Yeah Ushi is treated like she is in her late teens so somewhere around the MCs age. Lust after her all ya want since she's just a svelte woman. She is also only really confused as a loli due to ingame art since any time she is shown in frame with other characters you'd realize that she is actually quite tall compared to most female Servants in the series (she's almost a head taller than Artoria, for example).

Assorted things I recall that I haven't seen mentioned (or not mentioned much) in the comments... Ushiwakamaru tends to very, very avidly yearn for praise via headpats. When Niknak calls her something like a vicious (but very loyal) attack dog, he is not underselling her behaviour. That said, she is brutal on the battlefield - IIRC her opinion of leading forces into war is something along the lines of 'my forces exist to fight and die if necessary to clear me a more effective space for me to do battle in'. Also, it's a bit of a mild running gag that Ushiwakamaru will offer to behead her Master's enemies and bring back their heads... which becomes a problem when her Master wants to farm monster body parts that are not part of the head (like demon hearts). When Niknak says that a drunk Ushiwakamaru tends to act kinda brocon-ish, it's not so much in a lustful sense, but more of elevating Yoritomo onto such a high pedestal that she speaks of him as if he can do no wrong, and is so great that he's above worldly needs... to the point that she once mistakes a statue for Yoritomo and fawns over it... until its head falls off and rolls down a hill into a latrine pit. Upon seeing that, she immediately drops the statue and concludes it must not have been Yoritomo, because her brother wouldn't have needs as base as needing to go to the toilet. As has been mentioned elsewhere, Kagekiyo is basically a collective of Taira clan members who sought to kill Yoritomo, and hold a grand grudge against the Genji as a whole. IIRC, the collective spirits that took up the name Kagekiyo witnessed Yoshitsune's end, but Yoshitsune died without openly voicing her sheer hatred for Yoritomo. Avenger Kagekiyo/Yoshitsune exists because a certain antagonist summoned them together intentionally, nurturing that unvoiced grudge to allow the merger to happen. Incidentally, because Kagekiyo is a collective of 37 assorted Taira members (any number of which could have been of either sex) along with Yoshitsune, they register as gender-indeterminate for gameplay effects, as opposed to Rider and Assassin Ushiwakamaru who distinctly register as female. As Sekhie noted, the two art shots of a bloodied Kagekiyo depict her with different-looking eyes (and the presence/absence of cosmetics). In turn, in-game the first two designs for Kagekiyo have the Taira spirits as the active consciousness, while the third ascension is when Yoshitsune is in primary control (and of course, that's when they strip down again). Her battle animations change once Yoshitsune is in control as well. On the note of Craft Essences, back in the Tamamo video, the CE "The Faithful Dog Who Waits" makes mention of "shield bearers and headhunting warriors" not matching Tamamo's devotion. The shield bearer is obviously Mash, while the headhunting warrior is referencing Ushiwakamaru. There's a running minor theme of Ushiwakamaru having a tendency to attract Servants who normally prefer men (there's an event battle where only Servants that Da Vinci finds hot can be selected. Ushiwakamaru is the only woman on that list)... and an anecdote brought up in-game that Ushiwakamaru's strategem for acquiring the Six Secret Teachings involved *seducing her teacher's daughter* and recruiting her assistance to acquire said teachings. EDIT: I rememberd something else. During an event that's upcoming for FGO NA this year, there's a small bit where you can hear Ushiwakamaru try to sing in the event menu. It's a little awkward, and she eventually stops and apologizes for not being able to sing as gracefully as Abigail Williams (who in the previous Summer event would sometimes sing the 'Black Cat Pancakes Song' in the event menu).

Loved the talk at the end about how media like fate (and others, be it western or eastern, plays/games/tv series/anime/etc) helps keep the flame of knowledgeable (or rekindle it, in some cases) about either known, somewhat known or even almost unknown figures throughout history and fiction! It was honestly very inspiring, specially as you Sekhie, are someone that actually studies history. And just like Niknak, I gained a big appreciation for the character Mandricardo (though it certainly helped that I already loved the name Richard/Ricardo).

Yeah, I'm gonna be honest I feel so much stronger about that even now compared to January. Its insane how much pop culture and media can keep history alive in the strangest or less likely ways. I've been watching period Dramas lately and let me tell you my knowledge of British history went from casual to more than some of my classmates choosing to pursue medieval history!

