I don't know whether to be proud or just sad that I've owned 4 SKXs and flipped them all. A great watch that will be missed, but I could never fall in love with the movement and QC issues. I'm sure Seiko will release a reissue in 20 years for $6,000.
But honestly, when you talk about “building an SKX from the ground up” with all these different parts, it really isn’t an SKX. It’s a dive style watch. An SKX is stock, with few if any enhancements. Otherwise, it’s a mod watch. That’s my take.
I agree, maybe just replace the crystal to a sapphire and put a ceramic bezel insert, that keeps the original look 👀 that’s what I did with mine and will be selling it actually.
All marketing like they did with removing the original Coke. A year from know "due to overwhelming enthusiast demand" Seiko announces we are bring back the SKX007 v2 with hacking and winding, and sapphire crystal.
Say it isn't so! I love my SKX! The problem is there is really no adequate replacement for it from Seiko. Certainly not in the Seiko 5 lineup. Those aren't "real" dive watches. They are posers. Why not improve the SKX instead of discontinuing it!
What? You think people from the dive community wear the SKX to dive with? They don’t. Everybody who is up in arms over this is a watch enthusiast. I can take a Casio GW5610 out on a dive and does the same job better. There are four methods of timing your air supply on pretty much any G-Shock model. The idea of using an analoge watch to time a dive in 2019 is hilarious. People from the dive community who own SKX’s take them off to dive. The ISO thing is nonsense. The watch is over engineered and four years ago you could pick them up for 140 euros. It’s only now that people want them because they are about to stop production. The mod market is almost exclusive to the US. You can’t get the mods done in Europe at a decent price. You are more likely to see a 30 something wearing a mod version of the SKX that they purchased second hand on eBay. Seiko know this. Seiko see the mod market as access to the younger market, hence the new launch under the Seiko 5 brand. You can now purchase a brand new modified looking SKX descendant in Europe at an affordable price. And that’s what the younger market wants. Welcome to supply and demand desk boy diver.
I've heard there are only less than 200 new skx's left in the world! Better buy quickly guys! I have only 100 of the few left and all yours for only $1000 each. Be quick!! 😂🤣
this is the first watch i felt comfortable opening up to see what automatics were all about. Even a simple fix like removing dust from the dial or tightening the rotor made me feel extremely careful, all-while enjoying the process. My pepsi bezel skx175 has faded with use and sun exposure. you're correct though, yobokies and the aftermarket will keep this watch relevant. I may have to look into the crystal times cases and such.
Fantastic point Rob. I bought the turtle because I thought it was a better watch and like how it wears. More recently I have been really interested in getting SKX - to mod...so nothing to worry worry about - Thank you :)
Between residual supply, what's at retail stores, and the second-hand market, there will be plenty out there. And if all else fails, build your own. As for me, I bought that Thai SKXA65 from you. So I'm good.
Thanks for the video but nothing like the original SKX.. ISO certified.. heritage .. All is Lost Movie..a REAL Seiko that brought many of us into this hubby ..last night I rushed and bought one new Japanese version on eBay ..I just can’t live without SKX..
I just did a full build a couple of months ago and it actually hacks AND WINDS!! 😁 It was really just a matter of time. I am curious what Seiko's reason was for axing it though, after Marc's "it's not what you might think" comment.
It's still a loss for the true Seiko enthusiasts. And the new "5KX" are hot garbage fashion watches. Hardly a fitting end to the lineage of watches that started with the 62mas.
How the hell are they fashion watches? Because they are marketed towards younger people? The main difference is WR enough swimming instead of diving, no screw down crown, and a lower retail price than the SKX. Do you dive with your SKX?
I ummed and arrghed recently about getting an SKX but couldn't bring myself to pay the inflated prices being asked now. No more non-hacking movements for me. Decided instead on the new 'save the oceans' great white turtle (SRPD21K), and haven't regretted that decision since making it.
I would love a full size SKX for myself, too bad with my small wrist i can only afford to wear an skx013. Last year i built one with nh36, sapphyre and lumed ceramic bezel. But full sized SKXs have way more parts available.
