Seitona, comfortably flawed. Is it worth the hype and would I buy one?

The Seiko SSC817, Speedtimer Solar Chronograph, has been incredibly popular since launch and whilst it's attractive and a great wear - there are flaws. Should you get one? Hope this review helps answer that.
All opinions are my own, the watch is on loan from a friend and this review is unpaid.

Good review and nailed every aspect. I’ve managed to buy this new online for $625 AUD so for me, that price point was acceptable over the $1050 AUD retail.

Hey hey my man! Haha. Same here. I was having regrets not getting it from Prouds and Starbuy when i had the chance. It was sold out on that price. So i asked Watchdirect to do a price match for 625 and bought it. 😂 it is shipping to me now. 625 is justified for me compared to 1050aud.

I was able to score the white one locally. But this "unpopular" version is on the way from eBay Japan at $265 cheaper. I hope this will become a beater and Nato strap beast!

I both the Panda! I love it. Amazing size and accuracy. I love the technology behind. Solar with 6 month power reserve ... I own couple of Rolex ... i don't see this big price difference. It's a great watch absolutely worth the price! Cartier Tank ETA quartz for 3000 dollar this is overpriced!

04:40 I think it's a single domed crystal, otherwise I agree with you. I do have the black and white version but I've put it on a black strap recently and it wears even better and looks better. I've seen there's a new trophy version out in sunburst icy blue, like the daytona, and black innersections on the bracelet. That one (except for the bracelet) looks the part to me. What do you say?

Good review. I agree in that a no-date version would suit me fine since the date wheel is fairly recessed. Despite the fairly universal criticisms of the watch in reviews I still want the black and white version.

Thanks for the review, helped a lot. I am a fan of this one (and I must say I even somehow like the yellow version better), but I know I can't live with the dust or particles inside under the glass. That would put this watch out of my interest.

I bet all of them DONT have dust under the glass, and it’s a pretty easy fix, this is a beautiful Seiko I want it! EDIT- I got the white one for $475 on eBay and guess what, no dust! Go figure!

I read several user forums on the Internet about the dust-lint issue; it is not that common, maybe one in 50,000 pieces or more, I would say.

I noticed that the hand on the minute counter (where the charge indicator) does not hit the marks. I've seen this in several reviews, but they often get tagged. What does this depend on? Is this a defect? Settings, as far as I understand, cannot be fixed.

I think the answer is that these mass produced watches just don’t have the attention to close detail that we demand from micro or luxury brands. Seiko is a brilliant brand but you have to go mid or upper range before you can come in with high expectations, that’s ok I think but one could also say that they should just be better all the way down to entry level. For that kind of money, Seiko would have at least buck up on the QC a notch no? The second hand doesn't align dead center and the date is visibly off center as well.......sigh.....

Probably every device you own is made in china, it’s all about the spec/brief and from that perspective, these watches do seem to have very few problems since launch. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻

This is a hard pass for me. Unsigned crown, haphazard attempt at a bracelet, dust under the crystal. Seiko again refuses to give you your money's worth. They're hoping you'll fall in love with the pretty face and let the obnoxious personality slide.

I don't get all this fuss over signed crowns. The less branding on a watch, the better, for my money. The bracelet also goes the moment the watch arrives. Straps all the way. The dust is an issue, but I can't say it's one I've ever encountered with a Seiko.

@@wintermute8315 The unsigned crown is more a sign of cheaping out and not respecting the customer. I think Seiko just doesn't care - or they only care enough to give the minimum. Other smaller, less known companies try harder.
