The fiercest competition Nintendo ever had came from SEGA.

I could explain the schizophrenia within Sega. Originally Sega was a company founded with American money using labor in Japan to build arcade machines whose main test audience were American military warriors serving in Japan. One of the original East meets West companies. Before they were a Japanese company, they were bought by the same parent company, Gulf and Western, who owned Paramount Pictures. During the American era they made such classics as Carnival Zaxxon, Turbo, Subroc, Congo Bongo, Pengo. Also because Paramount and Sega were under the same corporate head they were easily able to make the game Star Trek for the arcade and later for the Colecovision, 5200, and 2600. Maybe there's some pre-existing clause in Sega's contract that gave Paramount an advantage when negotiating for the rights to release the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Maybe Paramount has a certain percentage loyalty bonus that other studios must overcome if they want to beat Paramount in an auction for a Sega property to be released in linear visual media (movies, TV, etc.). In the '90s Paramount didn't care much about Sonic the Hedgehog because they were separated by the crash of '83 and DIC was interested heavily in the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon. So much show they made a more juvenile slapstick weekday version and a more serious dystopian Saturday morning version. Before they made the SG 1000 in Japan, The Americans of Sega tended not to want to make their own system instead they were out-licensing their products to mainly Coleco for the Colecovision versions of those games, and handling the 5200 and 2600 versions by themselves as an Atari third party developer even though Atari had no say in who could develop for Atari game consoles because of the Atari versus Activision lawsuits, and didn't regain it until the landmark Atari versus Mystique court case, where Mystique tried to make snuggle games for the 2600. Just in time for Nintendo to make exclusivity clauses. The Console War was mainly run by the American departments of Sega. The Americans of Sega have seen the history of the 2600, the Intellivision Plimpton ads, The game ads of one third party 2600 company targeting another third party 2600 company by offering a better version of a similar game. Instead of two armies, those of Nintendo and Sega, You had one off mercenary commercial shots attacking a particular other third party of the same system in direct competitive ads. Actually Japan did not incorporate Console War theory in their commercials until the Americans successfully did it with the Genesis. They said, "you do not mention the competition, especially if they're in a stronger position." Probably the Americans that Sega looked at all these console war ads and said "To Pfft... Amateurs." Two examples of console war commercials that made them think that is the Coleco "Sorry Atari" commercial going against the 5200, and the Atari "Not This Pac-Man" commercial, saying the 5200 Pac-Man could only be played on the 5200. Probably the ColecoVision influenced Sega's American contingent into adding endless add-ons thinking it helped the Colecovision. That's why the only time Sega was ever not the last place system in Japan locally was the one time that Sega was giving America the proverbial middle finger by catering most of their games to the Japanese audience and pulling out of America early for the Saturn. Finally in 2000 Sega said the last chance for Sega as a console maker was to cater to the American audience that gave Sega a fighting chance as the only market where the Dreamcast was competitive.

Yeah, the two sides couldn't get it together. They had a good product on their hands, but the focus wasn't there.

Gensis was only popular in the united states. Genesis controlled half of the market in the United States. When the genesis declined in the United States many Genesis players went over the Playstation brand. What hurt Sega was stupid add ons like Sega cd and 32x where snes used enhancement chips for 3Desque 32 bit style gaming.

The Genesis (MegaDrive) was more popular in England than the SNES was. Why it's not really mentioned is that Home Computers were the main thing over here. The PlayStation 1 is what converted the majority to home consoles
