I know people are going to complain about the price increase, but that thing looks fantastic. It looks utterly fantastic. Seiko definitely hit a home run here.
Ive had mine for about 2 weeks almost and i must say, i love it! Although im not a fan a fan of the green strap, i changed it to a brown textured leather strap from hirsch and it looks stunning!
@@jimmason8502 honestly, it's really all about personal preference. But in my opinion i think it looks great on brown leather straps. Something about the warmth color of the dial that just matches so well with a chocolate colored strap.
I was really tempted with this perticular alpinist but ended up waiting and got the spb199j1, bought it Sunday from Seikoboutique UK, came today. What a great watch, first time owning a Seiko and l can see why they have such a big following.
This is the best piece out of seiko in a while and will stay the best for a while IMO, there are newer ones coming out but that compass dial with the color is a must buy, I was looking for a 700 dollar watch and this is the one I would choose
These aren't limited editions nor are they sold out everywhere. They were just released a year ago so they're not going to be discontinued anytime soon. If you're going to get one of these dont pay more than retail and really I'd still strongly suggest that you go with the sarb017. I believe it's still a superior watch unless you love cyclops on your watches and is discontinued but still available around $450. It's a true future collectors piece.
Yeah, it confused me when he said that. How many times did people say that the original Alpinist was going away since 2005? And it never did, not until last year. These things are probably going to be floating around for years.
caomhan84 Sarb 017’s black dial and white dial “litter-mates” did disappear long time back... also, new “Alpinist” does offer AR coating and 70 hour power reserve as well. (Though that doesn’t justify $300-$400 price increase 😟)
But does it keep time? Accuracy matters, so I'd like that to be in the review. I've seen some reviews on this watch saying it loses way too much time per day, and the rotating bezel feels cheap.
Yeah, really on the fence on buying an Alpinist (which probably already communicates I shouldn't buy one) but this one stands out as the best out of the 4 colorways to me. You have a moderate shot of being able to dress it up unlike the green Alpinist. Overall I just fail to see the value in this watch for $500, much less $700. You're buying into a classic design but that's about it. Everything else is offered on even $300-$400 watches now.
Hi Bob, I'm a follower of your videos and your comments and honestly I find them very interesting. I'm saving money to buy my first entry-level automatic watch and I am hesitating a lot between this Seiko Alpinist SPB197J1 and the Hamilton Kakhi King. I want a watch for every day and I think field watches do this very well. Could you help me in the decision by giving me your opinion about it? Which of the two would you choose and why? Would you have some other more interesting proposal? Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
This is the success and the power of an individual who is rich to pay for a quality watch from (thirty-four jewels movement) the style of the watch is very unimportant but the mechanism occupies a major place in the industry. It means, buy a twenty three jewels watch, it means mr everyone at low wages from the 3rd class. and it's a shame, it's reality! Me, watchmaker and jeweler for over 77 years retired. S&W. This watch at the price it sells for, would need a movement with at least 30 jewels because of the high asking price!
It's very nice, in almost Every respect. But, I really Don't need to be reminded of the Date, to the extent presented by that cyclops. To me, "It's the fly, in the ointment".
I think this one looks so nice where I was not a fan of the old green one, just was not my taste. With that said, this one cost way too much in my opinion. Also note there are two versions of this color with simply different straps.
Venus Dee Actually one has a whiter dial with silver handset/indices, black strap with white stitching, and this one with a more champagne dial / gold indices , green strap.
