Seiko PADI every single day of the week. My workhorse. Day/Date, gorgeous dial and that Seiko heritage. Well past the honeymoon phase with mine as well and absolutely love it.
Could't decide which one to keep either. I really hope Seiko will no longer hesitate to provide the SKX with the 4r36 movement. Then it would be the perfekt entry level diver. Nice clasp on the Padi.
The mistake was buying the exact same design in the padi. The padi has some exciting colors and flavors the reason why the padi is on your wrist is because of your love for the skx but I can sese the reason to switch to the black dial. The black dial has a different feel.
Hey Bruce! I agree with you 109%. I sold my 009j to buy the padi. The turtle is uber comfortable even on my 6.75 inch wrist, but if it was 42mm there would be no contest. And I too was thinking about the 173 to replace my 009. Still love that case and it's different enough to have both.
Awesome review Bruce on both watches. The 009 is iconic and a Seiko legend. The Padi Turtle is amazing as well. My thoughts are I wish Seiko would eventually use the same movement in the 009 that they use in the turtle. Don’t get rid of the 009 , keep it it looks awesome and amazing 😉 👍🏻
I am keeping both. You are right that the SKX is more comfortable to wear but the PADI dial is more beautiful and I like the manual wind feature on the PADI.
Love both of those. As a matter of fact, I'm wearing my SKX 009 today in the same configuration as yours. IF and I say "IF" I had to get rid of one I would also get rid of the SKX...but for now I'm keeping both. ;o) Just like I had two SKX 007 - one that I've modded with a Yobokies coin edge bezel and his SS GTM Bezel insert. I kept my SKX 007J stock. Just saying you could always keep the SKX009 and mod it to differentiate it from the PADI
Bruce Williams do it!! It doesn't cost much and completely changes the look of your watch - here is mine. i41.photobucket.com/albums/e276/lalbert/6B6C210B-EC6C-43DE-A65F-0785481025A2_zpsgb2gqwpm.jpg
I had a similar predicament. For me I kept the SKX009 and keep it on a navy blue NATO strap and I have the SRP777 which alternates between a Nato and the stock rubber strap (and maybe soon a leather strap as well). This really gives each watch it's own place in my collection.
I had the exact 2 same watches (though non PADI version of the T) and came to the exact same conclusion. I sold the SKX. One month later I sold the turtle and bought another SKX. Now I'm selling the SKX as I bought an Orient SD. This is while saving for a Sub-C. I'm driving myself nuts. I bet I'll sell the Sub-C in a month. I just can't find the perfect watch. I wish I could go to a watch councillor to find out what I'm really looking for.
I think the turtle' s case is awful. The blue dial though, that is gorgeous. But I will try to get my hands on the gorgeous blue dial of the Seiko Trans Ocean and upgrade the SKX
love my skx009j. perfect size and absolutely love the matte navy blue dial. interested in the padi but at 45mm, i think its too big even though i could easily wear it with my 7 3/8" wrist. i'd like to check out the padi in person to see how it really fits as 40mm is starting to become my ideal size with 42mm being the upper limit. keep the great vids coming!
Your selling a watch that loses approx a second per day? I would keep it, I honestly think they will go up in value some day. Besides, you could keep it and pass it down to one of your children or a niece/ nephew. The great thing about the 009 is that it is designed for both male/female. Keep up the great video"s.
That is unusual, you own a Seiko one-off with performance in the upper tier of Swiss COSC standard chronometry, and you sound almost nonchalant about flogging it because it might gather too much dust, wtf! You should take your medicine then lie down and wait until the blood goes back into your head.
I was going to buy an Skx when it was still 300ish but I was 15-16 and didn’t have the money for it now it’s 700-800 for an skx on Amazon new so the padi line is looking like the best option for my budget
Hi seiko fans and happy new year i think seiko must bring back samurai model, maybe one of the best looking divers ever, not only limited edition that will come after 1-2 months...love my turtle and kinetic diver very durable both.
Get the 173. A lot more character. I agree with you about the size. Tried the turtle twice and flipped it twice before wearing it out because it was just too big.
Bring back an updated version of Skx line, sapphire crystal, new movement, ceramic bezel, higher price like Seiko has been doing. It would sell like hotcakes!
No surprises there... It's more expensive. Depends where you live also. It's a clunky fat case indeed... Not sleek as the SKX... bigger. lmao. Yep, Jubilee by Strapcode is awesome. I rock it on my SKX007. Of course when PADI is a cool thing and its a newer watch, better movement with the features. 4R36. Yep, so comfortable. and 43mm awesome size. It is more versatile
considering your skx just losing/gaining +1 sec per 24 hours, I would just go buy a new black bezel insert, as you dont know how accurate new purchase will be. changing it is VERY easy.
I have an srp777 with a strap for about a year and now i m thinking to buy an skx009k2 with a jubilee I have a moon watch omega speedmaster and a tag hever but the seiko you wear it everywhere with out any fear or compromise especially in the water in summer Like the movie All is lost :)
I think the SKX case is sleeker looking at it directly face-on, but from any other angle I think the turtle case has more balanced lines and a more interesting "figure". Just different really. The sunburst blue dial is also a pretty big deal :P
Sorry to ask about this but I want to buy a ORIENT TRITON RA-EL0002L00A and a see this and I get confused which one is better. The price are almost same.
This place ships to Denmark, but I don't know if you'd have any customs costs: www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_SRPA21_Automatic_Dive_Watch_p/srpa21.htm www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_SKX009K1_Watch_p/skx009k1.htm SKX is $200, PADI is $395. I checked the shipping to a random location in Copenhagen (the National Museum) and it was $15. If you would prefer to use the site that you linked to, I would say that the PADI is a better value than the SKX because it has a hacking and hand winding movement. The PADI also comes on a decent bracelet, and a good bracelet for the SKX costs around $60-80.
