Great new seiko diver just released. Seiko is evolving and it shows with this model. Big thanks to Bruce Williams for lending this for me to look at.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K4ASZzf1iWY.html
I just picked mine up last week. I love it. I have 6.5 wrist and it wears well! I paid 790.00 at an Ad. It’s my first seiko and I love it. Also i went in looking for the new SPB and i liked this one more for the dial and hands.
I bought one used two months ago for about $500. It's a beautiful watch and I wear it more than my black bay 58 and I friggin love that watch. It fits as a dressy diver with a larger size. It's shiny and catches light well. Looks great on my seven inch wrist.
I jumped straight into the Seiko pool with this watch and I must say Ive been impressed. This has me wanting to go up to a Marine Master or (eventually) a Grand Seiko. This watch looks like any other watch but in certain lighting or from certain angles that Zaratsu polished line and the case lines just pop and make you stare at it. Ive had much more expensive watches that arent finished this nicely. And maybe I got lucky because my alignment is perfect and the movement has been very accurate.
Love that Seiko used a thick clasp and sapphire crystal (about gawdam time). I also really like the hands. However, wish it was 41mm wide-13mm thick-49mm lug2lug, had a black date wheel with white font for a more subtle look. I'm waiting for the price to get down to $500... which is where you find a lot of other watches with sapphire crystal, good clasp, and even better bezel movement, and signed crown.
Seiko people told me that the bezel of the SLA017 is topped with a thin layer of sapphire glass, the same as in the SBGE 201. I see that the SBDC 051/053 also has the similar bezel, but, perhaps of lower quality from the look of it, but, it's still incredible at this price point. It's like the different quality of ceramic in the GS and Seiko. Even within Seiko, I observed the difference in quality. The Astron has very high-quality ceramic as in the Transocean bezel. You can differentiate this from, say, the ceramic in the Monster. A good ceramic does not crack or scratch easily. My wife has a watch with the ceramic bracelet which she uses for rough wear. In 10 years, it's still as shiny as the first day. Not a single scratch on it.
Lots complaining about the size, but I tried it on and it wears a touch smaller, like Grand Seikos do. Lovely watch, and cheaper for me as I live in Japan;)
I owned both this watch and the Sumo . They are both good , but I think this SBDC051 is the better watch . The sumo isnt in my collection anymore , this one is .
I’d love to start the groundwork on a nickname for this future classic. I’ve been calling it the “ modern mas”, but what about “ ronin”? What do you think?
Got mine this week. What a classy watch. I prefer wearing it on a Nato band, the original is a little uncomfortable. Understated classy and wears great on my small wrist. This watch needs a COOL NICK NAME.
@@samwatkins9200 Wear it every day at work, and the beach on week ends. Only time it's off is when I'm in bed. Has never missed a beat. After owning many Seiko's, I now own one watch only.
I was really hyped for this one until I saw that the hands are painted. I like hands with polish/ brushed "metal" finish on them. Maybe I wish still go for it.
love the skx and the monsters by seiko. but it is hard to justify buying a watch which is 5x the price of skx/monster while still missing signed crown, ceramic bezel, perfect alignment
They did one thing that goes unnoticed on all reviews on this model, the dial isn't really a "matte" dark grey, but it has some sort of flecking, so it looks quite nice. The SBDC061/SPB077 doesn't have any flecking on its dial, its just a Flat/Matte dark grey, which kind of looks a bit mismatched under bright light with the lacquered bezel!
Random, i am your fan. I listen to you and Bruce Williams to buy all my seiko watches. Only that i buy them from Yamato Nadesiko. It's amost always cheaper than other stores, and sometimes by quite a lot. And, it provides global warranty. The customer service fantastic. I just write to him for any of the watches I want, even antique ones, and I always get the best price. The money I saved could buy me another few more seiko watches.
I agree! Monster is still in first place ...but this one has moved ahead of the Sumo. I got the Blue one -the bezel is little more interesting with the reflective blue. Great watch and review!
Thank you for the Review. I like the watch a lot, but I fear it is too big for me. My SKX is my biggest watch and my sinn 104 the watch thats fit me best. But I dont get the pint why not to buy this watch as first Seiko. When somebody like the look and the better quality of the watch, why should he buy a Turtle or SKX instead?
A new Kurashikku has just being released, the SBDC 055, a special Padi Edition. This has a blue wave dial. Even more stunning than it's predecessors. At 700 USD, those who have not bought the earlier ones are spoiled for choice. Cheers!
A question, did you or Bruce remove links on this watch? I see from the video the bracelet it taken out as far as it come go on the micro adjustments, I have an 8" wrist and own the SBDC053 and want to purchase the OEM bracelet for it, but am unsure if it will fit?
I love, love, love the looks of this one (but I too wish it was a bit smaller) but I can't really justify this one; I already have a Third Gen Monster and my grail is a Marinemaster 300 and this one will have to be a purchase down the line possibly. I just want to throw this one on the MM300 waffle and roll with the "re-interpreted classic" vibe.
I just agreed to purchase a like new model for $540 locally (private sale) but I havent put my hands on it yet. For $540, is it a good buy? Ive had a 007 and an Orient Ray, but other than that no other Seikos.
62mas reissue SLA017 39.8mm. Really a dive watch should be between 40-50 mm. IMO smaller than 40 is not diver spec. The original 62mas was 37mm. I have a 7.75" wrist and love anything between 36-40mm. I just don't like a lot on my wrist as I am active and practical. I found the orange monster to be beautiful but it's wrist presence was nuclear. I eventually sold it mint.
I am also wondering that as I have the blue 053. A bit difficult to match it with the leather strap. I'll probably either end with the black vintage leather or the waffle rubber strap
Lovely watch; they pretty much nailed the vintage aesthetic; shame about the size though, not in absolute terms, but in terms of giving it the 'right' vintage look, IMO.
You are right - 43mm is too much, by 1mm. Possibly. 42mm is great as long as there is 22mm between the lugs. Like Steinhart-proper proportions, although on the large side. A 42mm+ with a 20mm bracelet looks disproportional. Awesome watch though. Would be better, by a lot, with 42mm or less. Preferably a 40mm like God and Rolex intended. With proper lug width. And, screwed links. I'd be in for sure with that. A 40mm with 20mm lugs, or 40mm to 42mm with 22mm lugs. Do that.
Nice vid man. I think this watch is gorgeous, it just does it for me. Contemplating buying it, I wear a srp turtle well, do you think this watch wears a lot bigger than a turtle. My wrist is a hair under 7 inches. Your wrists on video look way bigger than 7 1/8.
Too many strong competitors at this price range (Squale 1521, Marathon tsar, Hamilton Khaki Frogman, Steinhart Ocean 500 Titanium, Christopher Ward C60 Trident). I want to like this watch, but it's too big for my 7" wrist. Wish it was 41" and $500-600. It's only worth $100-$150 more than the Sumo ($450). I'm a proud owner of a Seiko Monster and Seiko fanboy, but I'll wait a year.
Some of them I have not tried. I pretty much agree with you though. So many amazing options that are 40-41mm. Wonder what the overall sweet spot is for most? I would guess from most I see it's 40-41mm
I read that 43mm is currently to most sold size; but with watch collectors - the size is smaller between 40-41mm. The average Joe buying a Fossil wants 43mm. Watch companies are "companies" and they need to sell product to stay in business.
A wach at this price point should have a more accurate movement than the 6R15. That movement is not great regulated. Compare that to the accuracy of the movement in your Steinhart.
