John the leatherman raptor trauma shears dont advertise it as a wire cutter but as a ring cutter, it also has a carbide glass breaker and the rectangular slot is an oxygen wrench key for opening oxygen tanks.
I love Leatherman tools. I've never seen the shears before. My grandson gave a new Leatherman multi tool for my birthday last year, and I wear it every day and use it multiple times a day.
Words I never thought I'd hear Scoutcrafter say "I don't have any wire rope". Great episode John, I have many tools that are in the "probably never get used" category.
This is another great video. We used to use those cable cutters underground to replace cables. Now, we use cables from spools to replace slusher cables.
For decades I collected knives. I always used to keep all the boxes and paperwork, never sharpen them, take them out every few months to run a ballistol rag over. When I wanted to cut something I would grab my el-cheapo EDC. Then I realised when it is time for my dirt-nap, nobody will actually value them. So now I actually use and enjoy them. But yes there are many things I bought that I have not got around to actually using. Yet! Now I have one more on the way in the mail. I didn't know I needed a set of Leatherman Raptor shears until I watched your video. LOL.
Love that cutter. As soon as you cut the first wire and said let's try something bigger, I had to let out a chuckle. We're just like kids wanting to try it something else to test it's limits. Then you showed the Dake and got me laughing over here. Full on kid-mode! Great episode!
The Leatherman Raptor is a go to tool on "Ocean Conservation Nambia". A group that rescues seals from marine entanglements. They run down seals that are wrapped in gill nets, fishing line, plastic wrap, etc., net them and then they use the hook feature when possible, and the scissors when the entanglement is to tough for the hook. It's an interesting RU-vid channel, and shows off what a great rescue tool the Raptor is. I've wanted one since I saw it in action, but realistically would probably never use them.
I never seen a cable cutter before but the restoration looks great. I like the Leatherman scissors but I agree I would probably never use them. Thanks for sharing this.
Hi John. You know when I was a wee lad. Before we had power tools. His dad had one of those cable cutters. You know kids. We just had to use it for all sorts of things 😮. We were bad boys. Not really 😂. Great video again. Great job on that cutter. Looks like new. I also have some tools that I probably will never use. Just love them..lol.👍👍❤..
I worked on Drilling Rigs for 46 years. That cutter is a necessity in that line of work. Very seldom do you see one in as good of shape as the one you purchased. Never used that small of sized one though. Good job on your restoration. I have never seen any sheers like the ones you presented! Love this channel.
Worked in the er for years and used my raptors every day. Love them. Still keep them handy for when I do first responder stuff with my volunteer fire dept
Awesome video Scout, I’m glad I’m not the only one that buys tools just because I like them even though I don’t really need them and will probably never use them. It’s one of my guilty pleasures in life. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺
John that cable cutter was common to see in Hardware stores. Really cool tool! Those Leatherman EMT shears are the Cat's Pajamas. We use them in the Fire service and they are much better than the standard ones you get. I think it also has a slot for O2 tanks. Expensive but worth it. Great video!
Fabulous episode, John. I think the one tool that I have which will likely never see service is a pair of sheep shears-those all metal ones that you see in Australia. That cable cutter is one terrifying piece of gear. Yikes! And the Raptor: I simply must have one. I love my Leatherman Surge, especially the reactions I get when I take it out of my nice leather purse to slice open a package with the knife or loosen a screw with the screwdriver. Thanks so much for all you do.
I worked at a coal fired power plant in Cincinnati Ohio for 31+ years and we had one of the cable cutters in our tool room, and in those years never I never saw it used. 😂 The plant was first built in 1925 so who knows how long it had been there. We had a lot of old tools like that, that were no longer used, especially electrical testing equipment. You would have been in heaven. Never seen the Leatherman scissors before, but I like it. I carry the Skeletool on a daily basis. I have to agree with you on the quality of there tools.
Diamond four by six double headed adjustable wrench. Found it when I was 10 years old and thought I had just found a treasure! I used it to work on my bike but have not used it since.
