Boy o boy do I love me some SEGA! and considering we had 42 games on the earlier released MEGA DRIVE mini... what can they do with this one!
Turns out quite a bit. the full list of 60 games is quite shocking, sure you got a few obvious titles like Earthworm Jim 2, Splatterhouse 2 and Golden Axe 2... but the majority of the line up is made for the hardcore SEGA fan in my opinion... here is a full list of the EUR (PAL) & USA (NTSC) games...

I find the lack of Konami love a disappointment this time around, would have been nice to see Rocket Knight Adventures, Snatcher and Sunset Riders, obviously we know why the English Lunar games could not be on it. But yeah would have also been nice to have Keio Flying Squadron too. But over all I think it is a nice array of games as it goes with some nice bonus games. Gonna love playing the new Space Harrier II/Space Harrier with the Cyber Stick when I get it.

I'm really loving mine. Playing Night Trap in Japanese is a blast! The mini console is powered through a USB and I've found it's only reliable when plugged into the mains. Powering it off a tv or laptop doesn't cut it and it shuts off.

Master System mini with some Game Gear exclusive games added to the lineup would be my ideal for their next system. It's cool to see this system coming out. Mega Drive II was what I had growing up. That said, £105 is a big asking price and I'm fortunate enough to have an original console and everdrive, so I'll give this a miss. It's neat though and should be a decent xmas gift for a few people out there.

I bought one but I have no intention of opening it or playing it. At least for now. Maybe if there's another lockdown the temptation will be too much. I got it this morning and yes the box is tiny at least half the size of the 1st one! I actually thought I'd sent something else by mistake when the package arrived

I'd like to see a Game Gear mini, or perhaps a Sega Arcade mini with several GG games as bonuses. Sad that retro game carts are so expensive online now. I bought a few GG carts months back and whew... not cheap! Even at $20 for some games, that's a lot for some games that arent even considered hard to find.

It would have been better value with some GG and Sega Ms titles. For me, as a casual gamer, it' over priced by £30-40. I do like the improved hardware scaling for some titles.

The new versions of Space Harrier I & II are running on a new "Sega Mark V" hardware spec. Basically, it's a Gen/MD with a beefed-up video chip to support genuine sprite-scaling and do a better job of bringing the Super Scaler arcade experience home. Personally, I find the whole experiment kind of bizarre and drifting too far into alternate history for my taste. I'd rather see an effort made at bringing 32X games into the picture and--if anything--just making souped-up brand new 32X ports of those arcade games instead, because then it'd at least better represent what could be done on actual consumer hardware that already existed for people to actually buy and use. But for what it's worth, I do appreciate the effort in at least building that alternate reality where Space Harrier II wasn't a total disappointment slapdash launch game programmed by people who were literally learning how the MD hardware worked as they made the game. VS Puyo Puyo Sun does have one noteworthy factor going for it for hardcore Puyo fans. The original director of the game still works at Sega and gave some input for this version to tweak some gameplay elements that fans weren't very fond of in the original release. The sun puyos work differently in this version and merge into other puyo when dropped. Can't give a whole lot of insight as to what that actually affects in the grand scheme of things (I generally stick to classic PP2 rules) but it's one of those touches that M2 tends to put into a project that makes it feel like a well-thought-out package and I appreciate that.

@@jamiec2023 Genesis Outrun runs at 20 fps. Arcade Outrun is kind of hard to quantify; it updates the screen every 60 fps, but it usually splits the load by updating the foreground graphics on one frame, then the background graphics on the next frame, then repeat. So even though it's doing "something" at 60 fps, it's probably more accurate to consider it a 30 fps game.

It compliments the original, but in my opinion kills it with the Mega CD games. Shining Force, Ecco games and Final Fight, Robo Aleste etc. Soundtracks are unreal.

It depends if you're looking for mainstream common titles or hidden gems. I have a good chunk of the mini 1 games as cartridges but the mini 2 contains a ton of the rare games on my to-buy list (most are $150+ cartridges). The mini 2 is a smoking deal if you look at it this way 😅

@@Tube2097 Sadly it's not as good as it could have been. Not by a long shot. The Japanese version has far better Sega CD games. Both Lunar 1 and 2 as well as Popful Mail are on the device. Apparently they wanted to bring them out here but couldn't come to an agreement with Victor Ireland of Working Designs. Why? Who knows? But stinkers like Sewer Shark and Night Trap just don't cut it.

@@nmnate I've been selling off chunks of my collection and the funny thing is I just sold my copy of Robo Aliste for $500 and Popful Mail for $800 and Shining Force CD for $300. In that respect this mini is decent but not really a must have item.