@manuelgardete6187
@manuelgardete6187 Год назад
I mean these hints were certainly more obvious than Tamamo or Ushi could ever hope to be hahaha. Its Leonidas the Spartan chad himslf in all his glory. As for Ushi's age I always assumed to be in her late teens. Her art has always been her problem because of the prespective and the artist's artsyle in 2014-15 and as Niknak said about the chubby early game models it didnt really help the way people outside would see her. But in her ingame data, she always had 168cm and recently with the animation update she was clearly one of the tallest women in the game (not counting quetz or medusa because those two were clearly made with height as one of their appeals so they are huge by comparisson haha). In addition to that and as proof of the artist's evolution, her costume design looks to fit more her summer version wich means if the rider's design was remade today there would be no difference between the two. This just adds to my need of a redrawing on various servants in the game. Tamamo looks nothing like Koyanskaya for example (same artist but year 1 servant vs year 6 servant). I want to clarify, redraw is not redesign, i wouldn't want that. Well i've been rambling. Ushi is cool, Hitachibou is a big nerd and fanboy but with a big heart and Taira is a really sick concept for a servant, would like to see other vessels for him asside from Yoshitsune. See you guys in the next video! (Question: Would you prefer to meet the servants in babylonia first or with a Niknak presentation? Because there are still some left.)

I have to disagree on the need for a Tamamo redraw because she is constantly redrawn all the time she was designed by Wada Arco after Takeuchi's initial pitch. I would say by the time of the CCC CGs and if not definitively by the time of the first Extella game Tamamo's art had evolved to her current state. Wada Arco drew Tamamo for many other occasions including an art exhibition in 2022 (Ai -Arco Wada Fate ART WORKS) and she still makes Tamamo look distinctively like Tamamo - there is a reason she does not look that much like Koyanskaya (if you know the story beats of JP, otherwise wait for the end of this year in NA ...).
@manuelgardete6187
@manuelgardete6187 Год назад
@@jkosch what I'm saying is that she is different from the current wada artstyle. I used koyanskaya as an example because she is the closest thing to an tamamo in fgo 2021. If you want a better example of tamamos closer to her current artstyle , the more recent ones are extella and extra record. And if you want a wada example, nero's costumes and summer version look very different from her base form. That's all I said

Pretty sure Benkei still is sorta summonable, but it's probably harder to do so compared to summoning Kaison-as-Benkei. Might be a case of Kaison always being Lancer and Benkei being in another class, or it could be more complicated than that. I should also note that Ushi treated Kaison VERY roughly during their earlier interactions in FGO (though they greatly make up later on) precisely because she considered him taking Benkei's name for himself as a Servant an even greater insult than running away before her death and would often order him to present his nape to her so she can cut his head off. Some of the fans theorize that Yoshitsune and Benkei might have become an item later on in their lives, though Shizuka IS explicitly mentioned to be with them during their last stand so it's unknown exactly what all their relationship was. For all we know they had a damn polycule with each other.
@jkosch
@jkosch Год назад
Fun fact: a month ago I was at the Samurai Museum in Berlin and there they had an early Edo Period folding screen with scenes from the Heike Monogatari - Benkei was very easy to spot in them because in all places he appeared in he had his full weapon collection with him like it is depicted in FGO. More general comments: 1. I like that format of shared reactions for closely associated Servants. IMO you could have included Kiichi Hogen in this video as well, since there is not quite that much to them in FGO and Sekiie seemed quite prepared to tackle Kiichi Hogen. 2. I am sooo looking forward to the (probably long-ass) updates video!

the reason why a lot of servants that are in the raider class but doesnt have a mount is because the requirement for the class are that the have a mount( can be animal or a machine ) or that they are militar liders like ushi, sima yi, tai wong and constantine; and one of the perks of the class is to have a lot more of noble phantasmas that most classes in most cases

