes, I know this video is super old and crusty.

Shit you find in Megadrives... I was given an ASIAN PAL-B that had the RF unit inside with the wir coming through a small hole on the back. The RF unit was velcro'd down. The power unit was soldered to the main board

Thanks GadgetUK. A week ago I found a cheap Megadrive for 17 pounds. I had to buy a PSU and the Scart cable. So today I've opened the Megadrive and there was some rust (the board came from the UK). There were some places where I wasn't sure if there was continuity in the traces. So I did just like you do, used the fiberglass pen with IPA and all of the traces came to shinny copper again but one of the chip under the cartridge port; the third pin on the left. Lucky that I've seen your video as I see that it isn't connected although the trace gets very near it, but it doesn't connect to the chip. At the end I used nails lacquer to protect the board. I think that I should search for something better. Another thing: Just opening the case, trying to unplug the cable from the power led, the pins broke on the board. I see that you leave the cable connected, but it's a pain if you want to clean the case and the board. I soldered two pins to the mobo and now I can plug and unplug that cable.

Hey mate, the "WTF" :) mod on pin 6, is on the Address Strobe output signal. On boards where they used the MC68000 they had to add the resistor to limit the current else I believe you get a crashing issue after it has been powered up for a while. I guess it must be a bad combination where other chip(s) are drawing more power on the Address Stobe than the MC68000 is rated for per pin
@GadgetUK164

Thanks! Yes, I did later work out that it was supposed to be there - still looks like a bodge fix lol. You are totally correct on the issue regards crashing and current limit - that's what I had read since this vid.

To convert you could get sync directly from the VDP like some RGBS Sega bypass boards. A standard console also has a resistor and capacitor connected to digital 5v on the sync line so you might want to recreate that.

My HDG VA6 Genesis runs fine with Genesis games, however when I try to get a 32X game to work, I just get a black screen. I also have tried my SegaCD2 and it won't power up with the Gen1. My VA3 and VA1 Gen2 models will run the SegaCD2 and 32X with no issues. I have cleaned every console connectors/ribbons, so cleaning is not an issue. I think there is something wrong inside the Gen1 console, but I don't know where to look.

Yeah, I really wanted to run this Gen1 because it looks better with everything attached and has the best sound performance. I may just sell the console to a game store and give another Gen1 a shot (they are cheap enough). If not I will stick with my Gen2s. I cleaned everything, they were all filthy... I don't understand why people don't clean up consoles before they sell them. I see some images that looks like the Genesis was buried underground or something! haha

@GadgetUK164 Hey, many many thanks as you got me motivated to fix my 2 french MD (I'm french so ~~). Dry/broken solders on cart port for the 1st one was the issue. On the 2nd one, I can't really tell : random black screens when "cold", it will sometimes freeze on some games (like Earthworm Jim, Sonic 1/2/Knuckles running flawless), no issues when "warmed up". I re-did some solders, global visual inspection but can't find any clue (the random phenomen not helping). Otherwise, except beeing "rare" what's the point of having those 1601-09 ? I'd consider sell one and get back a "standard" MD but I can't really find any reason to do so ...
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 лет назад
Glad you sorted one of your MDs =D The one that seems OK when warm - does sound like a dry solder joint, perhaps on one of the SMD chips. The 1601-09 is RGB only - that's the main reason to own one, I think they give really really clear output (when I tested mine I noticed no jail bars, whereas my other VA4s all have very bad jailbars).

The revision was on the board. Under IC4 there were two lines with two numbers followed by VA5 and VA6. The number corresponding to whatever is printed on IC4 tells you whether it’s a VA5 or VA6. Basically, this board was designed for the version of IC4 with the integrated TMSS boot ROM but they still had a bunch of the old non-TMSS chips on hand. They clearly designed the board to accommodate either. It is a VA5 or a VA6 based on whatever populates IC4. There are VA5/6 boards in every region.
@ZonicMirage
@ZonicMirage 4 месяца назад
Additionally, the TMSS ROM exists in the VA5, but it's glitched. It only displays the message if the region/language jumpers are set to English. Also the Mega Modem port was removed and the video encoder is through-hole, so it's a 6.5 specifically.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 4 месяца назад
@@ZonicMirage Interesting. I got a PAL-modded Japanese VA5 from Thailand in January and the first thing I did was gut the PAL mod and turn the PAL/NTSC switch into an English/Japanese switch. Mine doesn’t display TMSS in either position, even with region-protected games. I just reviewed footage of my initial testing where Lost Vikings II shows a region lock message and Castlevania Bloodlines freezes on a Konami logo until I switch it to English and power cycle. No TMSS message on either. Maybe there’s some kind of half-implemented TMSS but I’m not seeing it. I still haven’t seen an American VA5 system in person or on the Internet. Japan had more incompatible first party titles so SEGA may have kept all VA5s for that market to smooth the transition. Bet they reserved some of them as warranty spares.
@ZonicMirage
@ZonicMirage 4 месяца назад
@@emmettturner9452 I appreciate the response, considering how old the video and your comment is. That's cool. I picked up a JP VA4 and had it modded with a reset button bypass. I also got a Mega-CD 1, though it needs work/modding. It was a long while ago, so I honestly don't remember where I read that the VA5 has half-implemented TMSS, but it seemed legit at the time. The full implementation corresponds to VA6's release sometime in 1991-early '92; VA5 never released outside Japan, so that also feels right.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 4 месяца назад
@@ZonicMirage No problem. When I got the notification I actually thought this was a comment I made earlier this year since that’s when I was discussing the VA5 i had just got. :) Perhaps SEGA intended to make TMSS with exceptions for early JP titles so it wouldn’t surprise me if there were some glitched proto-TMSS that is disabled in the VA5 chipset. Previously I just assumed that the corporate directive to develop TMSS came in the middle of the VA5 design process so they designed the board to accommodate both.