@@kellinwinslow1988 I know there are some poor choices in there, but there are also some excellent ones. I'd have swapped out Sewer Shark and Night Trap etc with Road Avenger, Tomcat Alley and maybe some Thunderhawk to name but a few.

I remember the Vectorman games having one of the most interesting methods for a level select cheat, while most Sega titles had you going through the sound test, Vectorman had you blasting the Sega logo itself

Shining Force CD is what convinced me to buy this thing. I see the other games as a nice bonus. Really wish it came with Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side though.

I can't believe they finally re-released Ranger X. A game that most people don't have a clue about and it's so, good. It's just frustrating that it's on such a limited release device and not one of the 500 collections. It's also great to see a Strike game, Silpheed and Shining Force CD

Mega Drive over MD model II in terms of the sound for sure. I agree with you in fact I called that it would be a Master System Mini this time around and my 2nd best guess was a MD Mini II...which actually happened. I think it only makes sense for them to go backwards at this point due to the Semi-Conductor shortages and the cost of making a Saturn/Dreamcast Mini would be too high for the moment. I suspect an SG-1000 Mini is next due to 2023 being it's 40th year for the system so it makes sense, but we sall see perhaps a MK III/Master System could be the next big one.

I'd buy this for the remade Space Harrier 2 alone, if money wasn't an issue right now. I'll probably end up paying too much later. Anyways, I'd prefer more Switch releases rather than miniconsoles. And they've already ruled out making any miniconsole more powerful than the Sega CD. It might as well be the 8-bit line for nostalgic European gamers, but I'm not sure how well that would sell anywhere else. At least M2 would probably create more original titles.

I thought really hard on this one, but I canceled my Amazon order at the last minute. I really needed a couple of more rare Sega CD games for it to be worth it for me (as I still have my original physical collection of games). Had they included a couple of pricier Sega CD games such as Keiko, Snatcher, Popful Mail, Lunar 1&2.. just including two of those games would have made me go on and buy it. I still don’t think it’s an awful list at all however, it just wasn’t quite for me is all.

I had a friend with a Sega Genesis and we used to rent that and play it until we were passing out from exhaustion but I don't know that I would spend the money for this for one game, and I really don't like the fact that it's an Amazon exclusive

I was on the fence about this. I have the original Megadrive Mini hacked. I feel £110 for Megadrive Mini 2 is just too much especially with only one controller. It looks like a nice product and I'd be interested at less than £80.00.

Great review. Amazon delivered mine this afternoon. but I have still yet to get it out of the box. Really looking forward to it and experiencing some of those Mega CD games again - Final Fight and its amazing soundtrack will bring back some fond memories! As for Sega's next mini project. I would absolutely love a Saturn or Dreamcast mini. The games library on both of these underapprecaited machine are awesome, some of which still remian exclusive to these systems. Sega themselves have confirmed both options are currently too expensive to produce, therefore I'm guessing a Master System Mini is the likely direction, which would be no bad thing.

My grandma bought it for me randomly as a gift and I played it so dang much. She loved video games and it broke my heart when she passed in 2009 from cancer.

It's gotta be Saturn next for me, hopefully quickly followed by the Dreamcast. With both the Sega mini's selling out right away, surely Sega won't want to delay future mini's too long, as their riding the nostalgia wave high at the moment. Obviously the other Japanese games company too, are sitting on potential money mountain's with the possible N64,& Gamecube mini's. Any way great show Slopes as always cheers.

Saturn emulation is really quite great at the moment but it does require a reasonably beefy system to play well. I'm not sure they could get the hardware required to do it well at the around £100 price these Mini systems are expected to go for.

Your enthusiasm for this thing is very appreciated. The different sound setup is a nice addition which I would have never expected to be honest. Still thinking about a purchase...honestly, the absence of central light is a downpoint who makes this mini console look like some of the cheap clones you can find on AliExpress, damn!

Id love them to move up to the Sega Saturn. Or even without the fancy plastic, some Virtual On Collections, Obscure but good tittles like Burning Rangers, and maybe revive that series into a co op game to help save buildings from destruction by fire or if the building is lost to save folks like the last one. Fighting Vipers collection, there's a lot of great things that could be done. Kind of like how Capcom needs to step up and release a new Power Stone collection and re visit goodies like TechRomancer.

Got mine today as well. They kinda slightly botched the PAL version though. Sonic CD (EU) and Soleil/Crusader of Centy) run at PAL speeds (50fps) while displaying at 60hz resolution, resulting in juddery scrolling for those games. For Sonic you can chose the US and JP (from system language settings) to get proper 60hz speed. For Soleil/Crusader of Centy you need to choose Chinese for at the system language settings to access a full speed English version. Also, Bare Knuckle III (Streets of Rage III JP Version) has been cut on this release, missing a section of the first stage. Considering that the first PAL MD Mini didn't have these issues I'm slightly disappointed by M2 on this one. Also the filter/scanline option is just as bad as on the MD Mini 1. Besides that it's an alright device. Controller feels great.