1:03:40 Up to this moment, I was preparing to ask if Sekhie was later shown Ushi's Melty Blood inclusion. By the way, it doesn't seem like you acknowledged or remembered it, but her MB design derives from the Craft Essence at 1:16:19. The way I understood Taira no Kagekiyo, it's less of a vengeful spirit going around possessing people, and more of an alias shared by a line of would-be assassins of Yoritomo, which got recorded into Throne of Heroes as a general notion of vengeance against Genji clan. Any Heroic Spirit, who has a reason to hold a strong deep-seated grudge against Genji, can be summoned as Taira no Kagekiyo (kind of like how there are multiple people who can be summoned as Hassan-i Sabbah and Robin Hood). FGO's Kagekiyo says that Tomoe Gozen seems to be another suitable candidate. Next one is Leonidas.
@lenleon3699
@lenleon3699 Год назад
Incorrect, Kagekiyo himself is a wraith born from the legend that many individuals claiming to be “Kagekiyo” attempted to eliminate Yoritomo. While the idea that he was a wraith is born of the many “him” existing, there are not a selection of heroic spirits you can summon. Though I guess in the end it still means that there can be many versions so I am merely arguing semantics.
@ssj5gogeta1310
@ssj5gogeta1310 Год назад
@@lenleon3699 Could we argue semantics further? I want to understand. When you say that Kagekiyo is a "wraith born from the legend", do you mean that such legends formed this wraith back in 12th century Japan, or is it a case of "spooky thing existing only in stories became recorded in the Throne of Heroes"? Also, you used "wraith", but I am used to Nasuverse wraiths being ghosts of people that linger in the world of the living after dying. Kagekiyo's profile doesn't even use the word for wraith (亡霊) or ghost (幽霊). It is referred to as onryō (幽霊) - a vengeful spirit... which would probably count as a sub-type of those, but still. I guess, I'm so insistent on Fate's Kagekiyo being a "role" that Heroic Spirits with certain criteria can play rather an entity that possesses people because Heian-Kyo chapter's portrayal of "Ushiwakamaru summoned as Taira-no-Kagekiyo" did not give me the impression that there is any identity or memories to the Kagekiyo part, just hatred for Genji.
@lenleon3699
@lenleon3699 Год назад
@@ssj5gogeta1310 Fairly certain the way they word it in materials implies that the Kagekiyo that was summoned in FGO is born from the stories of Kagekiyo. In fact the way he works is precisely like a wraith, as it is a form of lingering hatred that latches to any being with hatred toward a member of the Genji clan. Thing is that Kagekiyo would be merely a role if it was not made clear that Yoshitsune’s memories are being subsumed by another entity and the third Ascension is even confirmed to be Yoshitsune in control with most of her hatred held in check. Basically, if the servant literally has two different minds fighting for power then it can NOT be a mere role. That is just plain body possession.
@ssj5gogeta1310
@ssj5gogeta1310 Год назад
@@lenleon3699 Which Materials are you talking about? I couldn't find scans, but the latest one, F/GO material XI apparently doesn't reach Heian-Kyo Servants (at least from what I found). I apologize for being pedantic, but I am still confused. Is what you describe as a wraith called a "wraith" in Nasuverse? I tend to default to "Sasaki Kojirou" when that term comes up, and he seems pretty chill. Maybe "grudges" (怨念) that Rin and Archer briefly discuss in F/SN prologue, day 2, are a closer concept?
@lenleon3699
@lenleon3699 Год назад
@@ssj5gogeta1310 Wraiths are just lower ranked Spirits, or any spirit that becomes earthbound or does not quite reaches the level of a Ghost Liner. Heck, even proper Heroic Spirits devolve into wraiths if the mage lacks a proper vessel for it’s power or a well prepared Holy Grail (as seen in the latest Light Novel of Sakurai). If you want an actually well explained idea of wraiths you need to read Kara no Kyoukai as demons and spirits are the whole deal of those novels.

Ushi isn't classified as a Child Servant, a trait created for an event, so there's that. Considering that F/GO is originally a Japanese game Ushiwakamaru might be 16. Coz you know, legal standards are different over there.
@t.h.e.animeclub
@t.h.e.animeclub Год назад
Thats good reasoning. But it’s still rather ambiguous actually. Child Servants are a relatively new category that is wildly inconsistent and to my knowledge is only applied to a skill on Summer Illya if memory serves. The standard seems to be whoever Illya views as childish. This is why you get weird inclusions like Asterios or exclusions like Shuten. Showing it’s not really a matter of physical or mental maturity that gets the category. And 16 wouldn’t surprise me but it’s hard to say since we have definitely younger characters like Jack or Abi in skimpy outfits as well. Just some things to keep in mind.
@ShinigamiSamaH
@ShinigamiSamaH Год назад
@@t.h.e.animeclub For the physical part, yes. But I do think the trait apply to any Servant with a childish mentality in the eyes of Illya. And Asterios is listed as such because despite the massive body mass, he is mentally very immature and innocent, being kept isolated in the labyrinth since birth essentially. While Shuten, being *very* mature in her mannerisms obviously do not show any childlike behavior.
@numberhunter62
@numberhunter62 Год назад
@@t.h.e.animeclub Yeah, definitely have children that are skimpy. But Ushi is definitely portrayed and played of as older, much more in line with the MC in terms of age. Which probably means somewhere between 15 and 18. Asterios even in mythology was referred to as a boy by Theseus. Theseus went in during the 3rd sacrificial group, so Asterios could very well be younger than 5. There'd be no way in hell one would mistake Shuten as a child once you get anywhere past physical appearance.

