one factor that might've been overlooked is how well each bow plays in softer dynamics. it seems like all the bows were tested while playing at a forte dynamic.

I was waiting for someone to say this... I do believe this Violinist is a soloist that plays in front of an orchestra.

Very interesting and well put together video, excellent sound quality too. One thing that was not mentioned, is the quality of hair used on each bow. When a bow is rehaired can this affect both the balance of the bow and sound quality? Also would like to know more about the wood that is used, as now I believe the export of pernambuco has been banned, are carbon fibre bows the future
@alwt1991
@alwt1991 3 года назад
it will always be pernambuco for advanced bows, and I assume the bows were all haired by experienced luthier?

My original first time bow ( one that I bought apart from a cheap rental one) weighed 9 grams! So unmanageable that I had trade one in for a lighter one. And yes I was in the shop for a awhile to try a bunch of them until I had one that was comfortable for me to hold and sound off well with my instrument! ( cello)

Umm... 9 grams is sooo light. Violin bows are about 60g and cello bows are about 80g. Congrats on finding a bow you like!

Were any of the 30 bows carbon-fiber bows? Do they talk about carbon fiber bows at all? If not, they missed an opportunity. I would have liked to hear the guy's opinion on the topic.

Honestly, the sound difference is too minute to notice. If anything, I'd choose a comfortable bow rather than a good sounding one, as any audience member won't think twice about the sound quality for a decent bow.
@rofo2107
@rofo2107 5 лет назад
LOL. VIolin itself make 50% of sound quality. Strings 15% Bow 15%. Bridge, Soundpost, Tailpiece and all other things called "setup" 20%. So there's no way to underestimate bow and all other things or you can end up with $100.000 violin with the sound of $1000 violin.

There is no such a thing as complete uniformity from a bowmaker, a maker's name may only be a guide.

All this work creating the video (watched the entire thing!) and NOT TELLING us the make and model of the 3 final bows selected??? The reason I was watching the video was to find out WHICH bow to buy! I was NOT watching to listen to great violin playing or comment on the video quality....I am searching for reviews on violin bows... which I though this video would help me with. Very disappointed.

Hello Eva! Our intention with this video, rather than to review different types of bows, was to give players an idea of what to look for when choosing a bow and how to put a bow through its paces to see if it will work for you. If you are looking for specific advice about which violin bows could work for you, our sales staff are more than happy to help. They can be reached at info@carriagehouseviolins.com or 617-262-0051.

And you should really learn how to read titles well and what they imply. It clearly means an advice on selecting bows
@goodcyrus

The video mentioned nothing but balance which everyone knows about and different bowing which I'd think is obvious. No discussion of hair types, shapes, types of wood etc.
@richard76rama

The bow varies from one musician to another. Eric also prefers a darker tone, which may differ to other player.
@elliejay4970

@@goodcyrus But that information is kind of irrelevant. What matters is how it feels with your type of playing, and in your hand.

You SHOULD share the results -- its not so much that we need to copy him.. we absolutely don't. But as a matter of "the Mystery Factor" -- its incredibly important for human beings to have a "closure"/a conclusion. Furthermore, you should have allowed us to hear all 30 bows and just let us decide with our own ears. It would be a long video, but it would be quite interesting. Let the player be "blind" to the brand, but show us the brand on the screen.
