HISTORY OF THE WELCOME MONUMENT
The Welcome Monument is one of the important icons in Jakarta. This monument is located in the center of the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout or known as the HI Roundabout, which is one of the most strategic locations in Jakarta. This roundabout is also the center of several main roads, such as Jalan MH Thamrin, Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Imam Bonjol, Jalan Sutan Syahrir, and Jalan Kebon Kacang. Here is the complete history:
Background:
The Welcome Monument was built as part of Indonesia's preparations to host the 4th Asian Games in 1962. President Soekarno wanted a monument that could welcome athletes and guests from other countries who came to Jakarta. The athletes and officials stayed at the Hotel Indonesia and competed at the Ikada sports complex, now known as the Gelora Bung Karno complex, Senayan.
Design and Construction:
This monument was designed by Henk Ngantung, who was then the Deputy Governor of Jakarta. And it was done by the famous artist, Edhi Sunarso, with the help of several other sculptors. The construction process began on August 17, 1961 and took about a year. Then it was inaugurated by President Soekarno in 1962. The height of this bronze statue, from the feet to the waving hand is about 7 meters and the total height is about 30 meters including the base.
Symbolism
This monument depicts a man and a woman, waving as a symbol of the friendliness and warm welcome of the Indonesian people to their guests who come. The woman in the statue also carries a flower arrangement, which symbolizes the beauty and richness of Indonesian culture. The position of the statue faces north towards the National Monument (Monas), signifying the spirit of unity and nationality.
Role and Development
The Welcome Monument became the official symbol of welcoming during the 1962 Asian Games, strengthening Jakarta's image as a friendly and modern city. This monument has been renovated several times to maintain its beauty and integrity. One of the major renovations was carried out ahead of the 2018 Asian Games. In addition to being a symbol of welcoming, the HI Roundabout and the Welcome Monument are often the center of social activities, such as car-free days, demonstrations, and public celebrations.
Influence and Legacy
The Welcome Monument is not only an iconic landmark of Jakarta, but also a silent witness to the development of this city. This monument depicts the spirit of unity, hospitality, and openness of the Indonesian people to the international world.
Conclusion
The history of the Welcome Monument reflects an important part of Indonesia's journey in showing its identity on the international stage. Built with a spirit of mutual cooperation and nationalism, this monument continues to be one of the most recognizable symbols in Jakarta, providing a warm welcome to all who come to the capital city of Indonesia.