Especifically, it was not the artist who wanted to redraw her as lewd. It was the developers of early FGO who saw the game as just short-lived endeavor that needed to appeal to the horny players. This is why the character artist has, consistently, designed every single iteration of Ushi afterwards in more fitting clothing. As for the Melty version, she is a newly summoned Ushi in that universe, but with memories of Chaldea. It confused sone people because she has memories of FGO events BUT she is not the FGO servant. On Chaldea side, they believed Taira to be a single immortal warrior who came back again and again to get revenge on the Genjis, but Taira's internal monologue clarified that each time a Taira-no-Kagekiyo fall in battle, another person would pick up where he left off and continue using that name.

USHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII- *This users brain has fried. Will return when video is over.* I HAVE RETURNED!!!!! Sorry, Ushi is one of my favorite servants in basically ALL of Fate (not really an uncommon opinion I find, especially in Japan, the entire reason she was added to Melty Blood was because she was the most wanted character besides Neko Arc over there.) She's just so cute and loyal and feral and I LOVE HER SHE DESERVES ALL THE HEADPATS IN THE WORLD AND I WILL PERSONALLY TORTURE YORITOMO IF HE EVER APPEARS IN THE GAME PROPER And yes, her Rider design is unfortunately a result of Nasu defying his inability to say no at the WORST POSSIBLE TIME. The reason for her being so uncovered is because the artist originally made a more covered version, more akin to her Avenger design, AND NASU REFUSED THE DESIGN AND TOLD HIM TO LEWD HER UP. As a result, the artist threw together her Rider design out of pure spite, expecting it to get rejected. AND IT WAS ACCEPTED. As a result, her "lewd loli" design isn't even compliant to her in game and lore info, as she's supposed to be taller than most other females (only 5.6, but that's tall by Japanese standards apparently, and all 3 Ushi's are meant to be "around" the same age physically, just her Avenger form having the most years on her due to being from the end of her life.) Her swimsuit version even further solidifies this as she's meant to take on a "younger mindset from her training days" so there has to be at least a few years in-between her Tengu training and serving her brother. (She's also supposed to have very defined abs, more than Medb as Medb specifically points this out as they were "rivals" that summer.) From what I remember, in-lore, Taira Ushi was always a possible Avenger summon because of her feelings during her final days, we just never got her until her in-game release. Fun facts! Her Melty Blood Design comes from her 6th Anniversary Artwork! You just barely skimmed over it here, so I'm guessing that's why you didn't comment on her having a shirt there. XD Also, Ushi CAN be summoned as a Saber, this version going by Minamoto No Yoshitsune, and is actually the the class she's summoned as in Fate/Requiem, her design is more akin to 1st/2nd Ascension Taira with Rider Ushi's regular color scheme. Finally, Rider Ushi herself is a Rider PURELY because of what she did during Dan-no-ura. She has a horse, yes, but she doesn't even have access to it as a Rider. The horse itself only ever appears in that shot shown, which comes from the FGO trailer/intro.
@eonnexus
@eonnexus Год назад
So, another thing I found out after playing the Tengu event, and I thought I'd put it here since I was listening to this again idly while cleaning lol (the reason I'm not just editing my original comment is because of length. XD) Taira's sword is actually DIRECTLY connected to her Mask(s) and why she cuts it to use her NP. So as it turns out, the sword was known to be cursed! We don't know what happened to the first user exactly, but the second owner had his eyes shot out by arrows in battle, and the third user became progressively more blind while he had the sword, only to be completely cured after giving it to a temple. As such, the sword is known to cause a "curse of blindness" hence the mask. When she merges the sword back into one, she cuts away the mask, cutting away her "blindness" in the process, allowing her to use the sword to its fullest potential. And I now wish Taira was one of the servants that got Glasses during the glasses event! XD