There can be lots of other reasons for a blackscreen Megadrive - could be bad traces on the PCB, bad solder points on the cart slot, faulty CPU, faulty WRAM, faulty VDP etc. Worth checking you have the correct voltages coming out of the voltage regulators.

I want to talk about contacts in a key or in this case in the Reset button. My reset button wasn't working so I unplugged the rubber globe around the reset contact button. I cleaned the inside with IPA and Deoxit and then I tried again the reset button, but it didn't work. Then I used a "Lakier grafitowy" kit that I bought time ago that uses graphite, but after applying it and leaving it in the sun to dry for several hours it didn't work. So I just cutted a tiny piece of desoldering copper wire and I glued it there. Now the reset button is working perfect and I think that it will work there forever now ;)

Early Mega Drives don't have the license screen when you turn it on. It was an attempt to copy protect their systems. From what I have read it didn't take much to get around it. I think only a few games don't work with that protection. Do you know which version of the Mega Drive was meant to be the "best"?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 10 лет назад
I am not sure which is meant to be the best tbh. I think they vary, for example this RGB version gives a fanstatic picture but I prefer the sound from the VA4. Yes, the license message was an attempt to stop people manufacturing and selling their own games - ie. bypassing Sega. I think it failed ultimately though as people found a way of disabling it (I could be wrong though).
@StRoRo
@StRoRo 10 лет назад
I think the copy protection was as simple as having the string SEGA in certain parts of ROM.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 10 лет назад
Not sure, I do know that the 'Licensed by Sega' message pops up regardless of the contents of the ROM - they did this for legal reasons, ie. if the message shows when you aren't licensed, then in theory you are claiming to be licensed when you aren't - that was how they took people to court. I think ultimately it failed in the legal system though.

You say that you "oiled" the volume pot and also the switch behind it. I cleaned with Deoxit the volume and I also applied the same grease you use to use to the plastic rails, but it doesn't work perfect. I'm scared about using oil, can you tell what did you do exactly?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 5 лет назад
I used a tiny bit of WD40 on a cotton bud and wiped very carefully over the track. The pots on these can fail over time - only solution then is to swap it out. Technically you can achieve the same result with IPA on a cotton bud. The problem is the surface of the resistive trace wears off.

Recently I've been searching for information on Mega Drive/Genesis OEM SCART cables. I found an article that showed how to modify the French RGB cable to work with PAL and NTSC TVs. Apparently the cable uses a unique type of sync designed as a workaround because SECAM TVs didn't use a composite signal thus making sync-on-composite impossible. The article is in French, but I was able to use Google Translate to read it. Here is a link to the article: www.segakore.fr/index.php/2004/08/07/mega-drive-modifiez-votre-cable-rgb-fr-vers-pal-ntsc#.WWBj4IpumRt

@eddytowers
@eddytowers 7 лет назад
+GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods I see. The article does mention problems caused with that 32x because of the lack of composite, but doesn't go into detail. A French model of the 32x does exist. I'm unsure if it is a model unique to France. You might be able to answer a question I have. Will a Mega Drive II Scart cable work with a model 1 console using the "model 1-to-model 2" 32x conversion cable?