Hi John, Very nice video. I’ve never heard of a cable cutter. Very cool tool. I have a knife that I’ll never use that has a little bit of a story. My birthday is 9/11/55. I found a comando knife with special 9/11 graphics on it. I had to have it. I’ll some day make a shadow box for it and put it in my office. It’s the coolest knife I’ve ever seen. So I know what you mean about just having to have it. Great refurb. Best Regards, John
I have just sharpened two on my chisels. I'm now realizing why again I have so many blunt chisels😂My shed is full of tools I'll probably never use. Hope you'll have a great weekend!
Some tools, you only need to use them once for them to pay for themselves. We had the cable cutters in the Army. Never had to use them. Nice video. Good Luck, Rick
Never saw the snips before but if you've ever fooled with cranes, winches or rigging you might've been blessed to use cutters like that to cut cable. I've had the privelige to use one of them maybe 2ice. The rest of the time is a dull axe or just a sharp place in a track pad with a hammer and beat it in two. Getting the gas powered stuff ready to go for the grass season. You'll be upstate before long mowing I bet. Happy weekend, Pal and God Bless Yall!
Fantastic job on the cutter. I had a tool that I thought I would never use: a Browne and Sharp trammel set, which has a 20" beam and a 20" extension bar. Got it for £5, I wanted a smaller one, but at that price could not resist restoring it. Anyway, I just made a router circle cutting jig (the type that avoids cable tangle) and had the idea of using the trammel set, for larger circles giving it a capacity far bigger than I'll ever need. So from being a tool that I thought I would never use it is now a tool that will be used fairly regularly. Also, I have an automatic planishing hammer that was out for scrap. It was a fun restoration project, but may never get used.
When I worked for Int. Paper in eastern NC in the 1970’s if you had to use that cable cutter you were in a bad place. Our fire wardens had one in each of the Caterpillar tractors along with an axe and sledge. Often they would get bogged down and it was our job to drag out the cable from the winch and find a tree stout enough to hold the pressure those winches would exert. Sometimes the cable would snap and the operator wouldn’t fool with resetting the hook, they’d have us hold the cable with the cutter between as we steadied it on a log. You will cut no cable when the ground is as soft as a sponge, so placing it on the tree they just pulled over was convenient. They would separate the cable strands and roll an eye by overlapping the ends and create a loop. Then find another tree and hopefully off we go; great times working in mud up to your knees.
That Leatherman raptor tool is designed for EMTs they're really good. The square cut out on the hook sheer is designed to fit the valve on an oxygen tank also. I've never had one but I have some EMT friends that swear by them.
Great video 👍 That Morse-Starrett impact wire rope cutter you got turned out Fantastic! That is a cool tool 👍👍, I like how you polished the handle, the sides & base and left the original color on the body .Fantastic restoration!👍👍You really went over the top with that one!, Awesome job! I like seeing the demonstration of the cutter in action also , that blade cut trough that wire like butter 🧈🤣😂👍. I wanted to say Wednesdays video of those 4 Coe’s Brothers wooden handle adjustable wrenches 🔧 turned out Fantastic, you cleaned & restored them up beautifully. To me they look like N.O.S. Again that was awesome job you’ve done on them.👍👍 Those Leatherman raptor shears are awesome! I like how it folds up ,compact and comes with a nice case. I must say Leatherman does make great multi tools & knives, I have two of them and they work Fantastic! I think it is a great idea to carry one with you or have one in your toolbox 🧰 or vehicle for emergencies or what not or out in the field when you might need a screwdriver or wire cutter etc.Another Great shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the Breeze. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Monday! Have a great weekend 😄👍👍
Almost every tool I buy at the flea market I do not need or know how to use. We understand each other. Great video. Gotta run to the flea market right now.
Your restoration on the cutter is exceptional,I love the contrast too. I have a lot of hand tools I have collected that will get little to no use. All of my machinery I have I’ve used. I have a cabinet full of the old metal drills, saws, sanders and grinders to restore. How many can a guy use? Great show , thank You.