They've done such a great job with these, I'd gladly pick up whatever they put out next. Master System would probably be the hardest sell for a general audience, while a Dreamcast mini would likely have the most appeal. Might be a bit tricky with four controllers though. I'd personally love to see a Sega Saturn mini as it's library remains the most inaccessible at the moment. I just hope they continue putting these, or comparable collections out for other consoles.

Psst. You can always mode the first one to add more roms to it. ;) And is some cases the better option, what with Romhacking. It's the only way to fully experience Bare Knuckle 3 (translated) as the versioning the mini is still missing stuff.

Great review! I really loved finally being able to play the Sega Genesis collection on switch for its Bare Knuckle 3 port, but the flicker is rough and a switch controller is not ideal. To get a port by M2 is already worth the price of admission for me. Cheers!

Thanks for the review. I instantly bought one after looking at the games list. Covering some of the more expensive, rare shoot em ups / run n guns was enough for me. I might have to resist immediately busting it out of the box when it arrives so my wife can give it to me for Xmas and we can have a cool holiday blast from the past 😁

I was really back and forth with this. You can't get this in canada and so with shipping and currency exchange its close to $200 CAD. Also noticed a lot of these games can be found on the Genesis Switch collection whereas on the mini 1 you had more iconic licensed options like road rash 2 and Strider. Its a hard ask for almost twice the price of the original mini

I'm in canada as well. I ordered it and cancelled before it shipped. I had it shipping to a friend in the usa. With the exchange rate and the high charge for shipping, I didn't want to send sega the message that I was ok with this. I'm not excited enough about these games that I need to own them.

I disagree with you about that, think it's less than 10 of the 60 games (61 if you count both Space Harrier 1 & 2) on here are also on the Genesis Switch Collection whereas on the original Genesis Mini, only 19 of the 42 games weren't on the Switch Genesis Collection. So there's a lot less recycled stuff you get here compared to the previous one.

As far as what Sega could do next after this new Mini... first is hopefully plenty of production to make sure we don't have to go through horrible resellers to buy one like the NEC PC-Engine aka Turbo GraFX Mini turned into. Second, yes... a Sega Mark III, Master System and SG-1000 Mini all in one with the different shell designs would be awesome because even though it's different hardware, I wouldn't mind owning a SG-1000 shell design Mini that's still a Sega Master System Mini and also include some of the Game Gear exclusives upgraded to Master System level graphics... The harsh reality of the "Sega Saturn Mini" however is that it would cost way more money to make as it will require more development costs and not just a stronger chipset but also a lot more STORAGE SPACE... this is what people keep misunderstanding about complaining that there isn't the later Sega systems... Plus M2 and probably some older game devs might actually want to revise and reprogram some of the old Sega Saturn games and include NEW arcade ports which each one could cost a fortune because these are custom programmed high quality games. That Space Harrier revision port speaks volumes right there... M2 really went the extra mile and knowing them they actually must have written entirely NEW code and we will eventually be shocked when the official ROM Cartridge version is released because it will run on original Sega MegaDrive Genesis hardware...

I have all my Sega consoles hooked up to a GBS Control and a VGA monitor in my living room, with various ODEs and flash carts, but it would be cool as a collectors item - I just wish it had more CD games. And honestly a Saturn mini would really be the insta-buy. I didn't even have one as a kid but love the library, especially the JP/Worldwide releases.

Yeah, we TOTALLY NEED a Master System Mini! That system had so many excellent exclusives and ports on it, most of which were better than their NES counterparts and some of which were even better than the Genesis versions (like Double Dragon)!

Fun fact: Unlike the first one, Sega Europe seem to not be involved with the distribution of the mini II in the region. Both the box and machine list the responsible party as DartsLive Europe. DartsLive being Sega's electronic darts machine company. I guess the numbers of these things being sent here are so low its not worth the main office's time? Might be mistaken but wasnt there word that Genesis mini 2's were being shipped direct from Japan? Sounds like Sega of America didn't want to get involved either if that's the case. I think we're lucky to be getting this in the west at all without having to import. Nice little unit all told. Glad to have stuck with it

They charged my card, now I'm just waiting for mine to ship. By now I understand why Sonic 3 & Knuckles is not on it (and really, these days there are many great ways to play it), but I really wish Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure was on it. Now we've got both Earthworm Jim games; why not Boogerman? I always looked at both series similarly, and they are some of my favorite cross-platform games of the generation. Oh well...

Sonic 3 isn't on there because they spent money doing Sonic Origins Widescreen with extra video scenes and they want you to just buy that. If you buy Sonic Mania though, you'll be able to put that on your mini with Hakchi in the next release.