It's legit, I only recommended it because I bought 2 SKX's and 3 Orients from them without any issues (they are a Seiko AD). I did just notice that they said that they can't ship the PADI to Europe in the description. The description for the SKX doesn't say that it can't ship to Europe, so I would assume it can.
C'mon Man! Keep it. I've got 5 divers with black faces (3 on Bond NATOs), and 1 pepsi (red NATO). All of the black divers look the same... until you take a good look at them. I've bought the same suit in navy, and in gray... 3 times over the years. I've got 4 navy blazers, the styles a bit different on each. Keep the Turtle and the 009. Then go get a 007 while you still can.
The jubilee improves the Turtle, but the SKX case shape is just way better than the Turtle. It juts looks too chunky for my like the Turtle. Must say I'm a massive fan of the SKX009K2, its such a cool looking watch for the price, but again its the jubilee that lifts its also imo.
These 2 are phenomenal watches, how do Seiko do it?? Had 6 months of PADI on my wrist, and I cannot fault it against my Jack Heuer (80th) Carrera. I am still waiting for the mainspring to explode or the escapement to catch fire so I can justify its ridiculously cheap price. Swiss watchmakers might lose sleep at night, Japanese automatic quality like this could put the Swiss watchmaking industry up against the ropes like Quartz did in the 70s and early 80s.
I have a question for you. I am getting the Seiko PADI tomorrow. I love that Jubilee bracelet. But I think that there's a lot going on with the watch itself and the Jubilee maybe even though it is beautiful takes away from the watch itself. With the bracelet that it comes with looks nice but doesn't keep your eyes looking at the bracelet . so you're looking at the watch more. In other words the Jubilee maybe distracts you from the watch itself where the other bracelet is more plain and emphasizes the watch. What do you think ??
Hmm, I’ve already got 3 Padi watches and I was gonna get the Padi Turtle but changed my mind and ordered the srp779 Pepsi Turtle. It was $120 cheaper. I hope I haven’t made a mistake 😬
skx in my rotation would require an electric winding box. My watches in rotation are all hand windable. Orient Bambino V4, Seiko 4r39a open heart, Vostok Amphibia, he'll even my Winner brand sub lookalike which cost me £12 is hand windable. If you want to have just one watch to wear every day, get the skx.
I wish Seiko would have kept making the SKXs, maybe updated with the 4R36 movement, instead of dropping them for the Turtle. I was going to get a 013 as they're getting scarce and the prices are starting to skyrocket, but then I stumbled upon a blue dial Citizen Promaster NY0040, which has roughly same quality, plus manual winding, for 100 Euros less... so I pulled the trigger. But If I had not found the Promaster, I'd have a SKX now.
I agree, I think it is a mistake for seiko to move from. Promaster is great, and seems like a worthy if not nicer stand in for a SKX. Looking at the indices and handset. Congrats
Both watches are beautiful. I just purchased the PADI & I love what you did with the bracelet, do you have a item no for that bracelet? as I will try & find one for my PADI. Regards, a great review, I enjoyed it.
Hey Bruce. I have a 009j and want to replace with a turtle j for the hacking movement. But I’m worried the turtle is too big. What’s your thoughts? I mean 45mm is huge but is that just die to the case and not so much the dial/bezel. Any input would help. Thanks
Bruce, I'm trying to decide on my next watch. I thought I had decided on the turtle until seeing your video. btw everyone, the PADI is just a blue turtle that says "PADI" on it, so everyone calm down. The blue is nice though for sure. After seeing your video, I think the SKX has a more balanced design. Does the SKX have the same size dial as the Turtle? Can you wind the SKX? These would be deal breakers for me and I would just get the Turtle. Thanks.
I feel ur pain. I would keep the skx009..I'm sure after the honeymoon with the padi turtle is over. you will find time for it.. had to chuckle with what you said your wife's remark was...mine said same..and I have the skx009..the orient mako Pepsi as well as the padi turtle and padi kinetic tuna..and just pre-ordered the padi marine master..so yeah the color scheme screams to me. . enjoyed the video
Keep the skx. I like the original turtles but not keen on the repro. I like the new turtle but there are too many things I'm nkt keen on. Don't like the lume markers on it, they should of made it like the original and skx. OK its got the upgraded movt but that's easy to change on the skx. I like the skx without hack and manual wind. You pick it up, shake it for a bit, wear it and wallop of you go. The skx is 42mm but feels smaller, the smooth lines are so comfy, it looks good on any strap. It's iconic and it has pepsi bezel, the modern turtle I feel is good but not good enough with too many versions and they start to look like mods. OK nodding is OK to a degree but the skx in its original state looks great. Yes I'm rambling but I love the skx009
I'd keep the SKX009 with how well it runs, and just mod it. I have a new SKX007 and a vintage SKX009 peps bezel, and my first SKX was a 173 that I later modded after I got the 009 (using Yobokies parts to make it look my my Tudor Black Bay Red). None of them run as well as your 009 except for my PADI Turtle which is +1 sec/day.
Hey Mate ive purchased The PADI myself what a sexy Bloody Watch 😍 Just curious on yours for time keeping, Mine runs at - 10 secs A Day not real Happy Bout that think im going to send it in for calibrating!!! Cheers 👍
Sorry, he did it as a favor to me. Don't want him to be receiving monetary gain by using another companies logo in a service. I'm assuming its trademarked
I was fool enough to demand that the 'official' legit PADI super jubilee bracelet to be stocked at a jewellers shop in London, such is the classy perfection of that laser engraving on yours.
Excellent review! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the Jubilee Band / bracelet with the PADI engraving ? As most of the sell with a different S/S bracelet.
