I alternate between the Alpinist and the Khaki King. Both winners. The Alpinist is much more impressive in person.

I do love the alpinist. It just feels so ”Un-Seiko” with the Sapphire glass and date matching the dial. A very special piece I’m happy I picked up.

Date wheel is black. Dial is green. I think this is a lazy, epic fail by Seiko and should be fixed in the next Alpinist model. Date wheels should either match the dial or match/balance the opposing indice (i.e. 9 o'clock).

The Hamilton is solid as a rock. I own this Hamilton. It happened that it fell on a stone floor from about 1, 6 m height. Nothing happened than a scratch and the watch still ticking way precisely. It holds the time like a quarts watch. By the way the scratch was polished out easyly

I have both… The Hamilton is a more recent acquisition. I agree with you on all points and the plus and minuses of both watches. I do believe the finishing is superior on Hamilton. I believe the Hamilton wears better, And his suited for all strap types, particularly nato straps. The biggest scrape I have with the alpinist (and with most Seiko’s for that matter), is how thick the watch is. It sits high on the wrist and wears terrible on even a single pass nato/Zulu strap. Thanks for the great review!

Owned both. Hamilton Field Khaki wins. The movement are almost the same and both are easy to have maintained, but the ETA 2824-2 has a higher beat frequency and smoother seconds hand sweep (28800 vs 21600). Hamilton - 1, Seiko - 0. Both have Sapphire glass, but the Hamilton comes with a sapphire crystal display back so you can see the movement, which is nice to do occassionally. Hamilton - 2, Seiko - 0. Both are easy to read/tell time. Hamilton - 3, Seiko - 1. Seiko's dial is more beautiful, Hamilton's is generic. Hamilton - 3, Seiko - 2. Hamilton leather strap is just WAY better than Seiko's uncomfortable and oddly colored leather strap. Hamilton - 4, Seiko - 2. Hamilton Field Khaki you can buy around $350. Seiko was selling at $400 before it was discontinued - now it's selling at $500. Hamilton wins in cost. Hamilton - 5, Seiko - 2. Seiko's internal compass/bezel has extra utility that Hamilton does not. Hamilton -5, Seiko - 3. FINAL SCORE: Hamilton - 5 points, Seiko - 3 points. I still recommend both, but Hamilton is the better choice between the two on paper. Ultimately depends on how much you love that Alpinist dial.
@shipmate3577

Good point. Final score should be Hamilton - 5, Seiko - 3.

But the movement has also just 21.600 bph same frequenz like the saiko. So they can give 80h of powerreserve. I love this hamilton. Timless and understatement but also elegant👍🏻

I own a 42 mm Hamilton Khaki Automatic just like the one you reviewed. I also own several Seiko's so I do have positive comments for both brands. I prefer the Hamilton Khaki for it's vintage, timeless looks. My Hamilton is the most accurate of any of the automatics in my collection. It has the H10 movement and the accuracy is anywhere from -1 to +6 seconds per day depending on the usage. The Hamilton is also much more accurate than any of my Seiko automatics when just left on a watch winder. The Hamilton's leather band is the best leather band I have ever experienced in my 50+ years wearing wristwatches. Most people would never wear the Seiko Alpinist for scuba diving so the difference in water resistance is strictly a talking point, doesn't make any difference for 99% of the users. Thanks for your excellent comparison.
@dustycups
@dustycups 5 лет назад
I think the difference in water resistance ratings is much more than just a talking point. There’s a common misconception that 100m resistance rating means it can withstand 100m depth - it actually means it may only resist light immersion. 100m does not give full confidence for surface swimming let alone snorkelling. A 30m watch will barely resist gentle splashing under a tap. 200m is ok for surface swimming, and the Alpinist here has a screw down crown but the compass crown is not, so I’m not sure I’d trust it.

The Alpinist would be my choice. It has, like a chronograph, a feature I'd rarely use. But it has a reliable in house movement, and a more refined aesthetic. My only problem with it is that green is my least favorite color. Had the non-green been more available, I'd probably be wearing one now. Let's hope Seiko has something special in store for a replacement, and not a downgrade, like they did with the Cocktail Time.
@shipmate3577
@shipmate3577 6 лет назад
Seiko will likely come out with a blue and/or black dial with the 4R35/36 movement or bump the price up to $800 range if it keeps the 6R15. Seiko is making the 6R15 movement series for the ~$1000 watches and the 4R35/36 movement series for their $300-$500 watches.
@ХристоМартунковграфЛозенски
I think Seiko has also an "Alipinist-like" model with a compass again and a sand/cream dial, as well as a model with black dial.

So glad you're back to making Videos old Friend. I have the Longines Heritage Military 1938 which has 40mm. I am very interested in getting a Hamilton but I think 42 would be to large for my wrist. Sadly there are no vendors nearby where I can try that out. So I need to check that out online, but if I find a good 40mm khaki model I'll go with that. Haven't looked too deep in the Hamilton Catalogue as of yet.

Online I found 1!! AD in Vienna that carries the Brand. Kind of funny for a Swiss Company as we are a neighbouring country. But I plan to drive there in April. It's pretty far. But I rather check it out in person than Blind buy. That price is a bit too much just to spend for a review and then being stuck with a watch I might not like. I've been looking forward to this for a while but never treated myself to it, so I think it's finally time. Thanks for the info.

I think my Alpinist is such a unique piece. I also find it seems to wear more like a 40mm. The smallish 38mm size is something that concerned me but once I had it on my wrist it was a non issue. Hamilton for me. Never really saw the charm of the Alpinist, especially on the original strap. Looks decent on a leather NATO. But the standard brown with the green and gold and silver, it's just too much. And the green and gold looks a bit "old man in the cabin" look. The Hamilton looks tough and military-esque. It's clean and to the point. But I just really like Hamilton's aesthetics.