I've also got a French RGB model, VA4 main board but I get a black screen and no sound on headphone jack. Sometimes I've got a constant glitched sound but it's really rare. I've cleaned thoroughly the cartridge connector and tightened the pins to no avail. However, I don't see the resistor on the M68000 leg and there's no visible corrosion on the solder points or pcb tracks (there's some on the EXT connector). Do you have any suggestions?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 8 лет назад
+Consolethinks Most importantly with the French RGB model - it needs a different cable (the adapteur RVB in another of my vidoes). There's a difference in wiring regards the csync signal I think. You can mod your VA4 RGB model with a single wire I think, then a standard RGB cable will work. That's probably why you get no video. If you do have a fault, blank screen can be quite difficult sometimes - could be a problem RAM, possibly the VDP chip. Could also be the video encoder, in fact that's the first thing I would suspect. If sound is there that means the CPU is OK, and the Z80 is OK, and if you can leave a game running with music going for a period of time without issue (say on Sonic), then it would appear to be just a video problem.
@Consolethinks
@Consolethinks 8 лет назад
Is there even a video encoder in a VA4 RGB variant? I thought they removed it because Sega thought it was completely useless in the SECAM region. And like I said in my first post, I don't get any sound (well rarely I've got one note hangs...) so that means even the CPUs have the possibility of being broken... on the weekend, I might check out the traces but I don't have high hopes for it. I even reflowed the solder points (though I didn't see any of them being dry but I also was desperate). It might be even cheaper just to get another Megadrive... sigh... oh and the screen flickers when I turn on the console but I don't know if that's the correct cable or not for the system but at least I ordered it from a French reseller (even though I even had to bend 2 pins to fit on the DIN plug...)
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 8 лет назад
Hmmm, you might be right, but I thought there was - but just no modulator? You still need to do a mod because the composite sync isn't sufficient for most TV's and the RGB levels need boosting also, but I did get it working without the adapter by just doing a mod to the pinout, which I think I mentioned in one of my Megadrive videos there.
@Consolethinks
@Consolethinks 8 лет назад
You are right! There is a Sony encoder chip in there, I just did not notice it because it's under the heat sink. I didn't remove the heat sink because I wanted to test the board safely. But I still doubt that that would be the problem as the system does not produce any sound either (I still hear the usual analogue noise when I turn it on though, so the circuit and maybe even the Yamaha chip is fine). As I don't have much equipment (mostly soldering stuff, and I only have a multimeter to analyse things... no logic probe or oscilloscope...), it might be better to just buy another MegaDrive but I really wanted to get this one working...

It's probably just the slot needs cleaning. Fold some paper 2 or 3 times, wet the edge of the paper with IPA - insert and remove the folded paper into the cart slot. You need to make sure the paper feels like its gripping the cart pins, but not too wide that its hard to get in and out of the slot, so some experimentation in the number of folds will be required. If the power light doesn't come on - It could also be the power supply.

Have you tried different carts - do they all give a black screen? You could measure the voltage coming out the 7805 to make sure the logic has 5v supplied. Beyond that, if the cart slot is not the problem then you must be looking at a fault - could be a faulty 68000, VDP, RAM or anything really. At that point you really need to get a scope or logic probe onto it to try and trace bus activity, check reset line and make sure clocks are OK etc.

I have indeed tried different carts, also the console do turns on but doesn't give me video signal ( and when i plug headphones in the audio port i get static but no sound) i think is a RAM issue or a faulty Z80, it has to be. At this point i´m aiming to the chips as the problem. I don´t have a second console to salvage part or do troubleshooting but hey...i had to try, thanks for replying and be so kind to answer my comment. have a great day.

Very interesting, that in the space of 2 weeks between that being made and mine, they must have sorted out what that resistor was doing. I think mine went through some sort of quality testing as a number of the chips have coloured wax crayon on it. I have owned this from new and never opened it.

Hehe! Did you need to do the mod for the 32x then? Removal of those 2 caps?

Don't know yet. I haven't got one yet. I would love one though. Soon I hope.

***** I have already seen them. Those are the first ones I watched and where I subbed. I have no idea how work out how to fix things like that.

great stuff, thanks for the informative videos. i have a couple of megadrives that are getting power but have a black screen. Ive cleaned the cart slot and re-soldered the underside of the slot but i still get a black screen. do you have any advice for further troubleshooting? i have a multi-meter too. thanks..

You could measure the voltages produced by the voltage regulators on there - I think there are two? A 7805 and a 7812 perhaps? Check pin 3 on each to make sure you've got 5v on the 7805 and 12v on the 7812 (assuming there is one, I cannot remember). Beyond that, it could be a work RAM fault, a CPU fault or perhaps a faulty VDP or something. You can try headphones to see if you hear any sound at all?

Thanks for the reply. On the board i have "IC BD M5 PAL" with no revision number and the two voltage regulators both say L7805CV. I dont get any sound from the headphones too. When testing the voltage regulators, would i use the metal edge of the motherboard to ground the multimeter's probe?

Use the modulator can, or look around the outer edge of the board - the silver solder covered edge that goes all around the outside is usually ground. Looks like it has 2 x 5v regulators - both should measure 5v on pin 3.

thanks man, im getting 10.2V on pin 1 and 5.1V on pin 3 on both regulators.. the CPU, the Z80 and the RAM appear to be getting 5V, but the VRAM (near the heatsink) are not getting any reading.. any idea how to troubleshoot next?