Look in your box of punches, that you all have, Ha Hah. The cable cutter is something I want now! However, you showed how expensive they are, so I won't even look. it would make a nice doorstop. when they ask what it is you could tell them it's my wire cutter doorstop. Eagle
Great job on the cutter, John. I always wanted one of the 12 gauge powered cable cutters that were fitted to aircraft wing leading edges in WWII, to cut through barrage balloon tether cables. Very hard to come by.
Interesting cutter…closest tool to that is a rebar cutter we used on the job…just snapped those rods like they were made of plastic…another great video…🖖
😊 I got a whole shop full😅 seems I only use the same tools on every project... I bet you played with that cutter longer than it stayed in evaporust... it looks addictive! Love how you finished it! Have a great weekend Mr. John
Yes pricy but I think once you hold one you realize where the money went. Nothing worse than paying good money for junk but these feel really high quality. 😃👍
Sadly, as time goes by, I feel it is increasingly unlikely that I'll use a number of tools I have purchased (or inherited) over the years ! I need to retire soon and live to at least mid eighties I reckon to have a chance - I bought a job lot of Scotch Augers for a great price on E-bay despite only really needing one and also a big collection of old carving chisels - not cheap but good value. They are both a worry (in my absence) because they look like nothing but well worth preserving and more importantly using ! It's funny to hear you talk about seeing a tool and having to have it - this is the effect you have on many of your subscribers, I guess we're all prone to this emotion ! There aren't many modern tools or devices that elicit this feeling, but some old tools just grab you and won't let go, it's not about value, it's just a feeling that it hard to define ! When Armando did the Eclipse 4S 4 years ago, I just had to hunt one down !
I found a pair of those scissors on the island where a traffic signal post stands. I'm guessing a paramedic dropped them when using it after a traffic accident in the intersection. I never really knew what they were until now.
I’m at the point where I at least acknowledge that I should be sending some of my tools on to where they will be used. Can’t say that I have anything that I will never use. It has been a very long time since I have used my timing gun, and I don’t thing I ever really used the dwell meter. P.s. I didn’t get to Wednesday’s video until today so I will add that you saw me wearing my favorite hat at the Fall Festival in Kent last year.
I always say you never know when you might need it till you need it great video scout love the cutter came out fantastic god bless take care 🐍🗽🗽🦅🇺🇸🇳🇿47/FJB
That turned out nice. Now you can cut your handcuffs after you escape. You know I would have tried that lazer on rusted tools. They clean rust as well as paint but not rough like a sandblaster. If it can do a tatoo, it could probably handle rust.
Nice work on the cable cutter S.C....I picked one up a few weeks ago on marketplace, came with a tool lot. It doesn't have a makers mark on it, very old, but in excellent condition. Great show!👍
That Billionaire Lady that drowned in her Tesla in her own pond could have used that seat belt cutter the other day. BTW if you have seat belt cutter in your console tether it with a string because you may be upside down when you need it and it'll just fall out of reach when you open the console.
I didn’t know they made a special tool like that for wire rope. We always used a torch for the thick stuff. I think some of those really large 2” and larger wrenches and my 3/4 drive socket and ratchets are tools I will never use.
Leatherman Raptors are primarily used by medics etc., for cuttging clothes off of people in traffic accidents etc. I've always wanyyted one but like you say, they're expensive. Over £100 here. When I was doing first aiding for my children's rugby teams I considered buying one but thought it was too much for something I'll probably never use. So never bought one. But... like you, I've quite a few tools that I'll never use. So I'd imagine at some point I'll have a moment of madness and buy one.
A lazer hair /tattoo remover! What did that cost? I have never seen those two tools. The cable cutter is very cool. Yes, I am guilty of getting things I like but will never use! It is a problem. Have a great weekend.
I was part of a Cav squad attached to a LRS (Long Range Surveillance) Company and those guys always seemed to get the B.T.I. "better than issued" gear and I ended up with some pretty cool stuff out of that deployment, nifty flashlights and the like..but I ended up with a pair of those exact shears and I still have em to this day...I'll probably never use em either, but man are they high speed lol!
