Seized Brakes And A Little Spinout - 1963 Plymouth Valiant Signet Hardtop Comes Back To Life

I could spend every day reviving these A-bodies. Especially if it's going to be this easy. Today, we get a slant six powered 1963 Plymouth Valiant Signet 200 (whatever that means) running again. That's the easy part, though... the slightly more challenging part is to get it rolling again. But if we can pull that off, well, it's probably time for some testing...

Hack? The reason I watch every video is because the first time I accidentally clicked on your video and watched, I thought, "Oh my God, someone who mechanics just like me!!!". I realized I wasn't alone. And now I'm teaching my boy the ways of the "hack". The reality is we are Jedi Masters teaching young Padwans. But the Sith are always out there trying to undermine us. Keep fighting the good fight.

I bought mine from a junkyard in 1972. It was a 2 door sedan, rather than a hardtop like the one here., It had a bench seat with heavy duty upholstery, since it had been used by the local telephone company, and was army green with black on the doors to cover the Bell logo. Three on the tree, with an aftermarket emergency flasher, with a first aid kit and safety cone in the trunk. Drove it for three years and ended up selling it for the same price I paid. That base slant six sure was a great engine.

Love it. I had to watch [and sub] when this came up in my feed. I've owned the same car for many years. Paid $600 for it in 1981. It started out red, got a respray at Earl Scheib sometime in the 70s to an off white and has a three speed on the column. Red interior, bucket seats. It was well worn when I got it, perhaps twice around on the odo, maybe a year away from the JY but it's been on the road since 1963, registered and running. It got a new engine in 1988. 225. I had thought it was standard in the Signet. What a maroon. The styling summary was right on target. The 65 is my favorite but watching a 63 in action like that gave me a fresh appreciation of the one I have. The hair pin in the front fenders and the blank aluminum taillight corners always looked "off". The red lens should wrap around and fill that space like it does on the wagons. It all makes sense now seeing it in motion. Thanks.

You’re correct. The 2 sedan is the correct designation. The younger generation has trouble with sedan, hardtop and coupe designations hence the term 2 door post.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 6 месяцев назад
I’m not going to blame the misunderstanding on young people. Media outlets like Hemmings hedge their bets with “two door post sedan,” boomers on the internet refer to their tri-five Chevy as a “TWO DOOR POST,” and a thread about two door tri-fives on the HAMB (notably, a concentration of older hot rodders) is loaded with page after page of guys calling them post cars. It’s just soda vs. pop, but with cars. Isn’t language fun?
@DaveGreg100
@DaveGreg100 6 месяцев назад
@@DeadDodgeGarage That's odd. I've never started hearing the reference to "post" until the last 10-15 years or so. And I'm a "boomer". It grates. You're right to point it out. No one ever referred to anything as a "post" when I was growing up. It was never a part of the language. Nor in the decades following. This seems to be a recent thing. It's pretty simple, so I don't understand why the confusion. "Hardtop" is the exception. So there is no need to add "post". It's either a hardtop or it isn't. Clearly defined more than 70 years ago. I've seen writers twist themselves into knots trying to avoid referring to a hardtop as a hardtop, or over describe it. Others will refer to the 61-65 Lincolns as "hardtops". They aren't. Lincoln called them that. And Ford tried to get away with selling full size Fords and Mustang IIs as "Pillared Hardtops" just because they used frameless door glass and a slim B pillar. They weren't hardtops no matter what Ford claimed. There's also a tendency for people to add words to something, as if to appear more detailed, more informed , more precise or out of habit and hearing it used. "Pillarless hardtop" [redundant], "switch [swap, change] 'out" [redundant.To swap something the old item has to go 'out']. I once saw a YTer refer to his mid 60s Chevy Malibu 4 door sedan as a "crew cab" multiple times. It was even in the title. WTF? Thanks for letting me gas about cars. My friends just zone out when I go on a tangent. My older brother once told me: "Not one person in 100,000 would care about any of that". My commentary had been about modern tail light shapes. Little bro DOES get it tho. Totally enjoyed this video.

Had a '63 in the '80's. Very clean and BLACK 2 door with RED interior. Thinking it was a base Valiant or maybe a 100 because it had the 170 CUBIC INCH LEANING TOWER OF POWER W/3 ON THE TREE! The perfect cruiser and economy car as I had no need for anything extravagant at the time. Spritley, but little of power. My '73 Rallye 340 Challenger was between small to big valve heads. (another more exciting story) The VALIANT was my daily driver as Mom piloted a '77 Cordoba 400 C.U. sans the lean burn to a dual point and the prerequisate THERMOQUAD! Lover of the LA engine who knew the capabilities and shamed many a big block of any flavor😉!

The cheaper ‘64 Valiants still has the wider lines like the ‘63. I believe the ‘64 Valiants still had the lower ‘63 style trunk lid without the line, but had the horizontal tail lights, like the ‘65. The problem with a bad voltage regulator on an early Mopar is that when it overgharges and kicks the alternator on and off at full blast, the voltage spikes will kill the ECU sooner or later, usually sooner.
@DeadDodgeGarage

I have never had that lead to a toasted ECU, and I have dealt with that problem *a lot* over the years. I’ve had blown bulbs… stereos wigging out… but so far, never the ignition module problem. The good news on this one is, points! Haha.

Maybe another one will show up. Used to know where another one was over in Doty. Was a 55 270 double rocker shaft. I have no idea if it is still there...in a dragster...in a barn. Last time I saw it was like 1975. Not even sure if the same people still own the barn. Could be my brother would know, though.

Pardon the more than likely dumb question, but what's the vertical lever next to the push buttons? Also, that's a damn cool little car. I could haul it in the back of the wagon!

I have a 62 2dr hardtop Signet 200 that I'm converting from aluminum to cast iron block. Cool cars. I like them. The aluminum six didn't like the combustion pressure from the aftermarket cam and 4bble 400 cfm carter. Is that one a 170 or 225?
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 6 месяцев назад
This appears to be a 225 - but to be honest, I didn’t look that hard. The aluminum slant six didn’t like its factory combustion pressure 😅 they’re cool though. I hope to mess with one some day.

When did Chrysler first go to electric wipers? I had a 1960 Ford Falcon with vacum wipers.

My 1948 Dodge Power Wagon has electric wipers. Military trucks from that time still had vacuum. I don’t know 100% what models switched when, but they definitely had them in cars in the 50s.

Ok, great!! I think you could make a great video of working on it and it would help me out. I'm fine with the timeline, been rarely driven in the last couple yrs because of brake issues and steering issues. I drive it like 2 or 3 times a yr, very sad. I will email you, thank you!!

It didn’t make any horrible noises, just started getting grabby. And of course the rear left doesn’t spin when doing silly things. Maybe grabby because that drum is now the only one with a usable friction surface? Don’t know. Either way, the brakes need everything.

The guy’s point was that its job is only to tell you whether the battery is being charged or discharged. And it’s not that he’s totally wrong, it’s just that by interpreting the amount to which the battery is being charged or discharged, it’s really easy to figure out what’s going on with the alternator.