I currently own both. I personally feel the Seiko (Seiko 6r15 equipped) is a much better watch than the Hamilton. None of my sub $1,000 Hamilton’s perform like my sub $600 Seiko’s. Anymore I just find Hamilton’s boring-I’ve sold off all but 3. My Alpinist and SARG009 are definitely keepers.

Seiko any day, everyday. I have several Swiss made watches with ETA movements and 2 in particular have been JUNK. Both 2824 movements that simply stopped working. Both were taken/sent for service and both have failed again. I will never buy another watch with an ETA movement. I have several Seiko watches now including the Alpinist and A Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT. My Alpinist is my daily wear and the Grand Seiko is my weekend out and about watch (I am hard on watches at work and don't want to bang up a $5,200 watch doing my job). I am a true Seiko fan at this point and believe they make the best watches for the money bar none. p.s. My guess the only thing Swiss made on the Hamilton is the movement. The case was likely of Asian production. p.p.s. The Alpinist was made for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) and not meant for international sale. Thus you must buy one directly from Japan. Any watch aficionado knows that JDM watches are made to a much higher quality than those meant for export and the Alpinist shows this in spades. Also in general Japanese folks are physically smaller than Americans and Europeans. The Alpinist was made for the JDM.

The Alpinist does not have a day as well as date complication. It does not have quick-snap functionality in the watch movement. The movement is not as accurate as that the adapted ETA - I know I have two watches with the alpinist movement and two watches with this same adapted ETA and the Hamiltons are far more accurate. The quality of the case is superior in terms of precision in the Hamilton - the internal bezel of the Aplinist is often a little wonky. The hands of the Hamilton are more precise with the second hand running exactly along the track right out to the indices where the seconds are marked. The watch strap with the Hamilton is superb, one of the best leather straps I have ever had on a watch in this price bracket and vastly superior to that useless tat that comes with the Alpinist. It also comes with a superb signed buckle - to put the Alpinist on an equivalent quality strap it will cost at least 100 pounds to get a top quality Hirsch. The Alpinist is actually more expensive by some margin in the UK as it requires importing from the US or Japan. In total around 200 pounds more than the Hamilton. Absolutely no contest - the Hamilton wipes the floor with it. As for Seiko, i'm a big fan, but am far happier with my Sarb 033 and Sarb 035 as well as my classic SKX 007. Alpinist is an ok watch. The dial looks lovely, but it has far too many drawbacks and there are superior options in this price range. In fact for around 200 pounds more money, in the UK it is possible to get the Hamilton Interstella watch and that wipes the floor with the Alpinist on every conceivable level.
@shipmate3577
@shipmate3577 6 лет назад
ETA 2824-2 is a better movement in my opinion. They are both about the same... however the beat frequency of the ETA 2824-2 is 28,800 while the Seiko 6R15 is 21,600. This creates a smoother second hands sweep, which is pleasing to the eye. If this didn't matter, then ask why does Grand Seiko brag about the "Hi-Beat" 36,000 and Spring Drive movements' smooth second hand sweep actions?
@elv3a424
@elv3a424 6 лет назад
Shipmate That's something to consider. Of course, a lower beat rate causes less wear to the movement... But I agree, the higher rate is nice. I still prefer the in-house movement of the Seiko. I think it adds a lot to the piece, whereas the Hamilton has the "same-old" ETA 2824-2. Both are nice movements.
@logannewcome

The catherdral hands are the only redeeming quality of the Alpinist IMO. Definitely more character to be had with it, but character and classic field watches have never been partners. I personally would go with a HEMEL for this niche. Looks like a field watch should like the Hamilton, but with more merits for less money.

Clever738 can't see it myself, the Alpinist is my daily wear,(admittedly I mostly wear black!) can be dressed up or used as a beater due to its 200m water resistance & diashock & spron mainspring, whereas the Hamilton is too plain (IMO) to be dressed up & lacks the WR for me to be a daily wear. Either way, both very cool watches & it'd be boring if we all liked the same thing! Cheers 👍

Good video with valid points. I’m a collector and love Seiko, but sold my Alpinist because it looked like a woman’s watch to me. Wearing the 42 mm Hamilton on bracelet currently.

Alpinist is the winner because it has screw down crown plus more interesting history.

I recently bought the updated Hamilton Khaki brown dial in 42 mm, with the date left of the 3. So far, I love it. It’s gaining about 2-3 seconds a day

I have 2 very similar watches, the 38mm version of this Hamilton, and the black version of this Alpinist (SARB015.) IDK if the movement is different in the larger Khaki, but my watch has an ETA 2824 that definitely would not be able to make it through a weekend off the wrist. I feel like its 36 hours at best (although I haven’t timed it.) It has supplanted the Seiko as my daily wear though because its so comfortable on the wrist.

Honestly, the dial alone wins it. The green sunburst dial with the cathedral hands and the unique font of the arabic numerals wins it for me. Plus, 200Bar water resistance and a great 38mm size? The Hamilton is a great watch...but the functionality, durability, and design of the Alpinist wins hands down. I don't know if anyone, who had $500 to throw away, wouldn't pick the Alpinist if they knew something about watches.

The Hamilton looks more "grown up" and would make a good impression down at the clubhouse.

555 Gear Ya, im just bitter. Couple years ago i got my wife a tissott T-race. It always had some kind of problem but finally got bad enough we sent it in for repair. They wanted slightly less than the cost of a new one so ww just had them send it back. I have a couple hamiltons myself and have had them both fixed at high cost. I have the frogman replica and the touchscreen t-touch and the only one i really like is the frogman but its been expensive! Won't be buying any more in the future. I'd recommend looking at Ball watches! That'll be my next watch.