Gutted that the power button is a slider and not the push type. Other than that excellent little mini 👍🏽 This sits nicely beside my other minis, SNES, PSX and Amiga 500. I hope we get a Dreamcast one day.

Bare Knuckle 3 has a bit of content taken out, though. You may know about the infamous character Ash in the Japanese version that they censored out of Streets of Rage 3. This version, the first level goes straight from the warehouse to the street, skipping the dock section. I get why they did it, but it's kinda a bummer. In the western version the dock is still there with Shiva, so kinda weird they didn't just use that part.

For me it needs A/V or S-Video. 3 A/V ports on the back would cost very little. My Genesis broke and I'm looking to replace and I use CRT. Even a knock off MiniGen I had offered both HDMI and A/V and it cost like $40

12:15 Far as I understand it it's a custom emulator that mimics a MD with added sprite scaling, a sort of "what if" scenario. "A remake of Space Harrier II AND a brand-new Space Harrier port, both built to "Sega Mark V" spec, an imaginary-but-plausible version of the Mega Drive with genuine sprite scaling!"

I'd personally like a Jaguar Mini, maybe with a load of the games issues addressed and given optional tweaks (Doom lacking music, theme park slowing down on larger parks and so on...) 2 Pro controllers, CD games, being homebrew friendly and able to play games with the old cartridges. I know the console is... junk but it was junk I was raised on and I feel its important to preserve even the less successful gaming systems.

The review is... questionable in some regards, it almost seems like it goes too "perfect" in many areas, mini consoles are well known to do weirdly in input lag, and you went "yeah, it's very good!" and that's it. Also, don't put lies on game facts you don't even research properly, and this is the mere reason you are never going to see me checking your channels (which you promoted yourself AT LEAST TWICE IN 5 MINUTES) ever again. -No, Data East NEVER denied the Chelnov thing, it was controversial for SO MANY other things, and you only need to see the original arcade title screen to wonder why, they publicly apologized (The game is still amazing, I must seriously agree on that, go play Chelnov!) -No, Locomotive was NOT a game that was in development for the console, instead, some employees at M2 made this (And Sanrin San-Chan, aka Spatter) on their free time for the MegaDrive by the mere situation they just liked the games a lot, in fact, these were promoted as ideas for ports during the "Sega Ages 3DS" era, but SEGA denied those as they were a bit too niche. -Devi & Pii, yeah, weird game, cancelled game from back in the day from what the official Japanese website mentions -Star Mobile might be one of the most unique puzzle games and I can see you didn't even try to research it properly; it also was a heavily in development game from back in the day but got released publicly until now. All in all, thanks for showing how the international release of the mini is, but I'm going to wait for a proper review, from someone that doesn't attempt to look like a guru of gaming when in reality barely did more than 2 seconds of googling.

I got mine yesterday and found pretty noticeable sound lag on Desert Strike and Sonic CD stutters, especially when you pick the EU version (Sonic CD as part of Sonic Origins on Nint. Switch plays so much better than Sonic CD on MD Mini 2, but that is not emulated afaik). I compared Desert Strike to the same game running on a MiSTer FPGA using the same gamepad and TV in game mode. Recording the audio with a smartphone from both systems and then comparing them in Audacity, using the sound of me hitting the gamepad button as a reference point, showed a difference of ~9 frames later audio playback (~150ms) on the Mini 2. This measurement surely was not done professionally and the overall sound delay is a combination of input lag and audio lag, but it is there and it is easily noticeable when you compare. In the end it is a Mini. Against FPGA or original hardware it can only lose, but I feel M2 could have once again done better in terms of audio lag. The average Joe who does not compare or test these Mini Systems properly will not notice and while I find the games still well playable they are all for sure more fun without the extra lag.

Great video mate! I love the game selection they went with for this one, seems like a real labour of love for all involved. I own the original Mega Drive Mini so the price of this one is a bit much for me (sitting at $270 AUD on Amazon as I speak!) but I'm still glad it exists at least! I'd be somewhat interested in a Master System Mini, but it would need to be either absurdly cheap or absolutely packed with games to really get me over the line. I'm definitely more of a Saturn Mini hopeful at the moment, especially given how rarely I see OG Saturn stuff here in Australia!

Space harrier 2 looked like it was the ported arcade version in the yakuza series and yes, the mega drive did play it... I would highly recommend using rapid fire to play it (six button mega drive)

I skipped out on this just because personally I didn't find the roster of games very interesting but very happy to hear good things about it. And yes Sega Lord x basically said the same thing about a Master System mini it would be cheap in terms of production because you wouldn't need anything too powerful to play those little guys and you wouldn't even need that much storage as well