Turtle is ok, though not a huge fan of the pincushion. It's really cool you can build an SKX but it's a real setback for the modding community that you soon can't get an SKX and start from there. I don't know, maybe the SKX replacement will be good enough, but lack of a screw crown is a real bummer for me.
Is that 50/50 dual time Pepsi insert the aluminum one from Namokis? Looks way glossier than I expected if so. I have been bouncing back and forth between that one and the ceramic version by DLW.
yes, no need to lose any sleep over this. there can be new skxs to be had for a long while from plenty of sources. and, u can probably build a better one for a decent price.. which would make sense as building one from genuine seiko parts without aftermarkret upgrades could cost nearly as much anyways, so why not build a better skx while you're at it? but, again, it should not be hard to source an original new skx for some time still.
The real shame is how their "replacement " offers less for more money. I'm pretty much done with Seiko. As you showed, I can get an NH35 in a much better case etc. for half what Seiko wants.
I have 4 unopened and unworn that I will hold for a few years and sell ....if I don't just wear and mod them down the road. -like you say the aftermarket parts are all there to continue the same or better. It's crazy that the 5s (which some versions look identical to skx) now cost $325.
Is there a good video that explains the differences of the Skx models? Been wanting to pick up a few of them, but I'm not familiar with them at all. Thanks in advance.
Thanks Rob. I'm getting into modding too, so I appreciated you including some of those details in this video. One day soon I'd love to build one from the ground up.
Thanks for the pep talk - it helped. I have the 777 black turtle which is indeed a better build of watch. Do I really need the 007 then? Have been looking for the yellow skx lately - rare as hen's teeth - but at least the yellow dial would be something different.
Rob, what kind of contact cement do you use for bezel inserts? And how much do you use? If you cover this in one of your mod vids then just point the way! Thanks!
AHAHAHAAA! "Oh NOooo,, The SKX Sky is Falling!" The three I have Totally Suck, an need some serious Randy Rob Treatment if I even ever bother wearing Them again.
Here ya go, compiled by a friend of mine in the Seiko Mods Facebook group. Come join us. Rob's a member. We have over 20,000 members offering tips, support and info on Seiko modding, not just the SKX. docs.google.com/document/d/1kEFrtm9CbNTfY9nTKXkrS8GZU3W8xMfgp4K4EgmKkGQ/mobilebasic
I've never seen one and it wouldn't bother me if I never do. Bone stock skx amused me. You should hold a wake guys. My Diver is the Sea-gull Ocean Star. No mods required. Its perfect just the way it is.
Rob, couldn't you just drop the insides of the new Seiko 5 into a namoki's or crystaltimes case with a screw down crown and you've got the 200m upgraded skx that everyone wanted?
Just bought a bone stock one from Mark about 2 weeks ago. I feared this would happen! Rob, I have an extra SKX007 that runs extremely fast (it's not magnatized, I demagnatized it a couple times). If Isent it to you, would you mod it and do a video?? 😀 Thanks, Rich.
Nothing crazy, maybe the NH36 (definitely need a new movement), double domed sapphire, and maybe a different bezel insert. I would be open. Totally up to you if you're up for something like this!
Teromi There are some legit mod companies, just google Seiko modder. You can also check any local watch repair people around you and they may work with you.
is it really a bad thing? these things have been around FOREVER. there are millions of them out there and will be plenty on the used market. never mind the re releases that will be coming.
@@TheMailmanOfSteel that's still within tolerance, but if you're going to keep it the service is probably long overdue, mines about 5 seconds slow a day,I only alter the time twice a month
I mean the new sk5 looks kinda dope, it’s not that big of a loss with the skx. I wonder why Marc thinks it’s been discontinued? Is it because seiko is losing money to the modding community, and that’s what the 27 models of sk5 is about ?
They’re just not that good a watch (at current prices) imho. It’s all watch community hype and Seiko mystique. It’s the one Seiko that doesn’t blow its competition out of the water for the price.
